News from the Johansen International Competition and AvantiJudy Silverman and Nan Cooper

Lara Boschkor, 17 year-old First Place Violin winner of the 2015 Johansen International Com-petition, will be performing the Tschaikovsky Violin Concerto in D major with the Avanti

Orchestra under the baton of maestro Pablo Saelzer on Friday, September 30, 2016 at 8 pm at the Montgomery College Cultural Arts Center, 7995 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD.

Also on the program will be Tschaikovsky’s Alla tedesca - a movement from his third symphony — and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9. The concert is free and open to the public. For directions and information about the abundant free parking, go to: http://mcblogs.montgomerycollege.edu/cac/about-us/directions-parking/.

After winning the Johansen International Competition First Prize for Violin in March 2015, Lara was an active participant in the Kronberg Academy’s Violin Masterclasses with Donald Wei-lerstein and was awarded the Prince of Hesse Prize. Since October 2015 Lara has been studying as a Young Soloist in Kronberg Academy’s precollege program. This gifted young musician is being supported by the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben and the Bruno Frey Stiftung and was also award-ed the Peter Ustinov Foundation scholarship in 2015.

Announcing a New Chamber Music Network Gail MacColl, Coordinator

The experiment we called Strings at Home is now the Chamber Music Network!  The Network

provides opportunities for Club musicians in any mem-bership category to meet other players at chamber music sessions in members’ homes. String players form its core, but wind and brass players, pianists and singers are welcome to participate as well. I set up the sessions—proposed by members or at my own initiative. Net-work members receive information about each session (ensemble required, dates, times, places) via email from the easy-to-use Meeting Wizard.  Members click on either “available” or “unavailable” for each date.  When the event is fully staffed, I confirm the session and notify participants.  If a session is over-subscribed, I include newcomers and those for whom only that date will do, and seek an alternate date for players who cannot be accommodated.

Sessions held during the summer at my house have been very successful.  However, given the many cellists who participate, we need more violinists and violists—and more host homes, including homes with a piano.  To sign up, offer a home, or learn more, please contact me at [email protected] or 202 966-3325.

Part Time Executive Assistant Wanted

We are looking for a responsible person to assist with various FMMC duties, including, but not limited to:  communication and co-ordination with Board members and Committee

Chairs; scheduling tasks; picking up and forwarding weekly mail (DC office); answering vari-ous correspondence; distributing membership and other public relations materials; responding to queries; and acting as liaison for special events.

Minimum of 40 hours per month. $25 per hour.  If interested, kindly email qualifications to:  [email protected]

FMMC Audition Chair SoughtDue to the unexpected resignation of our First Vice President/Auditions, the Club is seeking a volunteer to take on this important job. Jeffery Beaudry, our prior Auditions Chair, will help educate his replacement on the responsibilities of this position. This opening offers an opportunity to manage one of the Club’s most important functions and to be a member of the FMMC’s Board of Governors. Interested persons should contact Yvonne Sabine, Nominating Committee Chair, at [email protected] or 703-356-5408.

From the Foundation DirectorLeslie Luxemburg

Welcome to a new and exciting season. One of the most stimulating aspects of working with the Foun-

dation is the opportunity to start fresh each fall planning a new competition that features a different discipline. This year, we are working towards the 2017 Washington Inter-national Competition for Piano that will occur on June 3 & 4 of 2017. Join us in welcoming a strong team, featuring Chen-Li Tzeng as competition chair, and pianists Lydia Frumkin and Grace McFarlane as Foundation Trustees. I feel especially grateful to have their dedication and skill supporting our existing Board members.

I would be remiss if I failed to mention two of our most valuable participants who will not be with us as of September. Suzanne Richard-son has chaired the WIC the past two years with devotion, extreme competence, and a steady hand at handling the application process. Alice Berman has served as executive administrator of the Johansen International Competition for the past thirteen years. Her thorough attention to every detail of the three year competition cycle combined with a sincere dedication to, and affection for, all the participating young string players, have enabled us to adhere faithfully to Mrs. Johansen’s principals and values. We are confident that Harriet Kaplan will be a worthy successor in running the JIC.

We will also miss our devoted Board members Connie Milner, Missy Goldberg and Christina Hanna, but expect to have them join us at the exciting concerts coming up over the next several months.
