Swimming

Stone Age paintings in Egypt seem to show human figures swimming; as does a Nagoda bas-relief dating back to 3000

BC. Obviously, we’ve been swimming since pre-history, but swimming as a competitive sport probably originated in the early 1800s in Europe. In the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, swimmers competed in the choppy waters of the Mediterranean Sea. A 100-metre pool was built for the Games of 1908. Swimming is now a star Olympic event.

Bangalore has been in the forefront of Indian swimming. Our own Shikha Tandon, Rehan Poncha and Aaron D’Souza are among the best in the country. Incidentally, they have been recipients of the Brigade Group-Rotary Bangalore Midtown Young Achiever Awards.

Governing body: The Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) is the world governing body for aquatic sports: pool swimming, diving, water polo, synchronised swimming, open water swimming and master’s swimming. FINA has 201 member countries.

Common strokes in swimming: Front Crawl, Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Freestyle, Snorkeling, Sidestroke, Fin Swimming, Dog-paddling, Combat Stroke and Individual Medley.

Some major tourna-ments: Olympic Games,

Commonwealth Games, European Championships and the World Swimming Championships.

Some leading swimmers: Michael Phelps, Matthew Nicholas Biondi, Ian James Thorpe, Jennifer Elisabeth Thompson. India: Bula Chowdhury, Khazan Singh, Mihir Sen.

Trivia: The Orthlieb Pool in Casablanca, Morocco, is the world’s largest swimming pool, measuring 8.9 acres (1,574’ l x 246’ w). It is filled with salt water.

Archery

The use of sharp projectiles as weapons dates back to prehistory; the bow seems to have been invented by about 9000-8000 BC. Archery features in the mythologies of many cultures. Archery feats and

tournaments played a crucial role in both the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Until the invention of gunpowder, archery was an important military and hunting skill in many civiliza-tions. Archery first appeared as a sport in the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris,

but was dropped in 1920 due to lack of uniform rules. With the implementation of standardised rules, Archery reappeared at the Munich Games in 1972.

Governing bodies: The Federation Internationale de Tir a l’Arc (FITA) was founded in 1931 in Switzerland. The International Crossbow-shooting Union, founded in Germany in 1956, is the world governing body for crossbow target shooting. There are 137 member associations.

Types of competitive archery: Target, 3D, Clout, Crossbow, Flight, Ski, Popinjay, Field, Beursault Field, Hunter and Animal rounds.

Some major tournaments: Olympics, Commonwealth Games, Target World Championships, FITA World Outdoor Target Archery Championships.

Some leading players: Hubert Van Innis, Kim Su-Nyeong, Julien Brulé. India: Limba Ram, Satyadev Prasad, Tarundeep Rai, Jayant Talukdar and Dola Banerjee.

Trivia: Archery (Dha) is the national sport of Bhutan. Competitions feature two teams in traditional dress shooting at small wooden targets placed 140 m apart (the Olympic standard is 50 m).

Billiards

Traditionally, ‘billiards’ has been used to describe a variety of ‘cue sports’—games played on a billiard table with cue sticks. However, the specific games referred to depend on country, dialect and context. Dating back to the 15th century, table billiards soon became extremely popular with French and British nobility and gentry. It is likely that it came to America with Dutch and English settlers.

The different types of billiards: Carom or French billiards (includes balkline and straight rail, cushion caroms, three-cushion billiards and artistic billiards); Pool (includes eight-ball, nine-ball, straight pool, one-pocket and bank pool); Snooker; a variety of obscure games that make use of obstacles and targets, and table-top games played with disks instead of balls.

Governing body: The World Confederation of Billiard Sports is the international umbrella organisation encom-passing the major cue sports (billiards-type games), includ-ing carom billiards, pool games of several varieties, and snooker. Founded in 1992, it now has 148 affiliated national federations.

Some major tournaments: Commonwealth Games, World Pool Masters. A ‘billiards’ category—which covers pool, snooker and carom—featured in the 2005 World Games, Germany. The 2006

Asian Games also saw the introduction of a ‘cue sports’ category. Some leading players: Michael Phelan, Ralph “The Showman”

Greenleaf, Eddie Taylor. India: Wilson Jones, Michael Ferreira, Geet Sethi, Pankaj Advani.

