a message from the chairmanI consider it a singular honour and privilege to serve Fairholme College as the Chairman of the Board of Directors. My role allows me to have input into many areas of the College life. It also means I’m on campus quite regularly and so I see and hear what’s happening around the College.

I am constantly amazed by the character, persistence, intelligence and grace of our students, the excellence and commitment of all our staff, the strong and vibrant Senior Leadership Team under the inspirational leadership of our Principal, the teaching and educational outcomes achieved each year, and the firm but caring governance displayed by the Board of Directors.

It is a privilege to serve, and in serving, there are, of course, many challenges along the way.

Privileges and Challenges – my view, briefly shared.

I am afforded a few privileges. For instance, I’m invited to all the important events of the year, such as the Junior School Musical, the Kindergarten to Year 3 Christmas Musical, the Year 6 Graduation Service, the Year 9 Graduation Service, the Year 12 Final Assembly and Presenting Fairholme, the list goes on and on.

And then there are those I consider to be the privileges that are particularly important to me.

Some of you would know that students who receive prizes each year at Presentation Morning or Presenting Fairholme are asked to write a thank you note to the giver of the prize. Many of those thank-you notes are written to me as Chairman because the Board of Directors provides the prize.

I consider it an absolute privilege to receive these notes, whether they are from Junior School children in their own handwriting or more formal notes from older students. It’s a real highlight for me to read each and every one of them. Collectively, they express the very values we’ve identified in our Strategic Plan, especially the values of Enjoyment, Seeking Excellence and Respect.

I remember a particular card I received in my first year as Chairman – a special little card with just a few words from a young lady in the Junior School, who then went on to complete Year 12 last year and who spoke beautifully at the Year 12 Final Assembly. It’s a simple privilege, I know, but it is a privilege to see our girls learn and grow and become the confident young women they are when they leave us.

On an entirely different note – there are many challenges currently facing the Independent School sector in this country. The most important is the significant uncertainty about future government funding, be that state or federal.

You might not be aware that the State Government advised Independent Schools in late October last year of a reduction in funding for 2013. In Fairholme’s case, this was like 18 students simply not turning up for the first day of school in 2013. As you can imagine, this was a major impost and challenge at a time when our Budget deliberations were almost complete. While the College has absorbed that reduction, with immense difficulty, it will not be possible to do so again.

In addition, we are waiting for the implementation of the recommendations from the Gonski Review. The current Federal Government has has committed to commencing implementation in 2014, with full implementation from 2020. The government has promised that no school will be worse off when the new arrangements are put in place. However, the funding model has not been determined, there is no commitment to increasing funding to meet inflation, let alone any other potential needs, and of course there is an election to be held between between now and then.

All of this means that the College will need to be prudent in its financial management in the coming years to guard against possible negative funding models.

In the best interests of your children and Independent Schools across the country, you should consider approaching your local Members of Parliament about these matters.

This ‘adolescent phase of development brings about particular demands, problems and crises related to age. It is a time when young adolescents are experiencing rapid social, emotional and cognitive changes, developing physically, and are highly peer-oriented’ (Pendergast, Keogh, Garrick & Reynolds, 2009, p. 23).

In just two years’ time Queensland will undergo its own ‘education revolution’, in a sense, when Year 7 becomes a mandatory part of secondary school. It is, nonetheless, not a revolution for Fairholme. Fairholme’s specific attention towards catering for this very special group of students was first investigated in 2006, when a group of keen secondary teachers spent 12 months discussing, planning and developing a middle school curriculum for Year 7 through to Year 9. These teachers were given some dedicated time within their timetable to meet as a group and plan, collaboratively. In 2007 Fairholme’s first Head of Middle School was appointed and in May of 2008 the actual Middle School building was opened for business.

In essence, Fairholme’s Middle School was born of curriculum planning, developed through teachers with a passion and heart for those students aged between 11 and 15. It focused on the specific needs of a group that experiences a more rapid phase of development than at any other point in life, except infancy. ‘Adolescent development is neither singular nor simple, and aspects of growth during adolescence are seldom in step with each other, neither within individuals nor among peers’ (Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development 1989). Research would indicate that Year 7 is better placed within a middle school where the structure is designed specifically for the learning needs of this age group and is not merely a beefed up primary school, nor a watered down secondary model.

Our current Head of Teaching and Learning, Mr Stewart Peacock, was one of the teachers involved in the project that grew the Middle school curriculum, as were current teachers Mrs Karen Cottle (Enrichment Co-ordinator), Miss Mary Timmer, Mr Chau Chuc, Miss Alison Scott, Mr Anthony Beauchamp, and Mrs Clare Greenhill. The Middle School continues to be staffed by teachers with pedagogical expertise in students of this age, but also with many who are experienced in teaching our senior girls. >

> Moving up the MIDDLE

Teaching How fortunate for example, that a Year 12 Maths teacher might also be teaching Year 7 girls and have a full picture of the development of curriculum and the scaffolding of skills and concepts over that six-year period.

Importantly, middle school is about the nurturing, growing and challenging of girls aged between 11 and 15 – girls who are experiencing significant physical and social change. Camps, Life Skills curriculum and Life Skills days, talent quests and service activities are some of the extras incorporated within the curriculum to engage these students and nurture them at a

time when identity is at its greatest point of challenge. Barber (1999) stresses the importance of meaningful activity that is challenging and relevant:

The Middle Years of Schooling should be so busy, so demanding, so active, so adventurous, so spectacular that young adolescents should barely have time for brooding introspection or watching Australian soap operas (Barber, 1999)… or becoming obsessed with mobile phones, iPods, iPads, and the ubiquitous world of social media.

The middle matters at Fairholme, as do our Year 7 girls who are ready for a unique learning journey, at a unique point in their social, emotional and learning development. When the educational revolution of 2015 strikes many Queensland schools, we look forward to strengthening our middle further – evolutionary, rather than revolutionary.

help form the citizens of the future.

The past, the present, and the future has been, is, and will be shaped by

the quality of educational activity. I am delighted to say that our staff continually

rise and adapt to meet this challenge, and gladly accept the remarkable

responsibility of nurturing a future generation. As teachers, our focus in 2013 will be on ‘best practice’ in the

classroom.

score on day 2 of the USQ regional Science and

Engineering Challenge on Tuesday 21st May, 2013

have the highest total overall score on their

nominated day of the competiton, a number of

girls also formed the highest scoring groups in

many events. The girls’ total score for the day

was only bettered on the last day of the 5 days of

competition.

