Our Christmas letter is fromRev David Harper

Dear Friends

I know that December is likely to be a busy month for many of you. Bothin your home and family life and in the life of the Church, Christmas bringsa round of activities to attend and work to be done. This edition of “Focus”lists the programme of activity in our church this month.

December is the month when most churches record the largestcongregation of the year and significantly the services at which more

“occasional attenders” are present. It is often the candlelit carol service,or a nativity service where children are involved. We are, of course, always glad to see more and more both regular and occasional visitorsin church.

As a minister it has often concerned me that we do not see theseadditional worshippers with us become regular frequent worshippers -and most importantly dedicated disciples of Jesus Christ. We know thatthey will hear the words of Scripture read and sung in the carols thepreachers do their best in the understandably short spot they have. Howcan we lead these friends on to know more of the Gospel ?

I do not have any easy answers. The Sunday after Christmas is known inthe Christian calendar as “Low Sunday” and is clearly not the bestopportunity. Is there mileage in a “post Christmas” special service ?

I have come to think that the most significant way we can make best usein terms of God’s Kingdom at this time is in the quality of the welcomewe give and the attention we give to the presentation and publicity wegive. Let us do what we can to make people feel at home in the churchsetting that may be for some unfamiliar even threatening. Rememberthat all that is familiar to those who are regular worshippers may bestrange to those who are not.

The Christmas message is captured in the words of the carol ”He camedown to earth from heaven” that is an amazing truth about the love ofGod, the Creator of the spectacular universe, whose beauty andcomplexity continues to be revealed through the technology of our day.

This love is demonstrated in the way that in Jesus He has shared ourhuman experience. Our task as the Church in every generation is to findhow best we can communicate the reality and relevance of the truth tothe people of our day. The “down to earth” message is at the heart ofChristmas.

Enjoy your Christmas celebrations! Be careful in all the events that willtake place in the church and community to show by our care the realityof the “down to earth” love of God.

Blessings to you all David Harper

He came down to earth from heaven

Who is God and Lord of all.

And His shelter was a stable

And His cradle was a stall

a blizzard stranded the tiny village of Ogledorfnestled in the Austrian mountains

That same day the people of St. Nicholas' church foundtheir organ broken

so the priest and organist began composing a song thatcould be sung without

an organ yet beautiful enough to express theirChristmas joy

All day and all night long they workedand at midnight the gentle carol

Silent Night was born

The pure clear tones echoed through the hills

and the world has been captured by the beauty of thatsimple song ever since.

Silent Night

Holy Night

All is calm

All is bright

Christmas Tree Festival

to all groups or individuals planning their tree:

We have set aside Thursday 7 and Friday 8 December toorganise the trees and decorate the church.

If you would like to assemble your tree yourself it would behelpful if this could be done on the Thursday.

Someone from the decorating team will be in the churchbetween 10 am and 4pm.

If you would like us to assemble your treethen could you make it available by

Wednesday evening 6 December or themorning of the 7th.

We cannot decide on the position of eachtree until we have them all and then we willbe able to see the most effective way ofdisplaying them.

So, at the moment it all seems vague but we are confident ofthe end result.

Thank you all for your enthusiasm for this event and we hopeit will attract many people into our church.

who have just celebrated their 5th birthday!Balloons, cake, badges and a washing line ofthankfulness. All of these were involved in our recentcelebrations to mark 5 years of Sunday@One.

During the special service, with over 50 people inattendance, we heard from Brenda Reade and MichaelFranklin about some of the history of the service and theirexperiences of being involved. Everyone then had theopportunity to write down something they were thankfulfor and attach it to the ‘washing line of thankfulness’ wehad put up in the hall.

It was a great occasion as we remembered and celebratedall that had happened over the last 5 years including thegrowth we have seen, people who have become Christiansand got baptised, and the hundreds who have beenwelcomed in.

In the midst of all this I preached on Philippians 3:1-14and urged us not to find confidence in our pastachievements though, with Paul we can count them allas garbage in comparison the surpassing worth ofknowing Christ Jesus our Lord. He is a safe source ofconfidence for us as we head in to the next 5 years andbeyond.

