The Francis Marion University softballteam was to have opened its 2016campaign on Thursday, Feb. 4, with adoubleheader at North GreenvilleUniversity in Tigerville, S.C., but MotherNature demanded that twinbill bepostponed to a later date.

Therefore, the Patriots will play theirseason and home opener as part ofHomecoming 2016 festivities on Satur-day, Feb. 6, when Francis Marionentertains Southern Wesleyan Univer-sity for a twinbill at 2 p.m. at the FMUSoftball Stadium.

FMU head coach Stacey Vallee,entering her 12th season on the Patriotbench, welcomes back 10 letterwinners,including six position starters and onestart-ing pitcher, from her 2015 squadthat finished 25-22 and tied for sixth inthe PBC standings.

Leading the returnees are pair of All-Conference performers: senior utilityplayer Shannan Lopez and junioroutfielder Briana Barzola. Lopezstarted at four different positions in 2015and led the Patriots in batting (.393),doubles (16), home runs (7), runsbatted in (44), and slugging percentage(.662). Barzola was second on thesquad in hitting with a .364 average,scored 25 runs, and stole six bases.In addition to Barzola, the other twostarting outfielders from 2015 alsoreturn in junior Mikala Barnhart (.355,34 runs, 14-of-14 stolen bases) andsophomore Tori Gaskins (.241, 13RBIs).

Also returning among the starters aresenior shortstop Sharee Blomquist(.233) and senior first baseman andright-handed pitcher Shelby Kelley (.169avg). In the circle, Kelley posted a 5-7pitching record and tied the FMU single-season record for saves with three.

Joining Kelley on the pitching staff willbe junior lefty Kaylee Childers (transferfrom Lake Land College in Illinois),sophomore righty Samantha Wrobleski(transfer from Division III BrandeisUniversity), and freshman southpawJessica Thompson (Pedricktown, NJ).

Other newcomers include freshmanshortstop Taylor Johnson (San Diego,CA), freshman outfielder Shelby Cox(Galivants Ferry, SC), junior infielderKellie Howard (Georgetown, SC),freshman utility player Chelsea Welty(St. Helena, SC), and junior infielderTaylor Brunson (Shawnee, KS).

Two additional players also return:senior infielder Kristen English andjunior utility player Danielle Myers(.224).

“I am happy with our squad as weprepare to open the season,” Valleesaid. “Our hitting should be betterthan last season. We have beenattacking good pitches in our scrim-mages, and that is always a goodsign. As long as our pitchers can hittheir spots, we should be successful.”Last season, FMU hit .275 as a team,while allowing opponents to hit .275.Vallee pointed to Kelley and

Wroblewski as the workhorses whowill should the majority of innings inthe pitching circle.

Behind the plate, Vallee has strengthin numbers. Returnees (senior) TaylorBarrineau, (senior) Mykah Nevin, andLopez have combined to start 89contests over the past three seasons.Welty could also see time catching aswell as at first base.

(Barzola) was All-Conference andanother (Barnhart) was our team mostvaluable player.”

Vallee is also excited about whatJohnson can bring to the table as faras defense up the middle, while shesays Brunson will be the likely starterat second base. The likely choice atthe hot corner will be either Blomquist,Howard, Welty, or Lopez.

At the plate, the coach is looking forChilders and Welty to assist Lopezwith power numbers in the middle ofthe line-up.

FMU was picked to finish eighth in the2016 Peach Belt Conference pre-season coaches’ poll.

The Patriots’ 56-game slate includes14 home doubleheaders and an in-season tournament hosted by thePatriots on Feb. 19-21. Regarding theopening day opponent, FMU and NorthGreenville have split four previousmeetings, including a doubleheader inFlorence last season.

Georgia College in Milledgeville, Ga.,will serve as the host for the PBCTournament on April 22-23.

In 37 seasons, the Patriot programowns a 1053-678-4 all-time record,including seven national tournamentappearances.

Stacey Vallee is entering her12th season as head coachfor the Patriot women's soft-ball program. She owns a332-214-1 record in 11 sea-sons on the FMU bench, in-cluding six 30-win campaignsand two NCAA Tournamentappearances. Vallee also serves as

Francis Marion's SeniorWomen's Administrator. She served a two-year stint on theNFCA Division II Top 25 poll committee from 2013 to 2014,and previously served as a committee member for four yearsfrom 2005 to 2009.

This past year, FMU registered a 25-22 mark and tiedfor sixth during the Peach Belt Conference regular season.

In 2014, the Patriots posted a 23-28 record and tiedfor seventh in the PBC standings. Ten of the defeats were byone run. In 2013, the first full season in the state-of-the-artFMU Softball Stadium, the Patriots posted a 25-26 mark. Nineof the team's losses were by one run, and the squad compileda 3-4 record against nationally ranked opponents.

