  • Now that summer is in full swing theres nothing better than gathering with family and friends for a traditional outdoor BBQ. Folks at Camp Red Cloud Mitchells Club and the Camp Casey Gateway Club feel the same way. Both clubs are now off ering BBQ delights once a week where customers can enjoy their hot off the grill BBQ ribs, hamburgers, hot dogs and more under the

tent or take it home. The BBQ specials have been available for several weeks already and, by all accounts, customers love it.

Mark Onstad, Mitchells Club Manager, says the original idea was to off er customers delicious BBQ-fl avored smoked pork ribs or chicken-on-a-stick to take home at the end of their working day. One day a week, every Thursday at 3 p.m., Mitchells Club staff blocks off the main club parking lot and sets up tents, tables and chairs and fi res up the grills. Before long smoke rises above the parking lot and the smell of BBQ pork and chicken fi lls the air. Food sales begin at 4 p.m. sharp.

The popular menu includes smoked pork ribs, roasted chicken, sausage on-a-stick, BBQ pork, chicken or beef pinchos (on-a-stick), hot dogs and hamburgers. You can also get side orders of baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, macaroni & cheese or dinner rolls to make your BBQ meal complete.

A variety of combo plates are also available and customers can purchase side orders or single items at very reasonable prices.

Chris Kruszynski, Gateway Club Manager, is not to be outdone. The Gateway Club BBQ is available every Tuesday beginning at 4 p.m. Those who have already tasted their ribs say theyre just outstanding. The Gateway Club BBQ To Go menu includes smoked pork ribs, roasted chicken,

sausage, pork, chicken and beef pinchos (on-a-stick), with available side orders of baked beans, coleslaw or potato salad. You can

get hamburgers and hot dogs hot off the grill as well.Combo plates are also available Tuesday afternoon at the Gateway Club BBQ to eat in or take out.

Sound inviting? Make it a point to stop by Camp Red Cloud

Mitchells Club any Thursday afternoon after 4 p.m. or the Camp Casey Gateway Club on Tuesdays after 4 p.m. for some outstanding hot-off -the-grill BBQ meals to eat in or take out.

DMZ Tour Guidelines- When viewing the Conference Room, do not touch any

equipment belonging to North Korea.- Do not speak with, make any gesture toward, approach

or respond to personnel from the other side.- Military or other offi cial considerations may prevent

entry into the JSA. - Casual clothes, such as ripped jeans, sleeveless shirts,

miniskirts, short pants, military clothes, and sandal/slippers are not permitted during the tour.

    - Shaggy or unkempt hair is not allowed.- Children under 10 years of age are not allowed.

The Joint Security Area (JSA)The JSA resembles a square measuring about 800

meters across. After the Armistice Agreement was signed, the JSA became a neutral location where guards from both sides were allowed to move about freely. It was the only place in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) where the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) was originally not clearly marked.

That changed after North Korean guards murdered two United Nations Command (UNC) offi cers with axes on August 18, 1976. After the Ax Murder Incident, the MDL was marked within the JSA, and that marking system continues until today.

The only place where border crossings are allowed is inside the conference buildings of the Military Armistice Commission (MAC). The MDL in the JSA is marked with one hundred and twenty six one-meter high white stakes at 10 meter intervals. Throughout the rest of the DMZ, the boundary is marked with MDL markers. Each side owns six guard posts in the JSA and no more than thirty fi ve armed guards can be present on each side.

The JSA is a venue for exchanges and negotiations between the North and South. A variety of political and economic issues, cultural conferences and Red Cross meetings are held in the JSA.

The Third Tunnel is the largest one discovered so far, indicating North Koreas desire to invade Seoul during that time.

  • Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) has been providing quality recreational opportunities for Single and unaccompanied Soldiers since 1989. Here in Area I, BOSS off ers a variety of programs including leisure trips, sporting events, community service opportunities, talent shows and more.

BOSS recreational needs often diff er from those of single Soldiers back in the States says USAG Red Cloud/Area I Command Sergeant Major Michael Hatfi eld.

BOSS events are a great way for Soldiers to explore Korea without having to worry about coordinating everything, unlike in the States where they may have many things to do off post and they can easily make their own plans. Soldiers stationed here dont really have that, CSM Hatfi eld says.

As a feature writer for In the Zone magazine, I recently joined a group of Area I Soldiers on a BOSS Summer Thrills trip to fi nd out what its like to experience a BOSS excursion fi rsthand. As a civilian not knowing what to expect, I was ready and eager to give it a go.

Two Soldiers celebrating their fi rst birthday away from home especially enjoyed the trip. PFC Brittany Gardner celebrated her 20th birthday away from home having fun with fellow Soldiers.

SPC Vanessa Chand of G CO. 1-15 Field Artillery, who often participates in BOSS activities, also celebrated her birthday on the trip.

Ive been on several BOSS trips, including temples and the DMZ tour, which was really cool. I really enjoyed them. I do my best to let others know about BOSS trips and encourage them to come along, she says. Whenever I sign up for a trip I tell people in my battery to come along as well.