Professional learning is an integral part of the life of a Fairholme

teacher, and a significant part of our learning in the last 12 months has

been devoted to the analysis of educational data, in seminars facilitated

by Dr Judy Smeed (QUT). The outcomes of such learning not only

benefit the pedagogy of our staff but also have a direct impact on the

planning and delivery of lessons in the classroom.

Furthermore, Dr Lindsay Williams worked collaboratively with all

members of academic staff, building their capacity to improve the

English and the curriculum literacy outcomes of our students in all

subject areas.

Zoe Cornwell, Alex O’Hare and Katie Richards (Year 11) gained entry into the University of Queensland’s 2012 – 2013 Young Scholars Program

Introduction of ‘HotMaths’ – students use this website to complete tasks set by the teacher, to select revision tasks themselves, to view the

online lessons when needing further explanation and to compete in timed quizzes (similar to Mathletics).

As a part of our ongoing support of students considering Tertiary study pathways, all Year 11 and 12 students travelled to either Brisbane or the Gold

Coast on our annual Tertiary Roadtrip. The day included tours of the Queensland University of Technology (Kelvin Grove), Southbank TAFE and

the University of Queensland (St Lucia) or, for those travelling to the Gold Coast, Gold Coast TAFE, followed by a tour of Griffith University and finish-

ing with a tour of the Bond University.

Learning the Leading

The 2012 Year 11 Retreat, held in July, marked an important moment in the leadership journey for the 2013 Senior Leaders. The three days of reflection, challenge and formation of a collective leadership direction certainly became a highlight of 2012, and set the scene for a fabulous year ahead with our newest leaders.

Still staged in three phases, the leadership program’s steps of COMMISUM [to understand and undertake what is entrusted] and CREO VISIO [to create a vision] have brought the girls to the final stage, which remains in place now – ADAUGEO [to make greater, to increase].

The girls began their leadership work in Term IV, in an area of College life which is to be their primary focus in 2013. Forming the following Leadership Committees early in this final term, the girls clearly set in place the focus, vision and open minds that will surely bring about a year of distinction in leadership at Fairholme.

5Seniors hosted another successful ‘Fairholme Day’ on Friday 1 February, 2013 for all year 7 and 8 girls. The program involved the learning war cries, house history, distribution of delicious cupcakes, shared stories from Senior Leaders, and of course a thundering rendition of the ‘Jump-n-Jive’.

On Friday 14 June, Toowoomba senior citizens learnt more about the latest technology as part of Telstra’s Everyone Connected Program. Facilitated by TV Gadget Guy, Peter Blasina, a free hands-on internet workshop using mobile tablets was held at the College. The Years 11 and 12 girls, who volunteered for the service activity, partnered each older member of the community in the session designed to assist them in navigating the internet.

6 A special day to honour all women, and a time to reflect upon the impact of special women in our lives, International Women’s Day did not pass the Fairholme girls by in 2013. Led by the Interact Board, a successful bake sale was held for the girls of the Middle and Senior Schools. $900 was raised on this day, thanks to the girls and staff who baked some amazing treats for this occasion.

In 1997 Fairholme College and Kent College, Pembury, established an annual exchange program for Year 9 girls from the respective schools. Kent College is a Methodist girls’ boarding and day school of some 400 students, located in a rural area of outstanding natural beauty in Kent, an hour south of London, in the United Kingdom.

Last year, after an extensive application process, Georgina Duncan, (Daygirl, pictured far right) and Claudia Dight (Boarder), were the two fortunate recipients selected for the program, and have benefited greatly from their journey abroad.

This year, in late October, Hannah Jakins (pictured centre) and Alice O’Connor (pictured far left) will have the good fortune to enjoy a white Christmas in the UK.

The same can be said for Eliza Smolenski, Anna Jarvis, Kerri Carmichael and Laura Brosnan, who were selected for the 2013 Samuel Marsden Collegiate School New Zealand Exchange Program, which was introduced in 2011. The Samuel Marsden Collegiate School is an Anglican day school of approximately 700 Year 1 – 13 students, located in Wellington, on the North Island.

Our Fairholme Daygirls and Boarders travelled to New Zealand during Semester one. Their New Zealand counterparts will be hosted by Fairholme families in the latter weeks of Term 3. In each case, the Exchange involves time at school as well as some holiday time.

1 Year 7s hit the Australian Capital Territory for a five-day tour from 12 March 2013.

2 Abseiling, rock climbing and canoeing were activities enjoyed during the Year 8 ‘Getting to Know You’ camp at Mapleton, in February 2013.

Year 9 girls braved camping out amongst the cows at Bornhoffen and also enjoyed the challenges of hiking, canoeing, creeking and carrying their packs up the hill to camp out.

Whilst the girls know that they will miss ‘home’, (Hannah admits that being a Boarder will greatly assist in this area), they are very excited about travelling and have spoken at length to other girls who have enjoyed the exchange experience.

Juniors ‘Jump’ on StageStars shone as Fairholme Junior School students ‘hopped to it’ during the performance of Our Tale of Beatrix Potter in late March, 2013. Junior students kept crowds spellbound during another outstanding Junior School musical, written and directed by the Co-ordinator of Junior School Arts, Mrs Belinda Eldridge. Our Tale of Beatrix Potter invited the audience to relive memories of the beloved characters from the enchanting Beatrix Potter stories. In this delightfully aesthetic and magical production, the representations of the life of this popular author and the adaptations of her classical tales are respectful and true to the original texts. Stunning performances were witnessed by girls in Years 1 to 6 over three performances.

In the Swim

2013 has been a great year for Fairholme Junior Swimmers. Winning the Toowoomba Range Swimming Carnival Girls Aggregate trophy at the Range Zone swimming carnival on Tuesday 19 February was a great start, folllowed by some exeptional swimming resulting in the breaking of long-standing records at the Interhouse Year 4 – 6 Carnival (with Black House taking out the points prize).