In 2012, Francis Marion registered a 31-20 mark, theprogram’s twelfth 30-win campaign in the previous 15 sea-sons. Two Patriots earned All-Conference recognition, threewere named to the PBC All-Academic Team, four garneredNFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete recognitionke, and two wereselected to the Capital One Academic All-District III Team.

Francis Marion compiled a 36-16 record in 2010 andearned the program’s second NCAA Division II National Tour-nament invitation in three seasons. The Patriots advanced tothe championship game of both the Peach Belt ConferenceTournament and the NCAA Dahlonega Southeast Regional.The Patriots ranked 45th in Division II in winning percentage(.692), 57th in fielding percentage (.962), 67th in earned runaverage (2.63), 77th in scoring (5.08 runs per game), and 83rdin batting average (.301).

In 2009, FMU ended the season with a 32-19 record,and narrowly missed earning an at-large bid to the NCAATournament. The Patriots were ranked in four cartegories inthe final 2009 Division II statistical report: 33rd in earned runaverage (1.97), 63rd in winning percentage (.627), 81st in bat-ting average (.293), and 98th in scoring (4.67 runs per game).

In 2008, Vallee guided the Patriots to their most suc-cessful season since the program moved from NAIA affiliationto NCAA Division II membership. Francis Marion ended theseason ranked fifth in the final NFCA Top 25 poll with a 39-16record, the third-highest win total in team history. The Patri-

ots earned their first-ever bid to the NCAA Division II nationaltournament, won the South Atlantic Regional, and advancedto the Division II national finals (Elite Eight) in Houston, Texas.The season also featured the program's first-ever appearanceon national television (CBS College Sports).

In 2007, she directed FMU to a 34-16 record and atie for fifth-place in the Peach Belt Conference regular-seasonstandings. For a third time in three years under her guid-ance, the Patriots narrowly missed earning a bid to the Divi-sion II Tournament. The Patriots ended the 2006 year with a27-16 record, was sixth during the PBC regular season, andwas ranked eighth in the South Atlantic Region poll.

During a successful first season (2005) at FMU, sheguided the Patriots to a 36-14 record and a fifth-place finishduring the Peach Belt regular season. The 36 wins was atthat time the fourth-most in the program's history. Six of thePatriots' 10 losses were by one run. The 2005 team spentthree weeks ranked in the NFCA Top 25 poll, reaching as highas the 10th position. Francis Marion was ranked in the top 20nationally for three statistical categories at the end of theseason, and was 27th in won-loss percentage.

Her 10 FMU teams have produced 23 All-Conferenceselections, 12 All-Region selections, two NFCA All-Americaselections, and 59 NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes. Her2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 squads each earned All-Academic Team honors from the NFCA. In 2007 the Patriotsranked 10th among Division II programs (and 22nd among allfour-year schools) with a 3.470 cumulative grade-point aver-age; in 2008 ranked 14th in Division II with a 3.36 GPA, and in2009 ranked 24th in Division II with a 3.329 GPA.

Vallee came to Francis Marion in 2004 from SaintLeo University, a member of the NCAA Division II SunshineState Conference, where she spent four seasons as an as-sistant coach. The Lions posted a 135-88 mark during thosefour years, including a national tournament appearance in 2002.She also served as the university's assistant trainer and taughtas an instructor during the 2003-04 year, and worked as anassistant strength and conditioning coach for two seasons.

A native of St. Louis, Mo., Vallee was as an assistantcoach at Florissant Valley Community College during the fallof 2000, after having served as player/head coach of thePulheim Gophers during the spring and summer of 2000.

A 1999 graduate of Barry University with a B.S. de-gree in sports medicine and athletic training, she was a four-year starter at third base. She helped lead the Buccaneers tothe NCAA Division II national tournament each of her four years,including a second-place finish in 1998. She ended her ca-reer third on the school's games played list.

She was married during the summer of 2006, andshe gave birth to her first child (Ryker) during the 2008 sea-son. She and her husband Greg have sinced added a daugh-ter (Moxie). Vallee is a member of the National FastpitchCoaches Association, the National Strength and ConditioningAssociation, the National Council on Strength and Fitness,and the National Athletic Trainers Association. She is a certi-fied strength and conditioning specialist, a certified personaltrainer, and a certified athletic trainer. She was as a panelmember at the third-annual Women in Athletics Seminar,hosted by the PBC in Augusta, Ga., on Sept. 21, 2010.

Molly Walton enters her first year as assistant coach for the Francis Marion University softballprogram.

