Where does the time go? January 2020 is just

around the corner. I hope you all had a

wonderful Christmas holiday with family and

friends.

January brings all the New Year’s resolutions which for me will

definitely include more quilting and hopefully getting to complete

many of my projects that I have been putting off this past year.

Our Flying Geese Quilters Guild will be celebrating its 35th

birthday in March. Our guild began with a small group of quilters

in 1985 and now here we are celebrating with over 225 members

and still going strong. In 2020 we will continue having great

speakers and workshops. The Calendar Girls Friendship Group,

along with many volunteers from our guild, will present the semi-

annual Auction on May 16th. Another great event that will be

taking place in October is our semi-annual Ultimate Challenge

organized this year by Pam Hadfield and Trudy Cleveland. The

theme they have chosen is “Winter Wonderland”.

In February 2020 I will be celebrating 25 years with our guild and

I’m looking forward to another great year with the Flying Geese

Quilters Guild.

Coming Attractions

January 13, 2020 — Mel Beach

Lecture: Challenge Yourself

Start the new year with inspiration on how to design your challenge

quilt. Discover the world of Quilt Challenges and the many

opportunities awaiting you (and your quilts!) Join Mel as she recounts

her adventures (including a few misadventures) while participating in

Quilt Challenges at both the local and national/international level. She

hopes to inspire you by sharing her quilts and their stories, along with

tips/tricks that she hopes will inspire and encourage you to enter your

own quilts, regardless of style or level of experience/skill!

Mel will present a slide show followed by trunk show of her challenge

quilts.

Mel Beach is a San Jose, CA based quilt artist, teacher and lecturer, who breaks away from tradition by

adding her own modern, beautifully textured and colorful twists. She loves stretching her creativity

through her completion of 60+ quilt challenges at the local and international level. Her quilt challenge

entries draw upon her inquisitive nature of asking "What If?", working in a series, comedy improv

studies along with her love of nature, photography and sketching.

Many of her challenge quilts have been exhibited locally, juried into national quilt shows and traveling

exhibits, published in books/magazines, earned awards/ribbons and selected as Finalists.

She is an Aurifil Artisan and a Featured Artist on The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims

(episode 2112).

Workshop: A Slice of Improv

Explore improvisational piecing one slice at a time! Start with a warmup with the basic Slice and Insert

technique and then ask yourself "What if...?" and introduce simple variations that lead to exciting design

opportunities. Bring your scraps and learn how improvisational piecing is freeing, forgiving and FUN!

In February we will be having our Member Showcase! We will be having three of our members who

have never done a showcase for us before, so you are sure to see lots of “new to you” quilts. Please join

us when Donna Huffman, Yvonne Webb, and our 2019 Best of Show Winner Joanne Florence, present

their quilts to us! It is certain to be a fun evening as we celebrate the accomplishments of our own guild

members!

March 9, 2020 — Shelly Swanland

Lecture: Cathedral Windows and So Much More In March we welcome Author and Quilt Designer Shelly

Swanland. For twenty years Shelley has been creating Cathedral

Window Quilts entirely by machine. The technique uses three-

dimensional piecing to construct the top and during quilting the

bias folds are rolled and stitched in place to create a finished

quilt.

She is the author of “Machine Stitched Cathedral Windows” and

“Machine Stitched Cathedral Stars” and her line of patterns.

Shelley’s talk is a trunk show of her collection of quilts from her

two books, as well as quilts from articles, her Simply Quilts appearance and patterns. It also includes

current works, personal stories and anecdotes from experiences in the world of quilt designing.

Workshop: “Lacquer Parchment & Black Table Runner”

We will be taking sign-ups for this workshop at the January meeting.

This 3-block table runner has the feel of stained glass but is easier than it looks. Three-dimensional

triangles, an element of the Cathedral Window technique, are used to create the effect. Learn this

technique in this workshop. You will be able to put the top together and the quilting will be thoroughly

explained. Kits of different styles will be available for purchase for $15 in the class if you wish.

Many thanks to those of you who lent us your beautiful holiday quilts for the Heritage Hill display.

Thanks to Jo Whitley, Sharon Ludwig, Mary Lu Booker, Janine D’Anna, Darla Cox, Jan Johnson,

Peggy Phillips, and Fay Kerneen. Thank you also to Fay Kerneen, Gina Whitelaw and Bev Ziese for

helping with set-up and take-down of the quilts.

house from static and historical to “warm”. This event is also great for advertising our guild and

quilting in general. Thank you all.

April 13, 2020 - Allyson Allen

Lecture: “Slave Era Quilts”. Allyson's quilt journals combine art, craft, research, original design,

history and culture in traditional and contemporary pieces to exemplify a cross-disciplinary approach to

quilt making. She combines traditional textiles and fibers with paper, recycled materials, and other

objects to create unique, dimensional mixed media pieces, quilts, dolls and handmade books. The

characteristics of her unique, original story quilts are considered information art. Allyson's work often

references American history, social issues, African folklore, or Black history. Many of her quilts are

created specifically for storytelling presentations. Allyson has been a Special Exhibitor and faculty

member for Mancuso Quilt Shows

May - Trudy Cleveland

We welcome quilter and photographer Trudy Cleveland in May. Trudy has two great passions in life –

quilting and photography. In 2010, she started a longarm quilting business. When customers came to

pick up their beautiful quilts, she found she hated to part with them and so she started to take pictures of

every quilt she had longarmed for a customer. Trudy’s photographs were featured in the July/August

2018 issue of Fons and Porter: Love of Quilting magazine’s feature article, “Quilts of Valor Ceremony.”

Lecture: My Adventures in Quilting: Trudy will share tips and techniques on how to photograph

your quilts with your smartphone. No expensive equipment needed! This is an informative program full

of useful information you can start using immediately.

Monday, May 11 Workshop, “How to Photograph Your Quilts”

We are excited to welcome Ann Shaw to the FGQG. Ann's 34 years of experience as a college professor

and her keen eye for design and color as well as a great sense of humor all combine to provide a great

program. Ann has an intuitive way of piecing in the style of Ruth Mc Dowell…. then she made this her

own!

to designing quilts and how differing choices can influence the look of a quilt

Amy has been inspired by the work of Rhoda Cohen, Gwen Marston, Freddy Moran, Sylvia Einstein,

Katie Pasquini Masopust, Cynthia England, Ruth McDowell and others that offered her new insights into

quilting.

Sunday, June 7 Workshop, “Flowers of the Gorge”

Flowers have been an enduring source of inspiration for quilters; many traditional quilt blocks feature

flower patterns. The remarkable array of miniature wildflowers that can be found in the Columbia River

Gorge and surrounding hills of the Cascade Mountains inspired the series of flower designs. Based on

the design and piecing techniques of Ruth McDowell, these designs take traditional patchwork a step

further through the use of unexpected fabric choices.

September - Karen Gloeggler

Please join your fellow quilters for a unique presentation by Las Vegas based quilter, Karen Gloeggler.

She loves quilting and began quite an adventure when she searched for inspiration to design a quilt for

her niece and accidentally discovered that Jane Austen made a quilt. What followed is an adventure

that took her to Jane Austen’s House Museum in England to see the quilt in person.

Karen’s quilts are eclectic, ranging from traditional, to art quilts, to modern. Karen’s inspiration comes

from nature, old quilts, and sacred geometry. Her quilts are created in a quiet, peaceful, loving cocoon

of a studio, and are infused with love, serenity, and positivity.
