At delfort, we are very aware that with this strategic and

commercial success comes responsibility – responsibility to

the environment, to our employees, to our communities and

other stakeholders. And, of course, responsibility to our cus-

tomers.

For this reason, delfort continues to focus on achieving

growth that is sustainable, in every aspect of the word – eco-

nomically, environmentally and socially sustainable.

This ambition is reflected by our continued commitment to

consistent and transparent sustainability reporting against

the internationally recognized GRI G4 Guidelines. This re-

porting process and the development of supporting KPIs has

helped to ensure that we concentrate on the most important

issues and it provides a platform for driving continuous im-

provement.

This commitment is reflected again in the results presented

in this year’s report, which confirms further successes in a

number of key areas. In particular, we are very pleased to,

once again, see a significant improvement in water use. Al-

though our own risk assessments have shown that delfort

operations are low freshwater consumers within the peer

group, we are aware that water quantity and water quality

issues are a high profile environmental concern within the

paper industry. Our improvements in 2016 build upon sig-

nificant gains made in previous years and contribute to a

long-term improvement trend in total water use and water

consumption per unit of production. This is despite the ad-

a message fromthe board of directors

Welcome to our 2017 sustainability report, which covers the

tenth year of operations since delfort was established in 2006.

During this exciting time, we have continued to strengthen

our position and reputation as a secure and growing business

partner for our clients. The integration of our latest acquisi-

tions – the mundet group and delfortgroup printing services

(formerly Shamrock Specialty Papers) – further consolidates

our position as an innovative and customer-focused top

three market leader in five of our business areas whilst simul-

taneously strengthening our reach in North America.

Subsequently the business has increased significantly in

scale since our last sustainability report was issued. Total

employment has increased by 17 % up to 2,377 employees

and turnover has increased by 5 % up to 782 million.

ditional challenges of the need for very pure water of our

speciality grades, therefore making it an achievement that

we are particularly proud of.

Our 20-20-20 goals have also continued to drive improve-

ment in our energy consumption, sourcing and related GHG

emissions. These targets were established with the intention

of reducing GHG emissions by 20 %, increasing our share

of energy consumption from renewables by 20 % and im-

proving energy efficiency by 20 %, all by 2020 compared

to our baseline year of 2006. We are very pleased to an-

nounce that, ahead of schedule, we have already achieved

our GHG emissions reduction goal. Compared to 2006, total

GHG emissions are down by 23 % despite the significantly

increased scale of the delfort business. At the same time, the

share of renewable electricity sourced by the company has

increased to over 58 % as we continue to work towards our

target of renewable purchased electricity for all mills where

this is technically possible by 2020.

As a family-owned company with global presence we recog-

nize that our employees are our most valuable resource. At

delfort, we encourage all our employees to contribute their

individual skills, know-how and experiences in order to form

unique and creative collaborations. This helps drive our cus-

tomer focus whilst promoting genuine innovation in products,

production and business processes. We are constantly look-

ing to the future and how we can improve for the benefit of

the company and our customers. With this in mind, delfort

has successfully implemented an apprenticeship program for

paper technologists which has now delivered its first seven

graduates. We look forward to reaping the benefits of this as

well as other educational and training programs that are be-

ing pursued across all levels and functions of the organization.

Further, a key challenge for 2017 will be aligning the new fa-

cilities within the delfort family with our environmental and

social sustainability goals and objectives, whilst developing

and implementing appropriate KPIs that recognize the dif-

ferent nature and requirements of the printing and convert-

ing activities compared to papermaking. This is a challenge

we have already begun to address through our materiality

workshops and subsequent sustainability planning. Despite

our continued expansion and growth, delfort maintains a

company culture that supports quick and open communi-

cation across the group. That is why we are confident that

these new additions to the company will rapidly become

aligned with the sustainability ethos that has been fostered

within delfort over the past decade, and we therefore look

forward to another year of sustainability success.