Walton is a 2015 graduate of GRU Augusta where she attained her B.S. in kinesiology exercise andsports science degree.

She brings experience as both a player and a coach to the program after her four-year career at GRUAugusta.

For the Lady Jaguars on the field, Walton was a four-year starter and was one of the top hitters onthe team each year. In her senior year, she batted .343 with a home run and 18 RBIs. She batted.287 and drove in 16 runs during her sophomore year in 2013.

From the summer of 2012 to summer 2015, Walton served as the assistant coach for the West JeffLady Lobos 10-and-under softball team. The Morrison, Colo., native also served as an assistant forthe Jennie Finch softball camp held in Augusta, Ga., in November 2012.

Savanah Webster

Savanah Webster begins her first season as an assistant coach with the Francis Marion Universitysoftball program. The Las Vegas, Nev., native will also serve as the university's Cheerleading Advi-sor.

Webster earned her undergraduate degree in business administration from Marshall University in2014. She played two seasons for the Thundering Herd, including batting .326 with seven home runsand 32 runs batted in as a senior. During her junior campaign, she hit .250 with four homers and 13RBIs, while being named to the Conference-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Prior to attending Marshall, Webster spent two years at Salt Lake Community College, where shewas a two-time All-American (once first team and once second team). Both years, SLCC finished asthe national runner at the NJCAA national tournament. As a freshman, she batted .503 and regis-tered 13 homers with 53 RBIs.

She spent this past spring as a student assistant at Marshall, with the Thundering Herd posting a35-15 record.

Webster has past experience as an assist with the Las Vegas Rage 18U squad and as a privatesoftball instructor. She has taken part in the Sweet Heart Clinic for children ages 8-to-12, andworked with Monica Abbott and Leah O'Brien Amico at Marshall sponsored clinics.

merly the Peach Belt Athletic Conference). Other PBC

row, Ga.), Columbus State University (Columbus, Ga.),

wood, S.C.), University of Montevallo (Montevallo, Ala.),

College. Formed in December 1989 and headquar-

tered in Augusta, Ga., the PBC conducts champion-

FMU Softball StadiumWith the opening of the R. Gerald Griffin Athletic Complex in 2012, the Francis Marion University softballprogram moved to the new FMU Softball Stadium.

The field is part of the $11.1 million west campus athletic complex that also includes a lake, fieldhouse,baseball stadium, and soccer stadium. The street address for the complex (GPS) is 4700 East Pal-metto Street, Florence, SC 29506.

The softball facility consists of 300 seats with grass berm seating for 500 more spectators, concessionarea, restrooms, and pressbox. Batting cages are located just beyond the home bullpen down the leftfield line.

The field dimensions are 190 feet down each line, 213 feet to the power alleys, and 220 feet to centercenter. Bullpens are located down each foul line, and the first phase of the fieldhouse is locatedadjancent to the right field side of the baseball field.

One main ticket office -- on the east side -- serves the entire complex.

2015 - Five Patriots earned NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete honors: OF Briana Barzola (2nd time), OF Tori Gaskins, RHPKatie Carnes, LHP Kaitlin Munda, and 1B Madison Lowe-Gardner. Two players were selected to the PBC All-Conference Team:UT Shannan Lopez (1st Team) and Barzola (2nd Team). Barzola was also named to the PBC All-Academic Team. Gaskins wasnamed the PBC Freshman of the Week for the week of April 6-12. Carnes was named the PBC Pitcher of the Week for March 2-8, after tossing her second career no-hitter on March 7 against Georgia Southwestern.2014 - FMU hosted the 2014 Peach Belt Conference Tournament at the FMU Softball Stadium. Two players earned NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete honors: OF Olivia Zielinski and OF Briana Barzola. All-Region squad......Five Patriots were named to the 2009 Peach Belt Conference Softball All-Academic Team.and four Patriots were selected to the 2009 All-Peach Belt Conference Team.2008 - The Patriots were ranked fifth in the final NFCA Division II Top 25 poll, the highest ranking for the Patriot program since theschool moved to NCAA affiliation in 1992. FMU enjoyed its most successful season in 20 years posting a 39-16 record, the third-highest win total in team history. The Patriots earned their first-ever bid to the NCAA Division II national tournament, won theSouth Atlantic Regional, and advanced to the Division II national finals (Elite Eight) in Houston, Texas. FMU played one of thetougher schedules in the country with seven contests against nationally ranked opponents and nearly half its games (27) againstsquads that made the national tournament. Prior to its breakthrough 2008 campaign, the squad had narrowly missed out onearning a bid to the NCAA Tournament for four straight years. The program’s highest national ranking occurred in 1988 whenFrancis Marion was ranked No. 1 in the pre-season NAIA poll.