CSM Hatfi eld says individual Soldiers getting involved and helping to promote BOSS trips is important. He says Soldier participation is crucial

  • to the overall success of the program at every level, from coming up with ideas for BOSS events to planning and execution.

Area I BOSS President SSG George Banduc agrees, explaining that BOSS trips and events begin with Soldiers themselves. Any Soldier can suggest a trip or activity to their Company BOSS representative, who will take it from there. SSG Banduc says its really that simple.

Were always looking for new ideas, he says. We need Soldiers to speak up so we know what theyre interested in. More often than not, we can deliver what they want and save them money in the process with big discount rates, he says.

BOSS programs are off ered at much lower rates than other FMWR programs, which is a huge advantage for single Soldiers according to Camp Casey CSM Alexander Peden.

Aff ordability is a key feature of the BOSS program. Were always trying to come up with new, aff ordable events that appeal to all single and unaccompanied Soldiers, he says.

CSM Ann Sydon, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, says its smart to participate in BOSS trips because of the quality of the trips and the huge discount prices.

Its really a great deal for BOSS Soldiers. Id like to see more single and unaccompanied Soldiers take advantage of these outstanding recreational programs off ered in Korea, she says.

This particular trip left a lasting impression on

  • CPL Wayne Larry of B Co, 1-15 Field Artillery who, experiencing his fi rst BOSS trip, said it was great and plans to participate in more BOSS trips in the future.

"Im defi nitely coming back. It was a lot of fun", he said with a big smile on his face.

The BOSS program has been especially successful here in Area I, and the Army has taken notice. They named the Area I BOSS program Best IMCOM Pacifi c BOSS program last year, but CSM Hatfi eld knows theyll do even better this time.

Our next goal is to win the Department of the Army Category B Medium Level Garrison Award, he says with confi dence.

Soldier involvement is the key to that. We need our Soldiers to get involved in our community. They have to be involved in order to really enjoy their one-year tour in Korea. The BOSS program is theirs and I highly encourage all single and unaccompanied Soldiers to take advantage of everything the BOSS program off ers, CSM Hatfi eld concluded.

  • As soon as you walk through the gleaming glass sliding doors of the new Camp Casey Library building the fi rst

things youll notice are the friendly employees and happy visitors in a cool and inviting atmosphere that makes

you want to browse around and stay maybe a little longer than you had planned.

Once inside, what may seem like a relatively small building for a library, a quick fi rst glance paints a bigger

picture of the inner workings of the quaint, yet comforting ambiance the new facility emulates. Visitors can be

seen reading magazines and books, researching or browsing online, while children play and have fun on a giant

stuff ed chair over in the childrens section. These are all things anyone can do at the newly relocated Camp Casey

Library, and the manager there, Tracey Klippert, says thats just fi ne with her.

The library relocation project, months in the making, is part of the larger on-going Downtown Renovation

Project at Camp Casey according to Deputy to the Garrison Commander Raymond Meyers.

Our intent was to make the library more community friendly. Its closer to the school now and the move gave

us an opportunity to refresh the library, Myers says.

And refresh it they did. The layout of the building is totally diff erent from the older, previous facility next to

the Casey bus station. Although the square footage of the new building is in fact smaller, the space has been

reconfi gured and upgraded to accommodate everything Soldiers and Family members have come to expect at

any medium-size installation library. Visitors quickly notice that its a cozy, relaxing place to visit, and they love it.

Klippert says the move, while in the planning stage for many

months, itself took nearly two weeks and plenty of hard work to

    complete.

There were some minor downsizing in the book department, but

they were books that werent being checked out much anymore. On

the plus side, there are some new additions that came along with

the move to compliment the already extensive collection of books,

magazines, online resources and over 9,000 DVDs available for check

    out, Klippert says.

Visitors to the new and improved library can now check out

  • e-readers for weeks at a time that can be loaded with books and magazines, a popular recent addition to the

library collection, according to Klippert, who is always looking for ways to make the library better to serve the

    needs of the Casey-Hovey community.

The renovated building also has a separate computer area and a childrens section fi lled with a large amount of

childrens books, tables for them to use while they read and color, as well as stuff ed chairs and pillows with colors

and animal shapes, all the things kids love.

The feedback has been positive, Klippert says.

Parents and kids think the new childrens section is great. Kids love to go in there and read and jump on the

stuff ed chairs, she says, but they also enjoy the books and other activities too.

The new centralized location has also opened up new opportunities for older children who can now easily

check out books after school. Klippert says they noticed a signifi cant increase with older elementary and junior

high school students, one of the benefi ts of moving closer to the school campus.

Overall the move has exceeded expectations and Klippert and her staff are delighted with the results. The

community continues to show their support for the move and are using the new library and the resources

available more than ever. Klippert says the move was the right thing to do at the right time and its paying off .

All things considered, the community, my staff and I are very happy with our new home, she says with a

smile. We love the new building.

  • During the Christmas season of 1938, a Brooklyn company began producing a penny gum that came in four fl avors: peppermint, spearmint, cinnamon and pepsin. The gum was usually displayed near cash registers in stores, and customers were encouraged to try the product. Even though the Topps Company experimented with several candy bars, it was the gum that generated the profi ts.