Trivia: Prof. Harvey C. Lehman, of Ohio University, Athens, using over 10,000 players as subjects, discovered that billiards champions have the highest average age of any sport considered. The peak age of a billiards master is 34.35; the average age of the people who set records in billiards is 35.67. (Pankaj Advani is just 24!)

Billiards could be called a distant relative of croquet or golf—

since all cue games are believed to have evolved from outdoor

stick-and-ball lawn games (later named ground billiards).

Chess

Chess is believed to have originated in India, during the reign of the Gupta dynasty. With expanding trade routes, the popularity of chess soon spread around the world—the game reached

Western Europe and Russia by at least three routes, the earliest having been in the 9th century.

Governing bodies: The Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) or World Chess Federation connects the various national chess federations around the world and acts as the governing body for international chess competitions. FIDE was founded in Paris in 1924 and now has 158 national associations.

Titles and rankings: Grandmaster (GM), International Master (IM), FIDE Master (FM), Candidate Master (CM) and Woman Grandmaster (WGM).

Some major tournaments: FIDE Grand Prix Series, World Chess Championship, World Indivi-dual School Championship, World Junior Chess Championship, World Blitz Championship, World Senior Championship, World Chess Olympiad.

Some leading players: Garry Kasparov, Robert “Bobby” Fischer, Boris Spassky, Judit Polgar, Vladamir Kramnik, Anatoly Karpov. India: Viswanathan Anand, Humpy Koneru, Dibyendu Barua, P. Harikrishna.

Trivia: In India, from the early 6th century, it has been known as ‘chaturanga’ (Shatranj in Hindi), a Sanskrit word meaning ‘four divisions’, standing for the divisions of the military: infantry, cavalry, elephants and chariotry. These early divisions slowly evolved into the chess pieces we are familiar with today: rook, pawn, knight and bishop.

Basketball

Basketball is the invention of Dr James Naismith, a professor and instructor of physical education in Massachusetts, USA. Looking

for an indoor game to keep his students fit and occupied during the winter of 1891, he invented one based on rules from a children’s game ‘Duck on a Rock’. He called it Basket Ball. Senda Berenson, a physical education

teacher at Smith College, modified Naismith’s rules for women in 1892.

Governing body: (Fédération

Internationale de Basketball Amateur), is the world governing body for basketball. Established in 1989 and headquartered in Geneva, it now has 214 member federations.

Some major tournaments:World Championship for Women, EuroLeague Basketball, European Basketball Championships (EuroBasket), NBA Playoffs, NBA

Championship.Variations of the game: Wheelchair basketball, Water basketball,

Beach basketball, Dunkball, Slamball, Streetball, Unicycle basketball, Deaf basketball and Bankshot basketball.

Some leading players: Michael Jeffery Jordon, Kareem Abdul Jabber, Earvin “Magic” Johnson Jr, Wilt Chamberlain, Kobe Bryant, Karl Malone.

Trivia:was literally that: it was a ‘peach basket’ that retained its bottom, so that balls had to be retrieved manually. In 1906, peach baskets were replaced by metal hoops with backboards (the backboard was added because the audience who watched the game from the balcony often created chaos by reaching for the ball).

Tennis

Games of racket and ball (known as Real Tennis in Great Britain, Royal Tennis in Australia and Court Tennis in the United States) originated from a 12th and 13th century

French handball game called Jeu de Paume or Game of the Palm. Tennis, as we know it today, is termed Lawn Tennis and originated in the United Kingdom in the late 19th century. The oldest surviving tennis court in Great Britain is the Royal Tennis Court at Hampton Court Palace, built by King Henry VIII in 1529.

Other forms of tennis: Paddle tennis, Soft tennis, Squash tennis, Deck tennis, Beach tennis, Wheelchair tennis and Turbo tennis.

Governing body: The International Tennis Federation, established in France in 1913, is the governing body of world tennis. It is made up of 205 national tennis associations.

Some major tournaments: The Grand Slam Tournaments (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open); ATP World Tour Masters, Olympic Games.