More success followed at the Andrews Cup Swimming Carnival in March, with Fairholme Junior swimmers gaining second place in the eleven-year age group as well as achieving second place in the Association Percentage trophy. Overall, Fairholme Junior was placed sixth out of ten schools.

Cross Country

Stephens House achieved a convincing win at the Interhouse Cross Country held on Thursday 14 March, with Black House second and Powell House third, followed by Cameron House. The wet weather had not been helpful regarding preparation for the Cross Country but the girls worked hard in their PE lessons and made gains in their fitness levels.

More records borken at Junior Athletics Carnival

The House spirit and friendship amongst the girls made up for the cold breeze that blew most of the day when the the Year 4 – 6 Interhouse Athletics Carnival was held on Fri-day 14 June, 2013. Two records in the field events were broken. In the 10 years age divi-sion, Bella McLoughlin broke the shot put record held since 2011, throwing 8.05m, almost 2 metres further than the existing record. Bella also smashed a discus record from 1999 by throwing an amazing 24.47m, nearly 7 metres further than the record. Chloe Randall broke the 9 years 800m record, shaving 7 seconds off the 2004 time.The Brownlie House Trophy was won by Powell House with 519 points. Stephens House was second with 416 points, Black House third with 395 points and Cameron House followed with 314 points.

2. Fairholme Junior mums relax and enjoy the delicious treats during the FOJS Mother’s Day High Tea held in the Homestead on Tuesday 8 May, 2013. Guests were entertained by the Junior String quartet and talented Senior School vocalists, Meg McBain and Nina Wildman.

3. It was all smiles for Fairholme Kindy students and their mums during their Pampering Mornings leading up to Mother’s Day. Prep Mums were entertained by their daughters in their classrooms at a special afternoon tea.

4. Junior girls loved dressing ‘down’ for Pyjama Day on Monday 17 June. Monies raised on the day were donated to The Pyjama Foundation which offers a learning-based mentoring program free-of-charge to children in foster care.

8Libby Braden (Year 12) and Bridget Madigan (Year 8) enjoy some quality bonding during the ‘Big Sister – Little Sister ’ Breakfast in February 2013, organised by the Boarder Pastoral Care Committee.

Head Boarder, Honor Moore, hosted a fabulous display of talents throughout the Annual Boarder Assembly in a fun program, Farmer Wants Some Mates. ‘Farmer Smithy’s’, trusty cow, Boganella is pictured (aka Hannah Jakins).

Each week the Boarding House offers optional activities for the girls, in addition to the wide range on offer through the College extra-curricular program. The Boarding House Activities Officer, Mrs Philicia Salzke, works with the Boarding House Recreation Committee and the boarding staff to plan a variety of activities both at the College and off campus. A favourite craft activity for the girls this year was the decorating their white sandshoes.

1 Boarders had a ball during their annual pilgrimage to Wet’nWild Water Park near the Gold Coast. The girls conquered the various rides and enjoyed a barbecue lunch before heading back home to Toowoomba.

The Fairholme College Boarders have continued their involvement in a number of community service activities. One of these occurs on Friday evenings when the girls cook and serve dinner at Toowoomba City Church’s Base 57 Youth Group for disadvantaged primary aged children. The girls have come to enjoy their visits as much as the kids, where they also join in and lead many fun ‘after dinner’ games and activities. The Boarders’ Valentine’s Day Dinner in the College Dining Room is always a hit, and here (pictured L-R) Claire Waugh, Bronte Gibbs, and Jane Lafrenz weave some magic amongst friends.

Boarders show their ‘true colours’ during Game 1 of the 2013 Rugby League ‘State of Origin’ series.

The Boarders’ Environment Committee have completed a Boarders’ mural at the entrance to Lower Nancy Shaw. The mural, sponsored by the USQ Partners Program, was designed by the very talented 2012 Year 12 Boarder’ Kate Darlington. It is entitled ‘The Fairholme clothesline’ and features the Fairholme uniform, and symbolises many of the boarding family elements.

The Fairholme Boarding Big Sister-Buddy program has helped many a homesick Boarder through some tricky times. New boarders can ask their Big Sisters for help with issue such as how to get from A to B, identifying new teachers and, of course, how to manage those challenging locker combinations! ARTS The Annual ‘Kaleidoscope

of the Arts’ featured items from all disciplines of the Arts – including Year 11 Dance, Year 8 & 12 Drama, College Choir, Chamber Choir, Stage Band, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Strings, Visual Arts Powerpoint Presentation and solos from Year 12 Music Extension student, Meghan McBain. The finale was a fusion of the Arts with a scene from our Fairholme and Toowoomba Grammar School biennial co-production, South Pacific. It was a most enjoyable night of entertainment and thanks must go to the Supporters of Fairholme Arts (SOFA) for organising the delicious supper which followed.

This weekend of rehearsals, fun and other delights occurred for the first time at the University of Queensland Gatton Campus.

Congratulations to the College Choir and Chamber Choir on their recent successes at the Toowoomba Eisteddfod. Between the two choirs, they received two Highly Commended placings, a second place, two first places and the prestigious ‘Secondary Schools’ Choral Aggregate Shield’. Prefect for the Arts, Laura Heydon, is pictured above with our Eisteddfod spoils. Congratulations also to all girls who participated, and were successful, in the Eisteddfod on an individual level.

String Out is hosted by the College every two years, under the direction of Mr Rod Egerton. On Wednesday 12 June the Empire Theatre once again echoed to the strains of over 250 keen primary school string players coming to-gether for the 9th String Out festival. String Out 2013 offered young students of the violin, viola, cello and bass the opportunity to come together in a musical celebration, on a scale that has to been seen to be believed. A record 33 enthusi-astic Fairholme College string players from Year 3 to Year 7 took advantage of the opportunity to participate in this wonderful event.

S Escaping from the Zoo

Of the 50 works selected for the USQ ‘Escape from the Zoo’ exhibition, 19 were submitted by Fairholme students. A competi-tion for artists in years 10-12, the following girls had works hung in the exhibition: Honor Moore, Jessica Howard, Ailsa Houston, Hannah Bailey, Georgia Devenish, Leisha Parkinson, Laura Guest, Kyra Radke, Caitlin Sorour, Isabella King, Rachel Molloy, Alice Cameron, Claire de Wit, Marli Roos (2 works), Madelaine Firth (2 works), Laura Heydon and Edwina Amos. There was further excitement on open-ing night when Ailsa Houston was awarded the Packers’ Prize ($100) for her work entitled ‘Destruction of Mankind’ and Rachel Molloy was awarded Best 2D work($100) for her entry, ‘Bark Bone’.