Relevance

Papermaking is an energy intensive process, requir-

ing both heat and electricity. Where fossil fuels are

consumed, GHG emissions and emissions of NOX

rise. delfort’s papermills rely on a variety of strat-

egies and energy mixes. Strategies are in place to

reduce emissions that arise from both fuels con-

sumed on-site as well as purchased electricity. At

the same time delfort is generating and using 16 %

of it's own electricity. In our energy reporting, del-

fort covers both internal Scope 1 GHG emissions

and NOX emissions (arising from fuels consumed

on-site) and external Scope 2 GHG emissions (aris-

ing from purchased electricity).

Our key drivers

Returning again to the principle “more is less”, en-

ergy efficiency is the primary focus for the business.

Within the delfort energy mix, electricity repre-

sents a significant share of the overall energy con-

sumption and is a major source of our emissions.

Subsequently, delfort is committed to significantly

increasing the share of purchased electricity and

self-generated electricity from renewable sources.

Management approach

The overall approach to enhancing energy sourcing

and consumption at delfort is underpinned by our

20-20-20 goals:

■ reduction of GHG emissions by 20 % by 2020

from 2006 baseline;

■ increasing our share of energy consumption

produced from renewable resources by 20 % by

2020;

■ a 20 % improvement in energy efficiency by 2020

from 2006 baseline.

delfort is also part of the EU Emissions Trading

Scheme and has appropriate systems and process-

es in place to manage the high energy demand

of papermaking. As part of the approach, delfort

has implemented a certified energy management

system across all mills. This provides the platform

for energy efficiency activities. At the same time,

our purchasing team is working on developing con-

tracts with energy suppliers to increase renewable

electricity share up to 100 %. Subsequently, two of

our mills already purchase entirely renewable elec-

tricity, with plans in place for more mills to join.

37

Performance

GHG intensity per unit of production has reduced as our en-

ergy efficiency programs started delivering results. This year

in particular, the application of energy and mass balance

analysis techniques to our air systems as well as steam and

condensate systems led to the generation of numerous pro-

jects across the delfort mills. Tailored to the needs and op-

portunities at each plant, these projects involved investment

in new technologies related to hall and hood ventilation

systems, heat recovery from exhaust gases, and efficiency

measures in the steam and condensate system.

At the same time, delfort has made continued progress to-

wards purchasing renewable electricity at all possible pro-

duction locations by 2020. Subsequently, the overall share of

total electricity consumption (purchased and self-generated

electricity) that is renewable increased from 56 % in 2015 to

58 % in 2016.

As a result of these efforts, since its foundation in 2006

delfort has dramatically improved its performance. Over

the past five years, despite increased production, total GHG

emissions have been reduced by 12 %. This builds upon ear-

lier gains of delivering a 23 % improvement compared to the

baseline of 2006. This means that our goal to reduce GHG

emissions by 20 % compared to 2006 baseline levels has

been achieved well ahead of target.

At the same time specific NOX emissions have remained sta-

ble on a low level over the past five years and in the long

run they have been reduced by 39 % since our 2006 baseline

year.

Relevance – significant employer

The close collaboration with our business part-

ners contributes extensively to the group’s busi-

ness objectives and developments. Every day, our

employees work passionately towards delivering

added value to our customers by offering them tai-

lor-made solutions. For this reason, our qualified

staff is one of the most important key pillars of our

current and future success. At the same time, each

of delfort’s sites is a substantial employer locally,

contributing greatly to the economy of the commu-

nities in which we operate.

Our key drivers –

think global, act local

delfort’s HR strategy is focused on attracting and

retaining a highly qualified workforce. delfort is an

equal opportunities employer and emphasizes on

employing the most experienced individuals with

the highest qualifications. The group is known for

its leveled hierarchy, modern and flexible organiza-

tion and its high employee orientation.

Our HR strategy is based on a vivid and dynamic

culture driven by our brand values of collaboration,

empathy, creativity and performance. Our commit-

ment to a joint corporate culture contributes to our

approach of “think global – act local”.

