Our Master’s Program in MathematicsHamburg University offers a research-oriented Master’s degree program covering a wide range of pure and applied mathe-matics. The program is designed to
› enhance your mathematical skills, knowledge and insight
› train you to do your own independent research
› give you a memorable two years working closely with some of our leading researchers.
The Department of Mathematics You can choose your courses from a variety of subjects, including topics from the three main fi elds of research at our department:
› Algebraic, Geometric and Discrete Structures
› Optimization and Partial Differential Equations
› Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics.
You will have the opportunity to pursue your studies within one of our active and internationally-acclaimed research groups.
Career prospectsAfter successfully completing the Master’s degree program you will have acquired advanced expertise in your fi eld of research as well as analytical and problem solving skills. There are plenty of career opportunities for such highly qualifi ed mathema-ticians; they can be found in all professional areas requiring complex problem-solving. These areas in-clude research at universities, but also a wide range of non-academic opportunities: in the fi nancial sec-tor, the IT industry, in industrial research and devel-opment, or in business consulting.
Application and AdmissionAdmission requirementsA bachelor’s degree
Application deadlines for enrollment are as follows June 1 - July 15 for the winter termDecember 1 - January 15 for the summer term
Further information on how to apply can be found atwww.math.uni-hamburg.de/master/math/admission.html
The program commences in October 2009.

The ProgramOur Master’s program takes two years. During the fi rst year you will attend lecture courses and seminars at increasingly advanced levels. You will be free to choose your topics from our wide range of courses. But we shall help you in focussing your studies in a way that best suits your scientifi c curiosity and abilities.
In your second year you will pursue original mathematical re-search for your Master’s Thesis. An introductory project, designed specifi cally for you, will provide you with the most current knowledge of your respective fi eld. In the preparatory project you then learn to use the advanced mathematical methods you will need. During your whole second year you will be personally supervised by a member of the Department. You will join one of our research groups and participate in its activities.
Having received a Master’s degree you may apply to continue towards a PhD. This will typically take another two to three years, spent directly on your research project under personal supervision.