SE Extremesland at the Empire

The Year 12 Drama Showcase, The Profiteers was performed on the 4 and 5 of May 2013 at the Empire Theatre Studio to an attentive and appreciative audience. This Brechtian-inspired show, written and directed by Senior drama teacher, Genevieve Duncan, parallels the concept of war with the catastrophic weather event of January 2011, where the aftermath resembled a war zone. The show follows the life of Worthy, a local watermelon farmer, who has lost everything in the Extremesland summer floods. The show was a raging success with staff, parents and friends enjoying a confronting and challenging, yet light-hearted performance.

On 29 April 2013, a lucky group of Year 10, 11 and 12 dance students were offered the opportunity to attend a day-long workshop with the Expressions Dance Company. Expressions has been widely acclaimed for its compelling brand of contemporary dance, and during the day the girls participated in three separate workshops which were run by the company’s associates. The workshops included understanding the importance of balance and counter-balance during partner work, choreography and contemporary technique. Our dancers experienced a demanding yet rewarding day, and learnt many skills which assisted in further contemporary dance classes.

Out of a tremendous generosity of spirit and a desire to give something special back to the Stephens House community and the group of special Year Twelves in 2012, Mrs Shelley Hindmarsh (Mother of Karlea, Senior 2012) made a mini ‘Steph’ for each of the 26 seniors in the House.

Sixteen brave Fairholme Seniors sacrificed their locks to raise almost $20,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation on Thursday 20 June 2013.

Fairholme’s Interhouse Swim Carnivals 2013

Years 4 to 6 kicked off the Junior Interhouse Swim Carnival on Thursday 21

February with great spirit and encouragement for

each other’s efforts. Special congratulations to the winning house, Black House (first win

in six years).

The next day, Years 7 to 12 took to the pool for the fiercely

contested Middle and Senior Interhouse Swim Carnival

on Friday 22 February. The meet is comprised of both

individual age champion events, and a series of relays that foster participation, with each student swimming in at least two events. This year’s

March Past saw Powell House emerge victorious in securing

the elusive Stan Klan March Past Trophy. Mr Byron opened

the day’s proceedings and racing began, accompanied by

deafening cheers, war cries and jump and jives, with each

House striving to be louder than the last. At the day’s end,

points from all races were added up to reveal the winning

house. Congratulations once more to Powell House. Thank

you to all of those involved in making this meet a huge

success, including the parents, Friends of Sport and Swim

Club parent volunteers.

2012 Queensland Primary School Swimming Relay Championships: 23 November

Twenty swimmers from Fairholme Junior School, comprising three 10/under and two 12/under teams, competed at Chandler Aquatic Centre against 41 other schools from across the State. This was the largest number of swimmers the school has ever entered in this event, and reflected the current depth of swimming at Fairholme College. The 10/under ‘A’ team were the stars of the night, finishing 4th in the Freestyle Relay and 3rd in the Medley Final, in what were highly competitive races. To have our first placing in 10 years at this meet, and for two of our teams to make their final, was outstanding.

Our swimming squad of 32 swimmers brought home the Girls Aggregate Swimming Shield from the Range Zone swimming carnival at Gatton. The girls scored over 500 points more than their nearest competitor. Congratulations to all members of this team, as each one of them contributed to the successful day.

Prep to Year 3 had their day in the water on Tuesday 26 March. Our swimmers of the future put their two-week Learn to Swim Intensive Program skills to the test and had an exciting, fun day at the pool. The encouraging spirit shown

from the girls, along with remarkable talent, was a delight.

2013 TSSS A Schools Championships: 5 March 2013

This is the premier external swim meet on the Fairholme College calendar. The swimmers selected to represent Fairholme were the best of the best, and as the team aimed for Fairholme’s 12th consecutive win, pressure was no small matter.

Against increasing opposition from St Ursula’s, Glennie and Downlands swimmers, our girls continued to show ‘the at-titude’, swam fast, and proved victorious. Of course, our se-nior swimmers – Kate Brassington, Ailsa Houston (Captain) and Georgina Rackemann - showed the biggest attitude and the ability to lift for the occasion. On the first Friday of Term 1, all swimmers from Middle and Senior School were invited to attend a special Swimmers’ Breakfast at Fairholme Sports foyer. This was a chance for all swimmers to hear about important dates in Term 1, to meet coaches

and to find out about swim training at Fairholme Aquatic Centre. 2013’s breakfast saw a record number of attendees, as 55 Fairholme girls enjoyed cereal and pancakes.

TOUCH down! The Fairholme College Open and 15 Years Touch teams were on fire at the All Hallows’ Tournament held in Brisbane on Sunday 18 April, 2013. Both our Open A and 15A teams won the Grand Final in a drop off. Our 15B team also won their C Division Grand Final. Many thanks to coaches Craig Collins, Brenda Rackemann, Stacey Byrnes and Jenny Webster, and to Pacific Seeds and Rackemann’s BP Chinchilla for their generous sponsorship, providing the new polo shirts that the team proudly ‘sported’ during the tournament.

Cross Country Age Champions lead squad to Championship events

The 2013 Cross Country season commenced with over 70 runners named in the initial school squad. The Interhouse Championships were held at Kearney’s Spring towards the end of Term 1, with over 300 runners contesting Championship events. Age Champions on the day were Amilia Schooley (12yrs), Grace Lange (13yrs), Natalie Webster (14yrs), Nikki Cornwell (15yrs), Julia Algie (16yrs) and Chelsea Draper (Open). The team fared well in the Queensland All Schools Cross Country Championships in May, resulting in Fairholme achieving second place overall. Further medals were awarded after a successful meet at Canterbury College in Brisbane and, to top off the season, the Fairholme College Cross Country team was awarded second place at the Darling Downs Regional Titles in June.

