The contemporary craft and design market is a big industry and it’s hungry for new recruits, who have imagination and know how to use it, an affinity for materials and the knowledge to manipulate them, combined with an ability to design and communicate and a flair to predict what
people really want.
And here they are!
I am quite sure they will follow previous alumni into senior roles in retail buying, management and design, or they will establish formidable careers as studio makers, artists and illustrators, or they will become outstanding academics
and visionary teachers.
With that in mind I would like to wish them all the very best of luck for the future, well done.
I would also like to mention all those whose dedication, commitment and loyalty have made this possible; from the senior management, the administrative and technical staff and of course the indispensable Decorative Arts academic
team.
Thank you all. Lharne Shaw

My work is inspired by anything I see around me, particularly geometry-based with exciting forms. I love to bring the idea of shape to the forefront of all my projects and take it to its full potential using textiles and embroidery, working with both contemporary and traditional techniques as well as maintaining a
strong focus on colour.

The collection showcases the individuality embodied within each of the twelve star signs. Each vessel uses a playful yet poignant material choice in an attempt to echo the diverse nature of each personality. Whether it be fact or fiction, wisdom or myth, the stars inspire each stereotype to come to life through this series of allusive vessels.

My woodwork explores the relationship between unfinished and finished wood, and how this combination can question what aesthetically pleasing design is. The theme behind my designs is comparisons; curved/straight, dark/light and rough/smooth. I extract my shapes from ‘everyday objects’ and focus primarily on surface, texture, and form.

My idea is to manipulate and test materials through computer design and laser cutting in order to increase flexibility and the ability to bend into forms which would ordinarily be unnatural for materials such as wood and acrylic. My ideas are translated through lighting which is heavily influenced by Scandinavian design.

Although nature was always an inspiration for me, it was water and aquatic birds which heavily influenced my recent work. Using observation and creativity has led to the design of highly detailed, hand drawn patterns and illustrations, which are transformed into screen prints.