A recent development for us in the drop-in has been thatwe now have drop-ins within our drop-ins! Every fortnightwe have someone from the job centre come along for afew hours to offer advice to anyone who needs it foranything related to finding work or benefits. In addition,One Support, who provide housing advice, have juststarted offering the same service. This has been a greataddition, to have this expert advice available just a fewmetres away!

At the beginning of November, we had the pleasure ofwelcoming 4 students from the International ApostolicBible College in Denmark. They were only in the countryfor one week, mostly based at Kesed church, but it wasgreat to see them get involved and get a feel for the workwe are doing here amongst the vulnerable in our town.

We are always looking for more people to join the team soplease don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like toknow more. Ongoing training and support is providedso all you need is a listening ear and a heart for themarginalised.

Mum, Gwen Matthews, amazingly celebrated her 100th birthday onOctober 26th which she enjoyed with family and friends. She and my dad,Eric, were members of Eld Lane for many years and that was where mybrother, Trevor, and I also became members in our teens having attendedSunday School, YPF, Youth Club, Girl's Brigade etc.

Dad was a deacon and Sunday School Superintendant whilst mum sangin the choir led by Enid Brook, was leader of the Junior Sunday Schooland did various admin jobs like printing and collating the church magazine. She and Dad moved to Shimpling from Colchester in 1985 to be nearerour family.

She spent her birthday at our home with old friends from the villagepopping in and family visiting for a tea party. Of course she was delightedto receive the birthday card from the Queen as well as about 75 other cards.

May I take this opportunity, through the pages of Focus, to thank thosewho remembered Mum on her birthday and to particularly thank Henryand Vivien Spyvee, Pam and Keith Simpson, Barbara Whiter and Helen,Rodney and Margaret Sawtell and Joyce Miller (Mum's cousin) for theirlovely cards.

She also appreciates receiving Focus regularly and keeping up to datewith the news of Eld Lane.

Many thanks, Hilary Rooke

The MindrulerSteve Pillinger

“When we returned to the UK from Kenyain 1997, both Johanna and our daughterJennifer suffered from chronic fatigue. This meant that we were hard put to findenjoyable family times together, as wecouldn’t go on outings or other activitiesthat required a lot of energy. Wetherefore came up with the idea of our

‘Family Game’.

This was an imaginative role-playing game with a Christian worldviewand Christian goals. We would all sit down together on a Sundayafternoon round the dining room table, with drinks and some nicegoodies, and Dad (as the gamesmaster) would present the rest of thefamily with the latest predicament they had to get out of in theimaginary world we had created. Everyone had their own character inthe game, and after each Sunday episode I would write up the latestevents in a Diary, which we’d read at the beginning of next session.

For several years we had wonderful times round the Family Game tableevery week, until approaching A-level school exams brought it to an end.By then the story we’d built up had expanded into quite an excitingChristian thriller—and the thought came, Hey, others might enjoy thisas well! We could turn our Family Game into a book …

And so The Mindruler had its earliest beginnings. I (Steve) startedweaving a coherent story out of the diaries, adapting as I went along,so that gradually the characters took on a life of their own and the plotwas deepened and tightened up. I attended a writers’ workshop inLondon, organised by the Association of Christian Writers, which helpedto hone my skills.”

I felt I couldn’t write a better review than Steve has written here. Having“spoken” to Steve and therefor assuring myself that it really was our StevePillinger I bought the book for my Kindle – only £3.98 – and started toread.

Four very different characters find themselves on a strange planet withno idea how they got there. They had all been to a church where theyhad been told that they would achieve important things in anothercountry.

For any lovers of fantasy their journey with those from this strange placetakes them through a battle between good and evil with their own faithstrengthening as they go.

It’s not always comfortable reading, bad things have happened in thename of faith in the past and this is no different. Steve’s love of languageis evident in the speech of these strange people and the country, peopleand animals become familiar.

I recommend this to older teenagers and above and look forward to thenext book in the trilogy.