Kicking Goals Congratulations to the Fairholme U14 Futsal team on their success at the Australian Futsal Association - South West Queensland Schools Futsal Titles, held on 29 May 2013. It would seem this is the first time in Fairholme’s history that a Futsal team has taken out a Regional title. This achievement is exceptional, as the girls competed against some highly skilled teams from other schools and entered the Futsal tournament simply to gain experience and enjoy the day.

‘Serving’ it up at Sacre Coeur Twenty-two girls, accompanied their by coaches Gavin Wright and Bri Tilley, headed to Stuartholme School in Brisbane to participate in the annual Sacre Coeur Tennis Tournament (Term 2). The girls competed against players from Downlands College, Stuartholme and Clayfield College. The Fairholme Year 9 and Open A Teams was runners-up: and Fairholme were placed third overall. Riding High at the 2013 Darling Downs Interschool Equestrian Regional Championships

Fairholme’s talented Equestrian team competed strongly throughout the Darling Downs Interschool Championships held on 10, 11 and 12 May 2013 and produced outstanding results in the following disciplines:

Fairholme Riders Excel at 2012 National Interschool Equestrian Championships

More than 300 of Australia’s most promising young riders assembled at the Toowoomba Showgrounds in Octber 2012, for the National Equestrian Championships. Fairholme 2012 Equestrian Captain, Anna Bourne, and Year 8 Boarder, Anna Elder, represented Queensland, and competed strongly throughout the Championships, with outstanding results. As members of the largest team, with 118 entrants, the two riders competed in the Showman classes and the Challenge event, which combines a number of disciplines.

Anna Elder was named Australian Champion, riding Dookami Hocus Pocus in the 60cm Showman and finishing well clear of her competitors. With a combined score of 323, she finished over 22 points ahead of interstate competitors. Given that Anna Elder was only in Year 8, this was an outstanding performance against girls much

older than her. Anna placed a credible 7th in the Challenge which was the final event of the Championships. With these combined results from the week-long Championships, Anna was awarded the title of Supreme Champion in Showman, beating all riders who contested this category.

2012 Equestrian Captain, Anna Bourne, finished just outside the placings in both of her events, only two points below the 2nd and 3rd placed riders in Showman 85cm to finish 4th on her horse, Unicorn Park Revenge, and placing 5th in the Challenge.

The College Community congratulates both riders on their excellent results at the highest level of Interschool Equestrian competition.

Howzatt!

Congratulations to Year 12 cricket sensation, Alice Smith, who will join girls from Western Australia, Victoria and Queensland to tour Sri Lanka via Malaysia from the 30 June – 12 July 2013.

The Young Cricketers Development and International Experience Program will include a Triangular Series between teams from Australia, Sri Lanka and India; the highlight of the tour will, without a doubt, be to play against and train with the Sri Lankan ‘A’ Women’s side.

Throughout the trip the girls will be playing as an international travelling team and will get to experience some of Sri Lanka’s top-ranked cricket grounds, including their main Stadium in Colombo.

What an opportunity for girls of this age to experience travelling and playing cricket as an International team and to help develop women’s cricket.

Alice says she is honoured to be gaining a once-in-a-lifetime experience in her chosen sport, and representing her country against other countries around the world. We look forward to Alice sharing her experiences with us on her return.

Breaking Records

Javelin throwers Ellie Bowyer (Year 8) and Katie Lowe (Year 10) are continuing Fairholme’s lengthy tradition of javelin excellence with both athletes recently (2013) producing exceptional results.

Since Fairholme’s establishment, the College’s best performances, recognising the leading performances in Athletics and Swimming were kept on record. Athletics Australia introduced the new weight of 500 grams in 2011, replacing the 600 gram javelins thrown previously by schoolgirls aged 14 years and older. Katie Lowe established the longest throw with a 500 gram javelin at the 2012 Secondary Queensland Championships, throwing a distance of 36.57 metres.

Ellie Bowyer threw the 400 gram javelin at the 2013 Queensland Athletics Interclub meet, establishing a best mark of 47.11 metres. This throw also bettered the existing Queensland Age Record by over 4.5 metres.

The girls’ success follows on from previous Fairholme javelin throwers, including Australian record holder, Stephanie Hancock (1998-1999), and Australian representative, Alicia Utschink (1996- 2000).

Both girls are members of the College’s throws program under the guidance of Head Throws Coach, Grahame Pitt, who will travel to the World Youth Championships.

Gold for Fairholme Girls… As they competed at the Queensland Junior Athletics Championships

A number of outstanding results were recorded by athletes at the 2013 Queensland Junior Track & Field Championships, with Ellie Bowyer scoring a rare triple in the field. The outstanding Year 8 athlete won Gold in all three throwing events (Shotput, Discus and Javelin), recording some impressive distances along the way.

Samantha Lenton, competing against athletes a year older than her, secured the Gold medal in both Discus and Shotput while Emma Elsden (Senior 2012) won Gold in Hammer and a Bronze medal in Shot. Emma has returned to Fairholme in 2013 as a member of the throws coaching panel.

Sprints coach, Lauren Murry, also experienced success on the track with Silver and a PB in the 400m Hurdles.

Talented distance runner, Mackenzie Andrews, won Gold in the 800m and finished just outside the medals in the 1500m.

Athletics Captains, Meg Pegler and Jessie Harper, also competed at the three-day Championships, with Meg claiming a Bronze medal in the Shot. Jess finished second in her heat of the 400m but unfortunately had to withdraw from the final due to a minor back strain. Sophia Harper also contested the 400m, finishing 5th in her heat.

Head Throws Coach, Graham Pitt, once again had an outstanding Championships with his throwers producing 13 Gold medals from a total of 16 Championship placings.

Super Fish selected to swim for Australia

Seven State Records and International Honours for Year 10 Swimming Sensation

Few swimmers could hope for a better start to the season than Fairholme student Julia Algie. Following her outstanding success at the Queensland Secondary School Championships, where she set seven State Championship records in the Multi-Disability Class, Julia has been selected to represent Australia at the Deaflympics in Sofia (Hungary).

She will join over 4000 athletes from more than 70 nations at what is the second oldest multiple-sports games outside of the Summer Olympics.

First held in 1924, the Deaflympics provides elite sporting opportunities for hearing-impaired and deaf athletes, and is sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee. (Deaf athletes are excluded from the Paralympics due to their inability to hear starting commands).