Some leading players: Rod Laver, Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Serena Williams. India: Vijay Amritraj, Ramanathan Krishnan, Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, Ramesh Krishnan, Sania Mirza.

Trivia: Why is tennis scored the way it is? One theory is that the number 60 was considered auspicious in medieval times, so the points were set at 15, 30, 45 (later changed to 40) and 60. Yet another theory has it that, as there was usually a clock at the end of the tennis court, scoring was based on quarter hours.

Soccer

Soccer, alterna-tively known as football or asso-ciation football, is the most popular form of football. The game has its roots in the traditional football games played all over Europe, par t icular ly in medieval England. Soccer, as we know it today,

began with the formation of the Football Association in London in 1863. The Association standardised the rules of the game, for till then different clubs followed their individual codes and matches took place only after rules of play were agreed upon.

Governing body: The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is the international governing body of soccer, with 208 member associations.

Some major tournaments: The FIFA World Cup (with an audience double that of the Summer Olympics!), the European Championship, South America’s Copa América (CONMEBOL), African Cup of Nations (ANC), FIFA Confederations Cup. India: Durand Cup, Federation Cup, IFA Shield, Subroto Cup, Nehru Cup International Football Tournament, Santosh Trophy.

Some leadings players: Pele, Diego Maradona, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, David Beckham. India: Baichung Bhutia.

Trivia: The name ‘soccer’ was originally a slang abbreviation of the word ‘association’. Of the 45 national FIFA affiliates in which English is an official or primary language, only three (Canada, Samoa and the United States) actually use ‘soccer’ in their organisations’ official names.

Golf

The origin of golf has been variously attributed to the Roman game of Paganica (1st century BC); the Chinese game of Chuiwan (8

to 14 century); and several other games played in England, France, Persia and Netherlands. It is most likely that golf originated in Scotland around the 12th century, with shepherds knocking stones into rabbit holes. That site is the location of golf’s most venerated club: the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.

Governing bodies: The R&A is the ruling authority of golf everywhere. In United States and Mexico, the US Golf Association (USGA) is the governing body of golf. The International Federation of PGA tours is the trade body of the main men’s professional golf tours. There are six full members.

Forms of golf: Match play, Stroke play, Skins, Stableford, Team play (Foursome, Four-ball, Scramble, Greensome, Shotgun).

Some major championships and tours: Men’s: The Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, PGA, Japan Golf Tour, Asian Tour, PGA, European Tours. Women’s: LPGA Tour, U.S., (Kraft Nabisco Championship, LPGA Championship, U.S. Women’s Open and the Women’s British Open), Ladies European Tour, Evian Masters.

Famous golf courses: Augusta National, US; Pebble Beach, US; Oakmont, US; St Andrews, Scotland, UK; Sunningdale, UK; Wentworth, UK.

Cricket

C r i c k e t dates back to the 16th century and the reign of the Tudors. By the 18th c e n t u r y , cricket had

become the national sport of England and was spread further and further afield—quite literally—with each colonial conquest.

Early institutions: The Hambledon Club was founded in the 1760s and, for the next 20 years until the formation of MCC and the opening of Lord’s Old Ground in 1787, was both the game’s greatest club and its focal point. MCC became the sport’s premier club and the custodian of the Laws of Cricket.

Governing bodies: The International Cricket Council (ICC) is the international governing body of cricket. Cricket is played in over 100 countries worldwide, the main ‘cricketing countries’ being Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe.

Main types of matches: A limit of 20 overs per side (Twenty20) to a game played over 5 days (Test cricket).

Some major tournaments: Test cricket: The Ashes, The Wisden Trophy (England and West Indies), Frank Worrell Trophy (Australia and West Indies). National cricket: County Championship (England), Ranji Trophy (India), Plunket Shield (New Zealand), Currie Cup (South Africa), Shell Shield (West Indies). Limited ‘One day’ Overs: The Cricket World Cup.

Some leading players: Donald Bradman, Garfield Sobers, Viv Richards, Brian Lara, Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne, Wasim Akram. India: Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble.

Trivia: Bowling evolved around 1760 when bowlers began to pitch the ball instead of rolling or skimming it towards the batsman. This caused a revolution in bat design because, to deal with the bouncing ball, it was necessary to introduce the modern straight bat in place of the old ‘hockey stick’ shape.