Management approach –

supporting a team-oriented culture

A trustworthy and team-oriented culture across

the mills is supported by specific programs for oc-

cupational health and safety, staff retention and

training. Considerable investments in employee

and leadership development programs across the

group contribute to high performance and foster

appreciation. In addition to professional skills, we

support our employees’ health, motivation level and

work satisfaction with our “thinkhealthy” program.

In 2016, thinkhealthy received its 3rd consecutive

award for workplace health promotion in Austria.

Implemented at all sites, thinkhealthy includes

more than 400 customized activities, like spon-

sored health check-ups or free fitness classes. Our

development programs not only support a healthy

and engaged work environment, they also provide

Performance – empowering our people

With the integration of delfortgroup printing services and

the mundet facilities total employment across the organiza-

tion has, once again, increased significantly. In addition, new

hires for the year totalled 249 compared to 235 exits, result-

ing in a year-end headcount of 2,377.

As would be expected for a manufacturing business, the

majority of the workforce is blue collar. Reflecting delfort’s

commitment to recruiting and retaining a quality workforce,

all staff members are on permanent contracts with only few

members on a fixed-term contract to fulfill specific tasks.

delfort is conscious that our team members need an ap-

propriate work-family balance. The company is particularly

sensitive to ensuring that both female and male employees

have appropriate parental leave opportunities and we focus

on reintegrating women into the business after maternity

leave by offering appropriate return-to-work opportunities

and conditions.

In a dynamic economic environment, the need for inno-

vation has always been undisputed. Product lifecycles are

becoming shorter and the needs of customers in terms of

innovative, customized solutions with improved function-

ality and speed-to-market have increased. On top of that,

decreased development time, without sacrificing quality

or the capability of meeting the needs of the market, are

crucial for a successful collaboration.

delfort leverages an integrated and structured innovation

management system as the key to success and has signifi-

cantly accelerated the evolution of the process in 2016.

Alfred Spitzenberger, corporate innovation manager at

delfort, talks about everyday opportunities in innovation

processes:

for a sustainablefuture

innovation

04

long-termvalue

What is the significance of innovation at delfort?

The innovation spirit at delfort is based on our

skilled, motivated and passionate employees and

a culture approaching open-mindedness, out-of-

the-box thinking and a collaborative spirit. Collab-

oration is reflected in the co-working process with

suppliers, customers, external laboratories and uni-

versities. Moreover, creative collaboration between

our employees across the sites and departments is

the fundamental cornerstone of increasing our com-

petence to exploit research results at an early stage.

How does delfort promote innovation?

Innovation management at delfort consists of

three components: the process, our innovative

culture and the framework. Only if those three

components go hand in hand, we can boost

added value for our customers. With the help

of effective and efficient methods we can create

more output with less resources. This results in in-

creasing speed-to-market, faster responsiveness to

changing market needs, new competitive products,

and cost savings from reduced consumption of re-

sources.

How does delfort manage an integrated

and structured innovation process?

Our evolutionary approach is to create solutions

that are meaningful, promising and commercially

successful for our customers. Our method is based

on the stage-gate-process, which evaluates each

stage before the next step is initiated. This struc-

tured process involves the development of new,

as well as the improvement of existing products,

processes or services, all the way to the successful

launch on the market.

What is the framework for successful innovation

management?

Driven by a strong commitment of the board, the man-

agement of paper mills and strategic business areas, inno-

vation is seen as an organizational skill that will pave the

way for constant growth and ensure long-term security for

our valuable stakeholders. A structured process allows the

purposeful deployment of manpower and the prioritiza-

tion of projects with respect to feasibility, benefits, timing

and resources.

What have been delfort’s achievements in 2016?

In 2016, we have accelerated our efforts to improve our

innovation management system. Essentially, we have fo-

cused on two main areas: our knowledge management

and the restructuring of the development processes with

the aim of increasing efficiency in internal and external

collaboration. Internally, we have launched a knowledge

map to collect and structure existing knowledge and make

it accessible to all paper mills. We have established com-

munities of practice on a regular base, offering internal

experts the opportunity to meet once or twice a year in

person as well as exchange experiences digitally on an on-

going basis. We have also fostered our collaboration with

external institutes, laboratories and universities. In the fu-

ture, we will further expand internal and external network-

ing and cooperation in order to fulfill complex and specific

customer needs.