JUNE’S JOURNAL

After last month’s suggested headings for this, and having retiredfrom journalism in 1993, I thought the above title might fit the bill!My whole idea in getting involved is not to criticise (far from it) butto draw attention to items which readers may either miss orotherwise pass over.

I am so pleased to note that the November issue included a numberof items which appear to be in response to Shirley’s appeal forcontributions. Well done!

The longest of these was contributed by Benson and well worthattention. It matched many a sermon from the pulpit and providedan opportunity to quietly curl up in a chair and really digest it atleisure. There were also two items which repeated the desire to seethe baptistery open, (pages 5 and 21) On that subject, by the way,I hear that Sunday @ One have a baptism coming up. (Praise the Lord).

I like Susan’s ‘Fascinating Facts for Focus’ and can’t wait to find outwho the mystery man is! The plug for Henry Spyvee’s book should besnapped up for three good reasons: it’s a really good read, has goodpictures and it’s a bargain at £3.

In October’s Focus Lynsey was into eating the Muslim way. Thismonth we have Marie telling us about other groups who are feedingpeople in a big way! 760 meals is no mean task and it was good to notethat the meals were not only hot but also healthy! We can allcontribute to this if we include the work in our daily prayers.

I’m sad that only 30% of the ‘congregation’ took part in theListening Audit. Could it be that some of our regular, and valued, attenders don’t consider themselves to be part of the wholechurch? Or do they think it’s only for ‘members’?

I believe I am safe in stating that, if you love Jesus and attendour church regularly, you are part of our church family. Onthe other hand taking out membership would solve the problem.‘Congregation’ does indicate all those gathered, whereas ‘member’is a person who belongs.

Many of our young students who are living away from home mustnow be looking forward to the Christmas break. However, iftheir home is in Japan it’s not so easy and those at Essex Unimust be very grateful for Eileen’s efforts. It’s both challengingand interesting to befriend foreign students at any timethroughout the year. Eileen did missionary work in Japan formany years – now she’s working in Colchester!

”When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house they saw the child with his mother

Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him”(Matthew 2 v 10/11)

As we enter God’s house this Christmas may we allexperience that joy as we worship Jesus.

The Balfour Declaration

On the 7th November 2017, Jenny and I joined with 3000 otherChristians and Jews to mark the Centenary of the BalfourDeclaration.

This was an amazing event and we were treated to a presentationthat we will never ever forget. There was a 500 strong HollandChoir, Redeemed Christian Church of God mass choir, the IsraeliDance Institute, the Israeli Shir Klezmer Ensemble, acclaimedFinish violinist Serguei Popov, Caleb Alalade, Tally Koren andmany more.

There is so much I could write about but limited space in Focusonly permits me to give you an ‘overview’. The event went fromGod’s promise to Abraham in Genesis (chapters 12 and 15), theBalfour Declaration, the Battle of Beersheba in 1917, therebirth of the State of Israel in 1948, the British betrayal ofthe Government mandate to closing speeches by today’s‘millennial’ Christians and Mark Regev the Israeli Ambassadorto the United Kingdom.

If the Editor permits, I will write a more detailed report ofthis most important event for insertion into an upcoming Focus?

Feast of Tabernacles = London 2017

Barry and Batya Segal from ‘The Joseph Storehouse’ & ‘VisionFor Israel’ held the 2017 London Feast of Tabernacles at theEmmanuel Centre, Westminster on the 20th & 21st October2017. Jenny and I were determined to attend although we’vebeen trying to go for the past 3 years.

This year I’m happy to say we made it and what a fulfilling anduplifting event it was.

The Feast of Tabernacles is one of the most joyful holidays inthe Jewish calendar and is a time to give thanks and praise toGod for His faithfulness and provision. There was lots of praiseand worship. We sang hymns and praise songs in both Hebrewand English. We also heard messages from speakers, PastorDennis Greenidge, Pastor Wes Richards and Pastor DerekWalker.

If you’ve never been to the Emmanuel Centre, it’s truly wortha visit. Beautiful architecture and full of historical value andstill today is an active Church.

