Slurry pumping is one of the most demanding applicationsfor any pump...and one of the costliest when it comes towear and tear, maintenance and downtime. With a Flygt5500 series slurry pump, you have an effective solution tothe rising costs of slurry handling: robust, hard-workingpumps that lower operating and maintenance costs andoffer excellent value in terms of initial investment.
The submersible solution to cutting costsFor a start, the submersible concept offers a number of keybenefits over dry-mounted pumps. It doesn’t require anysupport superstructure, therefore requires less space foroperation - an important factor in any industry.
Being submersible also means it’s flood-proof. There are nolong or exposed mechanical links between the motor unitand the volute - so maintenance can be greatly reduced.Operating underwater also means quiet operation.
A tough choiceExperience shows that the design of the impeller and voluteis as important as the choice of material in order to mini-mize the wear rate. The 5500 series has been specificallydesigned for tough, high-wear applications, offering a verylow wear rate.
The wet end is made entirely from high chrome cast ironfor complete protection. And each pump in the rangefeatures what is probably the most reliable slurry seal system in the business.
Easier selectionChoosing the slurry pump that’s right for your application is simple, thanks to the Flyps pump selection software from ITT Flygt. For instance, using Flygt slurry pumpsequipped with an agitator helps to prevent solids build-upon the sump floor. In particularly tough conditions, cleaningcan be further helped by the addition of an externally-mounted Flygt submersible mixer. Mixers can be used tobring large quantities of sediment into suspension, simplifying the process of pumping out the slurry.

Longer service life, lower operating costs: the inside story
Heavy duty, long-life motorsSquirrel cage induction motors for ClassS1 duty, designed and manufactured byITT Flygt. Class H (5570 Class F) insulatedstator windings rated at 180°C (350°F).
Full range of sensors for extra operational safetyStator Housing: leakage. A float switchshuts the pump down if water is detected.
Stator Housing: temperature. Thermalsensors are embedded in the statorwindings to prevent overheating.
Bearing Sensor: monitors bearingtemperature (optional).
Larger bearing designThe main bearing consists of a speciallydeveloped two-row angular contact ballbearing, countering both radial and axialforces.
Easy oil checksEasy-to-perform oil checks allow rapidinvestigation of seal condition. Oil turns milky white if it contains water. This can be checked by opening aninspection screw on the side of thepump. The oil lubricates and dissipatesheat from the seals.
Shaft design eliminates deflectionThe short shaft overhang virtually eliminates shaft deflection, resulting in a dramaticincrease in sealand bearing life, low vibrationand near-silentoperation.
Fast access to wear partsDrive unit and wet endeasily separated for fastaccess to wear parts with
a back pull-out function. All parts coming intocontact with the medi-
um are made of highchrome cast iron. Split
casing design allows the lining of the volute to be replaced easily.
Unique double seal systemThe pump is equipped with an isolationzone in order to release the seal systemfrom pressures above the submersivedepth and to prevent the slurryfrom directly penetratingthe seal system. Anexpeller sits on thehub of the impellerat the entrance tothe isolation zone.It expels particlesthat may haveentered the zone outand away from the seals.
Solid tungsten carbide sealsThe heart of the seals are the matingrings. These are made from solid tungsten carbide, the stiffest and hardest material, for increased abrasion resistance.
Protected spring systemA spring system keeps the mating rings working closely together. To protect the spring, it is encased
in its own sealed isolation zone.
External flushingFor liquids with a very high
and sticky solid content, exter-nal flushing is possible. A hose
feeds the isolation zone with cleanwater, preventing slurry from coming
into contact with the seals.

Wear-resistant impeller design The shape of the impeller used in slurryhandling is important in ensuring high wearresistance and hydraulic efficiency. Highhydraulic efficiency is the result of reducedinternal losses.
The Flygt 5500 impeller is specificallydesigned for high wear applications. Incomparison with conventional designs, theFlygt impeller has a more swept-backdesign. This ensures a more homogenousflow between the vanes, minimizing theseparation of solids and carrier fluid andresulting in extremely low wear rates. Astandard curved impeller would force slurryagainst the surfaces of the vane due to theheterogeneous flow. The result would thenbe relatively high rates of wear.
Wear-resistant voluteBecause of the tangential outflow of parti-cles from the impeller, suspended particleshit the liner at an almost parallel angle, thus decreasing liner wear. The larger volutesize also means a lower internal velocity, which further reduces the amount of wear.
Performance reduction during slurry pumpingPumping slurry can cause severe reductionof a pump’s hydraulic efficiency. The Flygtimpeller is specifically designed to minimizethis drop in efficiency. Official comparisonsshow that the efficiency of conventionalimpellers can drop twice as much as theFlygt design. Higher pumping efficienciesalso correlate with lower wear rates.
Hydraulic Design: the shape ofhigh efficiency and low velocity
Conventional impeller design separates solids from carrier fluid. Greaterimpact forces on both sides of impeller vane contribute to greater wear.
Swept-back impeller design and larger volute mean more homogeneousflow with less wear to all contact surfaces.

Optimizing your performanceand applications
Unique agitator for maximum resuspension of solidsThe robust axial flow agitator from ITT Flygt is designedfor maximum resuspension of settled particles. Thismakes them easier to transport and ensures a cleanersump at the end of the pumping cycle.
Standard agitator design vs. Flygt agitator The standard design creates a radial flow, merely stirringthe fluid. The Flygt agitator creates a vertical thrust forcefor maximum resuspension of solid particles.
Cleaner sump technologyITT Flygt can provide advice and help with sump con-struction. The addition of an agitator in smaller sumps, ora dedicated mixer in larger sumps, can significantlyenhance the efficiency of suspending solids.
Methods of installation
Permanent DryFlood-proof solution for wetwell / dry well or in-linepumping systems.
Semi-Permanent WetCost-effective wet pit installa-tion minimizing structuralcosts.
Portable WetVersatile, easy to install,multi-purpose.
Horizontally-mountedPermanent DryWell or in-line installation withflange connections for suctionand discharge pipe work.6
Flygt slurry pump with highchrome wear-resistant 90°elbow, automatic couplerand guide bars for easyremoval and insertion.
Attach the agitator in sumpswhere total homogeneity ofslurry is not required.
For large sumps with verycoarse and heavy particlesand/or the need for homo-geneous slurry, use a Flygtmixer in combination withthe agitator.