How does the innovation process support the

development of sustainable solutions?

Our company spirit and strategies provide the framework

and the development process to ensure that only the most

attractive ideas will be realized.

Innovations are a necessity for the creation and devel-

opment of new products that can be used to replace

non-renewable materials with renewable, recyclable and

low-impact alternatives. We truly believe that our solu-

tions already contribute to a more sustainable world. Mini-

mizing the negative environmental impact by optimizing

processes and products while maximizing the sustainable

goals of our customers is essential in the innovation pro-

cess.

The second aspect is the economical use of re-

sources. The efficient use of materials and energy

are as important as the optimization of processes

while making use of previous learnings.

Who is involved in the innovation

process at delfort?

Innovation at delfort is seen as an organizational

skill and everyone is contributing to the different

aspects, like scouting, strategy, development and

implementation.

Our sales teams and technical customer service

play an essential role and are in contact with our

customers on a daily basis and aim to grasp the

best understanding of their needs. Likewise, suppli-

ers, research institutions and industry organizations

are contacted to deliver important input for future

development work. In 2016 we fostered a strong

collaborative attitude at group level to exchange

this knowledge and to accelerate ongoing initia-

tives and identify new ones.

How to protect the innovative and

new solutions?

Our innovative products and solutions are the ba-

sis of our success and therefore worthy of protec-

tion. Together with our customers and suppliers, we

develop and modify papers, add functionality and

efficiency in processing. To secure our pioneering

achievements and to protect the interests of our

customers, delfort files patent applications on a

regular basis. In 2016 delfort filed 32 patent appli-

cations, increasing our total patent portfolio to 303

patents and patent applications, of which nearly

40 % have been granted already.

Additionally, due to non-disclosure agreements

many of our solutions are trade secrets and an ex-

pression of the close and trustworthy relationship

with our customers.

With the acquisition of mundet in February 2016 and

delfortgroup printing services in August 2016 delfort started

to offer its customers added value along the whole value

chain. The recent investments are part of delfort’s strat-

egy to further foster its long-term partnerships with its US

based customers. Both companies offer design, printing and

converting expertise for flexible packaging and the cigarette

industry. Therewith delfort expands its existing product port-

folio of paper production with printing solutions and offers

its customers an improved supply chain for North America.

“Customers will take major advantage of the combination of

delfort’s strengths as a global specialty paper manufacturer

for the whole solution range involving cigarette, plug wrap,

tipping base papers and bobbins along with a wide range

of papers for specialty product applications. In addition, our

outstanding innovation management and product develop-

ment expertise along with product compliance know-how

and active sustainability management are further enhanced

with the addition of mundet’s and delfortgroup printing ser-

vices’ local production and expertise to our group,” explains

strates such as film, paper and light weight board,

which are produced in 3 facilities in Tennessee,

Roslyn and Mexico. The product portfolio also in-

cludes sheeting, cutting, embossing, die cutting,

and paper film combination products. mundet

supports the tobacco industry through its supply

of decorative tipping papers along with LIP, inserts,

onserts, soft pack labels, closures, as well as em-

bossed and hot stamped foil materials.

teabag paper.

Both companies are renowned by its US-customers

for their quality, relationship management and

to our business partners in the US shortens transport

routes, which finally results in lower greenhouse gas

emissions.

Within the last year, effective progress has been

made towards the integration of all sites into the

group in the fields of finance, sales, manufacturing

and IT. All sites have adopted the uniform reporting

systems of the group and have aligned processes in

order to establish even higher reliability and effec-

tiveness during the production process. Additional-

ly delfort has invested in a new laboratory area as

well as in upgrades of machineries which supports

a consistent high quality product.