Athletics

Organised athletics date back to the ancient Olympic Games from 776 BC. The tradition continued with the Celts, Teutons and Goths participating in athletic contests. Between 1796-

Main events: Running (Sprints, Middle and Long Distance), Race-walking, Relays, Jumps (High Jump, Long Jump, Hurdles, Pole Vault), Throws (Javelin, Discus, Shot Put, Hammer), Multiple-Event Competitions including Pentathlon, Heptathlon and Decathlon.

Governing body: The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), founded in 1912, is the international governing body for the sport of athletics. It has 212 member federations.

Some major tournaments: Olympic Games, IAAF Outdoor World Championships, European Championships, Pan-American Games, Commonwealth Games (being cond-ucted in Delhi in Oct. 2010).

Trivia: The marathon was originally conceived as an 1896

Olympic race to commemmorate the run of a soldier in 490 B.C. Pheidippides ran from a battlefield at the town of Marathon, Greece, to Athens to deliver a message. Legend has it that after delivering the momentous message “Niki!” (“victory”), Pheidippides collapsed and died.

BadmintonA game resembling badminton was played in China (500 BC) and,

as a children’s game, in ancient G r e e c e a n d Egypt. Expanding t r a d e r o u t e s brought the game to India. As it seems to have been extremely popular in the garrison town of Poona, it acquired the name Poonai.

British troops stationed in India refined the game to its now familiar avatar and brought it to England in the 1860s.

Governing body: The Badminton World Federation (BWF) is a 160-member association that governs international badminton and develops the sport globally.

Main types of matches: Doubles, Singles, Mixed Doubles, Left- handed Singles, Left-handed / Right-handed Doubles Pair.

Some major tournaments: Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, BWF World Championships, BWF Super Series, Thomas Cup, Uber Cup (Women), Sudirman Cup, Grand Prix Gold, Grand Prix.

Records: Men’s Doubles player Tan Boon Heong of Malaysia set the official world smash record of 421km/h in the Japan Open 2009.

S o m e l e a d i n g players: David G. Freeman, Rudy Hartono, Luluk Hadiyanto, Lin Dan, Taufik Hidayat, Ji Xinpeng, Poul-Erik Høyer Larsen, Zhang Ning, Bang Soo-hyun. India: Prakash Padukone, Aparna Popat, Pullela Gopichand, Chetan Anand, Sania Nehwal.

Trivia: Badminton appears to have got its name in 1873, when it was played at a party in Gloucestershire, England. The party was hosted by the Duke of Beaufort, at his country estate—known as Badminton House.

Hockey

Hockey is one the oldest known sports; depictions of games played with a ball and cur ve d s t ick s have been found in 4000-year-old drawings from Egypt. Variations of hockey have

been played by many civilizations, but modern field hockey originated in 19th century Britain. British servicemen then took the game with them to their various colonies. (The first hockey clubs in India were formed in Calcutta, in 1885.) Women’s hockey developed separately from men’s. The International Rules Board was founded in 1895.

Types of hockey: Field hockey, Ice hockey, Roller hockey (Inline and Quad) and Street hockey.

Governing body: In 1924, the International Hockey Federation was founded in Paris. It is hockey’s global governing body and has 127 member federations, spread across five continents.

Some major tournaments: Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Pan American Games, Asian Games, World Cup, Junior World Cup, Champions Challenge, Champions Challenge II, Champions Trophy.

Some leading players: Wasim Ahmad, Sohail Abbas, T. Taekema, Tuen De Noijer, Jamie Dwyer. India: Ajit Pal Singh, Balbir Singh Sr, Dhanraj Pillay, Dhyan “Chand”, Gagan Ajit Singh, K.D. Singh Babu, Leslie Claudius, Mohammed Shahid, Udham Singh.

Trivia: The Teddington cricket club in England is credited with developing hockey into its modern form in 1871. Club members felt the need for winter exercise, but weren’t keen on the obvious choice: football. So they created a ‘stick’ game, broadly based on the rules of football and played on the smooth outfield of their cricket pitch. They used a cricket ball for its smooth and predictable motion.