The 2013 Deaflympics, the 22nd instalment of this long-running event, will commence on the 26 July and conclude on 4 August. Just like the Olympic Games, the event is held every 4 years, with 16 sports being contested in Bulgaria in 2013.

Laura Geitz Netball Shield

Congratulations to the Yr8/9 Laura Geitz Shield team for finishing as runners-up in the 2013 Regional Finals. After going through the competition undefeated, they were beaten by Centenary Heights SHS in the Grand Final, by just two goals. A fantastic effort by the team: Zara Dowsett, Rozan Huskisson, Rosie Statham, Ash Reddacliff, Issy Carey, Adelaide Veal, Grace Scanlon, Matilda Meppem, Bri Dascombe and Ash Reimers. (Coaches were Cindy Hughes and Sasha Perina.)

Chess Champions

On the weekend of 15 and 16 June 2013, the Toowoomba Secondary School Individual Chess Championships

were held. Overall there were 49 players from the Toowoomba district, with the only four female players all hailing from Fairholme!

Congratulations to Madeline Firth (1st Place – Outstanding Female) and Emily Wilson 2nd Place – Female) as well as our other representatives, Torie Harrison and Eloise Slack-Smith.

This tournament has a high player standard and the girls are to be congratulated on their overall performances. They gained valuable experience, which will be very useful for the interschool

team tournament in August.

Peak to Park

Despite the very ordinary weather, Fairholme College was again very well represented at this year’s annual Peak To Park Funrun/walk Charity Event.

The competition took place on a course from Picnic Point to Lake Annand and this year more than $30,00 was raised for nominated charities.

Riding High

Talented Year 6 Endurance rider, Alissa Woods successfully completed a 160km endurance ride held in Charleville earlier this year. Alissa was placed equal 2nd in the junior division, in a ride that began at 3pm and carried on throughout the night with 3x 40km sections and 2x 20km sections, finishing around 10am the next day. This was a great reward for Alissa after working hard to prepare for this event, with both horse (Quartz) and rider needing an incredible level of fitness. Alissa qualified to ride at the National race, the ‘Tom Quilty Gold Cup 2013’ held in June, another 160km event held in Kilkivan, Queensland, in which she also enjoyed sucess, riding alongside her mother.

‘Reflections’ from the Alumni DeskI continue to enjoy witnessing the ‘connectedness’ of Fairholme Old Girls during encounters of the most agreeable kind: reunions, luncheons, special events, meetings and, most importantly, visitors to our College.

2013 has seen the introduction of a new ‘meeting’ procedure for FOGA Toowoomba in a bid to continue that feeling of being connected. Monthly gatherings now involve a ‘social segment’, and we have had the good fortune to listen to Choir and solo performances from our current Arts students, stories from girls who travelled to the Mizpah Orphanage in Southern India and Old Girls chatting about their forays into various chosen careers. A very warm and open invitation is extended to all to attend these gatherings, held on the third Wednesday of each month in the Homestead at 4pm.

As our body of ‘archives volunteers’ grows, so too do the number of friendships and relationships formed. I am constantly amazed by the clarity of memories shared and the passion with which our Old Girls speak of their treasured time here at Fairholme.

I am equally impressed with the enthusiasm shown by Year Level reunion co-ordinators -– thank you for your time and energy. As you can see from the reunion details listed (left), we are still in need of some Year Level reunion co-ordinators and I encourage anyone interested to contact the Alumni Office. We endeavour to make this task as effortless as possible, and are more than happy to distribute invitations and correspondence or provide assistance wherever needed.

Thanks for making 2013 another great year for Fairholme Alumni. It has been my absolute pleasure to catch up with so many FOGs at various functions this year, and I look forward to seeing you all in October during our Spring Fair Reunion Celebrations.

The Macadamia Nut Tree and other archival treasures…

Many of our treasures in the Fairholme archives are made for a specific purpose, such as prize books and bookplates, blazers, badges and photographs. We have received many significant items over the past few months, including a special treasure – a hand-stitched cloth badge that was once part of a Presbyterian Ladies’ College hatband. Gold on a blue background, it is the same design as the present Fairholme badge. This is the only item we have from the Presbyterian Ladies’ College (1915-1917), the forerunner of PGC Fairholme.

Other Fairholme treasures cannot be boxed or stored – such as the historic trees in the grounds of Fairholme. The palm trees in the SG Stephens Memorial Avenue (Palm Avenue) next to the oval were planted in 1926 by Mr Stephens. The original drive was lined by camphor laurel, bunya nut, pine and fir trees, some of which remain. The ‘Bonney Tree’, planed in 1979 by Mrs Lores Bonney, a pioneer airwoman, remains a fixture near the Daisy Culpin Courtyard.

One particularly significant tree is the old Macadamia nut tree (Queensland nut tree) next to the Science labs. Old Girls from the 1970s remember with relish how they smashed and ate Macadamia nuts on the pathway near the trees, a tradition that continues in 2013! Could this be the same tree that three Fairholme girls wrote a

poem about in the 1932 magazine? [Extract from poem in 1932 Magazine pictured left]

From the Archives foga‘F for Fairholme’ Banner

Thank you to everyone who helped with the archival mystery in the last Focus. From the information we’ve gathered, it seems that the ‘F for Fairholme’ banner was indeed a sports banner used during the 1940s. Its origin remains a mystery. The photo in Focus was of the Fairholme team in the Grand Parade of Athletes at the All Schools’ Sports Day on 1 September 1945. The Flag is being carried by either Beryl or Betty Wormwell (1936-45).

Kerry Andersson (2004-05) took out the Calico Brides Design Award at the Brisbane Convention Centre in April 2013. She designed and sewed a bridal outfit made of calico as part of a Fashion Design course at the Australian Institute of Creative Design in Brisbane – while finishing off her studies in Health Science.

Gina Horn (1996-2007) was a guest speaker at last year’s Founders’ Day celebrations. She completed a Bachelor of International Hotel & Tourism Management at UQ in 2011, majoring in Event Management. Currently, Gina is Events and Marketing Administrator at RealWay Australia while also teaching and choreographing dance at The Grid Hybrid Arts Collective and studying for an Advanced Diploma of Nutritional Medicine at AIAS.