In 1947, Topps introduced Bazooka, the Atom Bubble Gum, which sold for 5 cents, each package featuring a miniature comic strip and premiums used as

BooKS RecommendedReading a sales aid for both consumers and retailers. Bazooka Joe and His Gang made their debut in 1953. The gang consisted of Bazooka Joe, Butch (who could lick any guy in the gang except, maybe, Bazooka Joe), Janet Orville or Pesty, Bazooka Joes kid brother, Lil Pats, Joes dog Walkie Talkie, Hungry Herman and Sarge, the neighborhood cop.

Soon, almost every kid in the country was buying the gum and reading the comic strips. To honor the 60th anniversary of these comics, the best strips were borrowed from the collection of Jeff Shepherd and are featured in this nostalgic new book.

There are essays by Talley Morse, son of Bazooka Joe artist and co-creator Wesley Morse, Nancy Morse and Kirk Taylor, along with contributions from Topps insiders. Although they off er context, it is the reproductions of 200 classic Bazooka Joe comics that trigger the memories. Included is the very fi rst series, reproduced in its entirety for the fi rst time in more than 40 years.

This collection has original Bazooka Joe jokes, ads for mail-order merchandise, rare advertising and promo images, and original art from Topps archives. As a special bonus, there are four Bazooka Joe trading cards tucked inside the back cover. The only thing missing is the smell of the pink, sugary gum that became an American phenomenon.

    Dont Let DownYour Guard

Some new reports say segments of the economy are springing back. Others arent so positive. Depending where you read:

Consumer attitudes are better than theyve been in the past five years.

Fewer people say that jobs are hard to get. Home prices are going up because there are

more people trying to buy. Or: People are now feeling

the results of the increased payroll tax and the bigger bite out of paychecks, and retail sales have fallen.

    Consumer confidence is falling.

More people expect the unemployment rate to stay high.

How are things at your house? If things are better for you,

thats great, but dont let down your guard. Take our collective experiences of the past few years, and dont make assumptions that the economy is going to continue to get better, if indeed it is. Here are some suggestions:

Watch the small expenditures, because they add up. If youve gone back to buying morning coffee out, calculate what you spend in a year. Use the public library instead of buying books on Amazon. Decide whether you need all those cable channels. Put a filter on your faucet instead of buying bottled water.

Pay down your credit cards. Once one is paid off, either put that money on another payment or put it in savings every month. After your cards are paid off, save, save, save every dollar you can. Dont cancel the cards, however, because that will lower your credit score.

Dont make credit-card purchases unless you know you can pay off the balance in

three months. Consider whether you can instead save the money

in three months and pay cash instead.

Consider whether service work on your vehicle will keep it running a bit longer, instead of buying a new

    one. Review your tax

deductions to make sure you dont get a big refund at the end

of the year. Getting a refund means youve given an interest-free loan to the

government. Do you hear a note of caution in all this? No

matter what consumer confidence poll you read, you can find one that says the opposite.

Yes, it might give the economy as a whole a boost if millions of people run out and spend, spend, spend. But youre not responsible for the economy. Youre only responsible for your home and family.

And being cautious about spending is still the way to go.

  • If you havent been to Army Community Service in a while, looking to volunteer or are not sure what Army Community Service has to offer, stop by and discover what we can do for you. Army Community Service is hosting a Birthday Open House and information session entitled, Real Life Solutions for Successful Army Living" on Friday, 12 July, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. The event will allow us to showcase our services and will feature a 15 minute ACS Informational Brief followed by birthday cake and ice cream sundaes.

In earlier years there were variations of volunteer lead organizations for the Army Community but due to inconsistencies and turnover of leadership, the programs tend to evaporate. During the early days Army families existed as a closely knit and self-sufficient group. The pioneer Army wife was no stranger to hardship but developed an unbreakable mold of personal sacrifice and consideration, similar with Army wives today. Army wives from the beginning have managed lending closets, thrift shops, and nurseries; raised money to help those in need or emergency situations, taught and trained the inexperienced and provided care and solace to the sick and bereaved through a foundational understanding of Army communities. Army Community Service (ACS) was designed to enhance these volunteer efforts and to provide a flexible structure for a more formal operation of a practical social service system. On 25 July 1965, General Harold K. Johnson, Army Chief of Staff, dispatched a letter to all major commanders announcing approval and establishment of the ACS program. ACS officially began during the Vietnam War when there was a need for substantiated standardized programs.

Throughout the years, ACS has grown and evolved in responsibility and effectiveness. The publication of a revised version of AR 608-1 introduced new avenues of accomplishment of this viable program, and additional programs were formed under the Army Community Service umbrella. The ACS Centers are now required to go through a rigorous inspection in order be considered for Accreditation Certification. The Camp Casey ACS received a full Accreditation with Accommodations in May 2012.

The Army Community Services mission is to deliver comprehensive programs and services supporting life-long learning empowering individuals, Soldiers, Families, and units enhancing their personal growth and professional development. Army Community Service is an empowered team that provides professional, coordinated, and responsive a
