Many complications can occur later in life due to childhood obesity such as: (1) Type 2 Diabetes Hypertension Metabolic Syndrome Cardiovascular disease Higher stress risk There is an increased number of children who are overweight and obese when attending schools who offer foods that contain: (3) Empty calories Added sugar High fat Low fiber Schools should focus on adding: (4,5) Fruits and vegetables Whole grains Breakfast More physical education Many students currently lack nutrition knowledge. In addition, children are not participating in nutrition-related activities such as: (6) Gardening Choosing healthy foods Recycling Composting Combating Childhood Obesity Through Nutrition Based Education Josie Mansperger and Courtney Mosler Worldwide, approximately one third of adolescents age 2-19 years old are classified as either overweight or obese (1). Children and adolescents who have a BMI at or above the 85 th percentile and below the 95 th percentile for children of their same age and sex are considered overweight (2). In the same respect, children and adolescents who have a BMI at or above the 95 th percentile for children of their same age and sex are considered obese (2). Children who fall within these categories tend to be at a higher risk for adulthood obesity and obesity-induced diseases (1). Nutrition and physical activity play a crucial role in healthy childhood development. Children typically enter school around age five; therefore, schools play an important role in providing physical and nutrition education to promote healthier growth. It is critical for schools to implement nutrition education to combat childhood obesity. Proper nutrition education gives children the knowledge and tools they need to make healthy choices to have throughout their life. Due to the lack of public policy regarding nutrition education in schools, a nutrition course should be executed in all school systems (7). Nutrition courses should be taught by a nutrition professional. Courses should be offered at least once a week for an entire academic semester. Implementation of nutrition courses in schools have been shown to increase student nutrition knowledge, academic performance, and promote healthier lifestyle habits (5,8). Seventh grade students at Christ the King School in Toledo, Ohio currently have: No nutrition course Catered lunches Access to classroom Chrome books A nutrition class was offered for these students to learn about how nutrition can impact their life. Pre- and post-tests (2 weeks post education) were used to assess knowledge gained. Areas of education include the importance of: Breakfast Physical Activity Fruits and Vegetables Whole Grains Parents, guardians, and teachers who are the children’s support system need to understand the impact nutrition has on health (9). Ways to educate support system: Provide handouts Hold a ”Nutrition Night” once per academic semester Mandatory quarterly faculty meeting Promote quarterly nutrition rotations Physical activity, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, mental health positivity, etc. It has been shown that when children are educated on nutrition, they are more likely to lead a healthier lifestyle (4). Results of pre-test will most likely show: High sugar consumption High fat consumption Low fruit and vegetable intake High screen time Adequate – low physical activity Adequate breakfast consumption Moderate stress More bought lunches than packed Results of post-test will most likely show: Something new learned Increased consumption of fruits and vegetables Increased breakfast consumption What can be done to promote nutrition education in schools so that childhood and adolescent obesity rates decline? Here are a few actions that can be taken: Contact your local legislators to advocate for a nutrition course to implement in school systems. Take 10 minutes to go speak with someone today about why nutrition is so important Volunteer to help serve school lunches Promote children to take the fruits and vegetables Talk with your parents or children about nutrition related topics Promote children to pack healthy lunches as opposed to buying lunches at school Reduce screen time for all ages while promoting physical activity Have a good coping mechanism when stressed instead of turning to food Physical activity Coloring Talking with a friend Listen to music Write in a journal Summary Research Introduction Experience Practical Application