Renee Lockwood (2003-07) is teaching at St Anthony’s School in Toowoomba and accompanied her students on an excursion to Fairholme recently, where they met Pastor Jessup and spent some time in the New Chapel.

Alexa McNaught (2001-05) has graduated in Medicine and been accepted into the specialist program to become an orthopaedic surgeon. There

are currently no female orthopaedic

surgeons in Queensland and only 12 in Australia. Alexa is pictured centre with Fairholme friends, Stephanie O’Dea (right) and Sophie Tobin (left) at a recent reunion in Sydney.

Sophie Elliott (2002-06) has been helping her parents on their property at Winton since finishing at Fairholme, and has self-renovated an old run-down cottage on the property and turned it into a home. She is a part of the day-to-day processes of running the property and, to her Mum’s excitement, took over all the bookwork and business side of operations. Sophie also works part time in Winton with the National Australia Bank, and is on the committee of the first Youth Beef & Sheep Forum, run by Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) in Longreach.

After an exhausting audition process Chiara Osborn (2008-12) is now enjoying her first year of the Queensland University of Technology’s Fine Arts (Acting) degree – widely regarded as one of the leading schools for potential stage and screen actors. More than 500 people auditioned for just 16 places, with Chiara being called back for further auditions until just 40 remained to take part in the ‘screen-test’ stage. Watch this space!

Melissa Tickle (1996-2002) hit the spotlight recently whilst performing as lead singer in the standout four-piece folk band, Little Scout. Melissa then headed to the studio with Patrick Elliott (bass and lead guitar), Miro Mackie and her sister Kirsty Tickle (Keyboard and vocals) (Fairholme 1996 -2006) to record the band’s second album due for release in 2013.

Since relocating to the US in 2000 to advance her optometry and research career, Fairholme College Old

Girl, Shirin Hassan (1986-91), has been making major inroads into the study of street crossing decision-making behaviour by pedestrians with low vision and other visual impairments. Recently, Shirin was awarded US$2 million by the US Federal National Institutes of Health to evaluate the street crossing decision-making performance of visually impaired, blind and elderly pedestrians in real, outdoor traffic environments.

Shirin is a low vision optometrist and was appointed as Assistant Professor at the Indiana University (IU) School of Optometry, Bloomington, USA, in 2007.

Women’s Rugby League star Stephanie Hancock (1998-99) has been named in the Australian Jillaroos Squad which will contest the Festival of World Cups in England in July. Steph was a member of the talented Queensland team who achieved an amazing 15-match winning streak in this year’s Women’s Rugby League Competition.

Georgina (Georgie) Somerset (Robinson) (1983-84) appeared on the panel on the ABC’s Q & A program recorded on at the Empire Theatre in June 2012. Georgina lives on a property outside Kingaroy and is a beef producer. She is Vice-President of the National Foundation for Australian Women, and a member of the National Rural Advisory Council and the Queensland Women’s Consultative Council.

Angela Burgess (1998-2005) attended an international cheerleading competition in America in December 2012. Her team, ‘Aussie Spirit’, performed exceptionally well over the two-day competition, overtaking the American grand national champions to

win their division. The team received medals, winner’s jackets and a team plaque and banner. Angela’s club team (River City Spirit) then went on to compete at the Wold Cup Cheers and Dance Regionals in Brisbane, taking out the Level 2 Open Division. To make it three in a row, the club was then named the Asia Pacific Champions and High Point Winners for 2012. We look forward to hearing more of Angela’s successes in the near future.

Former Toowoomba artist, Bronte Naylor (2007-11) returned to the Garden City in February to stage a combined exhibition with Alison Mooney entitled ‘Lost and Found in My Head’. The Show, which was on display at ‘The Grid’ in Ruthven street, received rave reviews and featured a broad range of mediums such as ink, aerosol, watercolour, salt and Ajax!

Successful actor, director and writer and Fairholme Old Girl, Judy Morris (L’Armand) (1955-64) was recently named as the first female ‘Fellow of the Empire Theatre’. Ms Morris’ claims to fame include a role in the television show Mother and Son, the film Phar Lap and co-writing the Academy Award winning Happy Feet with George Miller.

Kathryn Parkinson (1992-2000), an accountant in Sydney, is doing brilliantly in Triathlon. She came first in her age group at the Cairns Ironman Triathlon in April 2013, with a time of 10.21.52. This qualifies her to compete in the Hawaii Ironman later this year, and follows on from her success in October 2012, where she came 4th in her age group at the Kona World Ironman Championship.

It was double the excitement for two Fairholme Old Girls’ at the Bond University Humanities Awards Night held earlier this year as they took out awards for excellence.

Jessica Foot (2003-09), who is studying for her Bachelor of International Relations/Communications (Business), was the recipient of a Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Academic Excellence. Mary Grant (2005-09), who will graduate with a Bachelor of Laws/International Relations (Business) next year, was the recipient of a Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence.

Mrs Jayne Davidson (1973-74) emailed this lovely photograph of her daughter Belinda Davidson (1992-96), with the roses her fiancé, Marcus Katter, presented her with when he proposed.

Christie Menzies (2004-05) and Cameron McLennan announced their engagement in February 2013. Christie is the daughter of Greg and Gayle Menzies (Taroom), and Cameron, the son of Peter and Helen McLennan (also of Taroom).

Warner - Willis: The engagement of Alison Ruth Willis (1994-99) and John Kenneth Warner was announced with much pleasure earlier this year.

Heidi Somerset (1996-2008) and Nick Harrigan announced their engagement on 25 May 2013.


Jo Capp (Geddes) (1979-86), St Vincent’s Hospital Toowoomba’s Community Relations Associate, was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship by the Rotary Club of Toowoomba. Recognition as a Paul Harris fellow remains a respected and prestigious honour, and recipients receive a pin, medallion and certificates that identify them as advocates of the foundation’s goals of world peace and understanding. Jo is pictured above receiving a donation to St Vincent’s Hospital from 2012 Fairholme Interact Club members.

Jess Reinhart (2004-11) continues to be a star in the pool, being named Female Freshman of the meet at a recent College swim meet in the USA, where she is studying at Liberty University in Virginia. Her wins in the 100 yard and 200 yard butterfly events meant she has qualified for the US Open in August 2013.

