Amrun (South of Embley) Bauxite Project
Rio Tinto will expand output from one of the world’s premier bauxite deposits following approval of the US$1.9 billion Amrun project.
Amrun involves the construction of a bauxite mine and associated processing and port facilities on the Cape York Peninsula in north Queensland.
The planned initial output is 22.8 million tonnes a year, replacing production from the depleting East Weipa mine and increasing annual bauxite exports from Cape York by around 10 million tonnes.
Production and shipping are expected to commence in the first half of 2019, ramping up to full production by the end of the year. The project’s design provides options for future expansion to 50 million tonnes a year.
$2.5b for project and $1.3b annually to QLD economy.

Aplin and Lake Street Hotel
Ghassan Aboud Group have acquired the 4000sq m, vacant block at the corner of Aplin and Lake streets with plans to build 200 hotel rooms and 100 apartments at the site with preliminary designs already under way.

Caravonica Aged Care Facility

Cairns Aquarium and Reef Research Centre
The Cairns Aquarium will be a 16 metre high, 3 level, 7,500 square-metre (75,000 square feet) World-Class modern and iconic building providing a CBD family attraction. Once completed it will have more than 3 million litres of salt, fresh and brackish water displays and showcase the incredible species and habitats found exclusively in Queensland’s Far North. Visitors will be able to see many of the creatures that cannot be found anywhere else in the world or are rarely seen due to their nocturnal habits. Several rare, endangered, unusual, and even deadly specimens will be on display. The aquarium is expected to attract about 700,000 visitors annually.

Cairns Regional Council - Cairns Performing Arts Centre
The Cairns Performing Arts Centre (CPAC) will be built on the previous site of the Cairns Civic Theatre, bounded by Florence, Sheridan and Grafton streets.
The new CPAC will be three storeys high and have a footprint more than three times the size of the pre-existing Civic Theatre.
The CPAC will deliver:
Increased seating capacity of 940 in the main auditorium (up from 669 seats)
Increased foyer capacity to cater for 1,000 people (up from 200) and improved public amenities

There are also major upgrades in technology to create a state-of-the-art, regional theatre that meets the needs and expectations of local, regional, national and international performers.
Cairns Regional Council - School of Arts building renewal
Construction started on the refurbishment project in March 2016. The building will be extended on the Shields Street side to provide two full floors plus a mezzanine level to be utilised by the Cairns Historical Society. This new museum space will be in addition to that which the organisation has tenanted since 1980, allowing the museum to expand significantly.
The upgrade will also include:
new mechanical and electrical services that meet Australian standards;
replacement of the air-conditioning system;
restoration of the Art Deco awning and façade at the northern end of the Lake Street part of the building that is masked; and
an upgrade of the ground floor space for commercial use.
The museum is currently closed but it will reopen at this same location once major renovation and extension works are complete.

City Centre Alive: Shields Street Heart
The Shields Street Heart project is a component of the City Centre Master Plan that aims to continue to improve and revitalise the Cairns CBD. It is the second revitalisation project, following completion of the City Centre Alive Lake Street connection project in 2014.
The Shields Street Heart project promotes a walkable and pedestrian friendly city centre with increased retail activation to help attract more visitors and draw residents back into the city centre. Key components of the upgrade include contemporary lighting, landscaping, public art and parkland improvements.

Port Douglas Water Supply Reservoir: A new reservoir and water mains will alleviate issues—including low pressure, insufficient storage and deteriorating pipes—and ensure adequate supplies during the dry season and peak tourism times.
Enabling Aged Care in Mossman Far North Queensland: The groundwork is being put in place for the much-needed aged-care facilities in Mossman with the delivery of enabling infrastructure. By delivering the roadworks, sewerage and drainage expansion, headworks and electrical sub-station, this project means the 42-bed aged care facility will be available sooner for residents of Mossman and surrounding communities.

JCU Australasian Institute of Tropical Health & Medicine Thursday Island
AITHM is building a Clinical Research and Training facility on Thursday Island in the Torres Strait. The facility is adjacent to the Torres Strait Hospital and will contain a PC2 laboratory, patient interview rooms and a large community space. The facility will enable AITHM and other researchers to undertake research in the Torres Strait. In addition, the community space will provide an ideal platform for engagement with the Torres Strait community and the hospital service. The building is due for completion in March 2017.

James Cook University On-Campus Accommodation
Accommodation for hundreds of students is to be built on James Cook University’s Cairns campus. The accommodation is being designed by Wilson Architects and built by ADCO Constructions.
JCU will invest $40m to develop the 300-bed accommodation on its Smithfield campus.
The seven storey, 9,450m2 complex will offer a mix of accommodation options including studio apartments with ensuite bathrooms. The development will also include a ground floor retail space, which could include a coffee shop.

Metro Mining Ltd (ASX:MMI) Bauxite Hills Project
Metro Mining’s Bauxite Hills project is located 95 Kilometres north of Weipa on Cape York Peninsula. Metro holds strategic tenements covering 1,300 square kilometres. The simple mining operation allows for a low capital and low operating cost project and facilitates a quick start-up from the commencement of project development. With a Direct Shipping Ore (DSO) resource of 65.3 million tonnes and a mine life in excess of 13 years, Bauxite Hills has been classified as a Project of Regional Significance by the Queensland Government.

Ravenshoe Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade: Council is catering for future growth and economic development by replacing a facility that can treat 500kL/day of sewerage and service 1060 people with one that can treat up to 650kL/day and service around 1460 people, based on a 1.61% annual population growth rate to the year 2035.
Council operators will be upskilled to manage and operate the new facility, broadening their expertise to bring them in line with other operators across the shire.

The Kidston Project: Genex Power
Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Generation Project
The Kidston Pumped Storage Project is located in Northern Queensland on the site of the historical Kidston Gold Mine. The site is situated some 270km north west of Townsville near the township of Georgetown.
The Project, which proposes to transform the disused Kidston gold mine in into a large-scale hydroelectric power plant to supply the State of Queensland during periods of peak demand, will deliver between 300MW and 430MW of power into the transmission network.

The mining leases for the $140 million Watershed tungsten project north of Cairns have been granted by the Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines. In addition, Vital Metals has been awarded two additional tenements in close proximity to the Watershed Project, significantly expanding the company’s footprint in the highly prospective region.
The company’s aim is to apply geological expertise to build a pipeline of projects supported by the Watershed mining operation. Plans are for 6000 tonnes of tungsten concentrate a year worth about $270 million today.

The mineral processing involves the separation of the heavy minerals (>4m specific gravity (SG) density) including zircon-titanium minerals and iron oxide minerals in the sand from the lighter (<3SG) quartz and calcareous sands. No chemicals are required for HMS processing or HM concentration.
The HMS processing rate will be approximately 110 tonnes per hour (~270,000 tonnes per year) to produce HM concentrate over a ~4 year mine life.