MRS CATHARINE BUCHANAN ALDERTON MBE (1869-1951)

Mrs Alderton (CBA) was the first lady to be Mayor of Colchester, servingin 1923/24. She was the equal third woman to have this honour in thecountry. She became a Councillor in 1918 just before women got the vote. Two other ladies quickly followed, one of whom, Catherine Hunt, fol-lowed CBA as Mayor. It was not until 1953/54 before another ladybecame Mayor. In 1928 CBA became the first lady to be an Essex County Councillor. Shestood twice for Parliament in the 1920’s although not locally. Her portraitin mayoral robes painted by local artist Frank Daniell hangs in theMayoral Suite of our Town Hall. Her MBE was awarded in 1944 forservices to local government. Alderton Road off Harwich Road is namedfor her.CBA was a passionate suffragist until women got the vote. She was of thewing of the suffragettes opposed to violence, led by Millicent Fawcett(1847-1929). CBA was a member of Lion Walk Congregational (nowUnited Reformed) Church of which her father Thomas Robinson wasMinister in her young days. One of CBA’s achievements was to revolutionise the Oyster Feast. It hadbeen an all-male affair until her mayoralty. Even when women firstbecame Councillors they were not invited. As Mayor CBA could invitewho she wanted and did. Catherine Hunt followed her lead so when theMayors became male again a tradition of mixed attendance had beenestablished. Among her speaking guests were the Duke of York (laterKing George VI) and Millicent Fawcett. Thus Millicent became the firstwomen after CBA herself whose voice was heard at an Oyster Feast. In June a plaque, organised by Colchester Civic Society of which I am anExecutive member was unveiled on her former home in Cambridge Road.It was unveiled jointly by Jenny Stevens, the senior Liberal Democratformer lady Mayor and a great-grandson of CBA. I had the honour to MCthe occasion. When I was a boy Mr & Mrs Alderton were my next-door-but-one neighbours so it was a surreal event for me.

The Civic Society is nominating CBA to be one of them. Ifsuccessful she is likely to be the only local person on the list so shouldgenerate some publicity.

You may legitimately ask what this has to do with Eld Lane.Research by one of my colleagues reveals that CBA came as Mayor toour 234th Church Anniversary in November 1923 and unveiled the WarMemorial still visible on the front of our premises. That whole wing ofthe church was erected as a war memorial.

A stone laying in September 1923 is recorded in the church history(p.113) but CBA’s involvement is new information.

Car park donations 2018

Donations for the use of the Church’s parking facility in Vineyard Streetin 2018 are now due. The amount payable for 2018 is £40, unchangedfrom 2017.

I shall be pleased to receive your cash or cheque together with your upto date registration number of your car(s) as soon as possible. Pleasenote that cheques received in December will not be banked untilJanuary.

Please continue to observe the following:

1. The use of the car park is limited to paid key holders who regularlyattend Colchester Baptist Church. This facility should not be used by thekey holders’ children or their extended family.

2. Only one Authorisation card/ disc is issued to each household and itshould be displayed in the car being used to identify the Authoriseduser. Two registration numbers can be put on the card where there aretwo cars in the household. This is so that their two cars are notoccupying two spaces at the same time.

3. The car parking facility is intended for short stay parking and keyholders actually working in the Church. It would be most helpful if keyholders shopping in the town/or visiting banks, dentists, hairdressers, etc, could use the car park in the afternoons wherever possible to relievethe problems we have on the morning.

4. There is NO parking facility for long stay parking i.e. for those inemployment in the town or attending colleges.

5. It is most important that all users to lock the barrier on entering andleaving the car park at all times. Although this is burdensome, it doeslimit its use by unauthorised persons who take advantages of free parking. If all keys holders display the issued parking card/disc in their car(s) wecan more easily identify intruders.

6. The key to the barrier is for the use only of the paid up key holder, and must not loaned, copied or passed on to any other person.

7. No parking is allowed in any spaces marked LW. Pleased would everykey holder co-operate for the benefit of us all.

And may I ask any present key holders not using the car parking facilityto return their keys to me so that they can be used by new members andregular attenders of the Church. Thank you