Namali Harch (1997-2001) married André Holwerda on 5 January, 2013, at the stunning Gabbinbar Homestead in Toowoomba. It was a perfect day and there were some very special surprises throughout the day including a horse-drawn carriage, ‘thank you’ cakes for the parents, a vocal solo by the groom and a beautiful rendition of ‘The Prayer’ by the bride and groom. Namali and André enjoyed their honeymoon in Fiji and have made their residence in Rothwell (Redcliffe).

Gary Chiconi and Jessie Hindle (2002-06) were married on 28 April 2012 in Roma followed by a reception at the Explorers Inn. Gary is the youngest son of Noel and Jo-Anne Chiconi of Taylors Plains, Mungallala. Jessie is the eldest daughter of Lindsay and Belinda Hindle of Fairfield, Roma. The Bridal party included Alex Hindle (2006-08) (Maid of Honour), Lewis Rolfe (Best Man), Jessie Roberts, Warren Chiconi, Penny Mackenzie and Ben Hindle. Gary and Jessie honeymooned in Fiji and have made their home at Taylors Plains.

Amy Hagan (2000-06) and Matt Hayes were married on 6 October 2012 in the gardens of Gabbinbar Homestead, Toowoomba. The newlyweds enjoyed a Gold Coast honeymoon and now reside in Toowoomba.

Michael Salt married Terrena Duncan (1997-2000) at her parents’ Flagstone Creek property on March 24, 2012. The newlyweds honeymooned along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria.

High School sweethearts Haydn Acton and Yana-Marie Kisiel (2004-2008) were married recently at St Patrick’s Cathedral followed by a reception at Gabbinbar Homestead.

Rachael Kerridge (2000-05) (pictured right) married Peter Trethewie on 29 September, 2012 at the Gold Coast. The pair held their ceremony at St Andrew’s Chapel at Robina Woods, before celebrating with friends and family at Burleigh Heads. Fairholme Old Girl Ellen Brodie (2000-05) was bridesmaid, (pictured second from left) and fellow Fairholme Old Girls Ann Doljanin (McClymont) and Felice Caffery were also in attendance.

Miss Isabel Nelson came to Fairholme in 1946 as a young teacher and stayed for 20 years, leaving at the end of 1966 to work in Canada and the UK. Over the years she travelled through Europe, South America, South-East Asia and New Zealand with her good friend, June. Miss Nelson taught at St Hilda’s at Southport and St Carthage’s School in Brisbane during the 1970s before retiring to Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast, where she passed away on 15 May this year. She was 85.

Miss Nelson, known to the girls as ‘Nellie’, taught Year 6 in the Fairholme Preparatory School until 1950, when she moved to the Upper School and taught Typing and Bookkeeping. She was Cameron House Mistress and Junior Form Mistress (Year 10) for a number of years. Miss Nelson was also a very good tennis player, and established the Fairholme Tennis Club in 1956. Fairholme Old Girls remember that she used to ride her pushbike to school, and also organised bicycle excursions to Drayton, where the girls would enjoy a picnic before riding their bikes all the way back to Fairholme.

Muriel Krimmer was born on 31.12.1912 and attended Fairholme from 1925 to 1930. Her sister Dorothy was also a pupil around this time. This was Miss Culpin was headmistress and Muriel has very fond memories of her. Muriel was a prefect (pictured far left) and member of the basketball team which won the premiership of the Downs.

Having passed the Senior exams in 1930, Muriel was invited by Miss Culpin to return as a member of staff, which she did for a couple of years on a wage of one guinea per week.

After working for a couple of years in Toowoomba for Groom and Lavers, Muriel moved to Brisbane, working at the Electric Light Company and Goldsborough Mort.

Muriel never married and maintained the friendships she made at Fairholme through FOGA.

In later years Muriel was handicapped through failing eyesight but managed to keep very much abreast of world affairs, both sporting and political, and resided at Compton Gardens Retirement Village at Aspley. She celebrated her 100th birthday on New Year’s Eve 2012 with her many nieces & nephews at Wheller Gardens, but sadly, she passed away on 28 March 2013.

A Fairholme Farewell to one of our OLDEST Old Girls

The members of the Old Girls’ Association were saddened in July 2012 when their much-loved Trea-surer, Margot Mary Curtis (1943-44) passed away on her 84th birthday.

Margot very much enjoyed her involvement with the Old Girls, and was known for her attention to detail and meticulous record-keeping. She treasured her many friends from her days at Fairholme, and her dry wit and interest in all things Fairholme are sorely missed.

Margot began her working days at the Millmerran Shire Council, and was then employed as a Bookkeeper at Perpetual Trustees and St Andrews’ Hospital. She was a dedicated volunteer with Meals on Wheels, and was recognised for having spent 60 years as a Justice of the Peace, and over 50 years as the Treasurer of the Range Tennis Club.

Margot was the sister of Desley Coulton (Curtis) (1950-52), the sister-in-law of Daphne Curtis (Anderson) 1945-47) and the much loved Aunt and Great-Aunt of Jenny Sutton (Curtis) (1968-72), Katie Murray (Sutton) (1995-99) and Rachael Curtis (1998-2012).

Members and Friends of the FOGA Brisbane Branch enjoyed another delightful annual luncheon held at the Mt Ommaney Apartment Hotel on Saturday 16 March 2012. FOGA Brisbane President Mrs Daphne Stewart caught up with Fairholme Archivist Mrs Jenny Noble (Pictured above). After a successful 20 year reunion, the class of 1987 had renewed many friendships and contacts, and

so we were keen to get together again to celebrate 25 years out of school. Our function was at Gips

Restaurant on the Saturday night of the Fairholme Reunion weekend. We had a mix of boarders and day girls, including some girls who had not made it to the

20 year reunion, so it was really lovely to see those faces again.

There were lots of laughs as we went through a slideshow of old photos. Those 80s haircuts and

fashions do come back to haunt you! Laurinda Hinder (nee Plant) put together a Reunion Booklet for the girls of 1987 so even those who couldn’t make the reunion could let us know what they had been doing over the

last 25 years.

Thank you to all those girls that made it to the reunion, especially those who had travelled to be

there. It was a great night and look forward to seeing everyone back for the 30 year reunion.
