The Francis Marion University softball teamis set to open the 2014 season Tuesdayafternoon (Feb. 4) with a doubleheaderagainst Belmont Abbey College at theFMU Softball Stadium. First pitch is setfor 3 p.m.

Admission for the twinbill will be $8 foradults and $5 for students. FMU studentswill be admitted free with identification andappropriate Swamp Fox Club passes willbe honored.

The Patriots return eight letterwinners, in-cluding four position starters, the desig-nated hitter, and two pitchers, from the2013 squad that finished 25-26.“I think the key for this season is that our

pitchers have to stay on top,” said headcoach Stacey Vallee. “Taylor (Luff) andKatie (Carnes) have been working togetheras a pitching staff, and our hitters need tocome through behind them. Pitching willbe our biggest strength based off pastexperience. Hitting and defense may bejust as strong this year, but I know thatour pitching will be solid.”

In the circle, the Patriots will be led byLuff, a senior right-hander who was an All-Region and All-Peach Belt Conferenceselection last season. She finished with a14-14 record, while compiling a 1.58earned run average with 251 strikeouts, aPatriots’ single-season record. Also return-ing for the Patriots will be Carnes, a juniorrighty who missed the majority of the 2013season with a medical condition. Carneswas 5-1 in 11 appearances last year witha 1.40 ERA and 25 strikeouts.

“Taylor is coming off a big year with theaccolades and the strikeout record. Sheis a very hardworking player and she wantsto win, especially in her senior year. Shehas the ability to lead the team, and herdevelopment has gone extremely well.

“Katie is coming off an injury, but we arestill working with her development, and shehas responded nicely.”

“We have two junior transfers that will dovery well for us this year in Ashley andShelby,” Vallee said. “Both of them hadgood careers at the junior college level, and we are expecting that to carry overhere for us. Shelby will do great at third. She has been called the vacuum on de-fense, and all the girls have been im-pressed with her skills. Burney is a goodfirst baseman that brings a lot of inten-sity on the field.

“We also have a freshman (DanielleMyers) who we will look to do a good jobbehind the plate, and on the other sideas a hitter. She has a small frame, buthas a lot of pop in her bat. All of the otherfreshmen are also surprising us each dayin practice and during scrimmages.”

Francis Marion’s 52-game slate includes11 home doubleheaders and two in-sea-son tournaments on the road in Pem-broke, N.C., and Saint Leo, Fla. ThePatriots will play 22 of their first 30 gameson the road, before finishing the seasonwith 14 of the final 22 games at home.Francis Marion will also serve as the hostfor the 2014 Peach Belt Conference Tour-nament, April 18-19 on the FMU cam-pus.

“We are excited about getting back outon the field again. Hopefully the weatherstarts cooperating, and we get to getback out and play in this awesome facil-ity that we have. I know it feels like it’sbeen here for a while, but it’s only thesecond year. It’s very exciting to play andwork at a place like this.”

The Patriots were picked to finish sixthin the race for the 2014 PBC Champion-ship according to the annual pre-seasoncoaches poll.
