Energy Saving & Plant Maintenance
How to start
• Genuine energy savings without significant capital expense– By taking action and establishing best practices, the average facility can achieve
an 18 to 25 percent reduction in energy costs.
• Commit– Decide to take action. – Create a culture that values energy savings and evangelizes its benefits. – Build a team with the authority to take action.
• Execute– Establish baselines through an energy audit. – Prioritize and set targets. – Implement best practices.
• Sustain– Build a process based on action instead of reaction. – Reward good behavior. – Seek opportunities for continuous improvement
Top 5 ways to save energy:Building envelope
Application:• The envelope separates the outside from the inside, and it's imperfect.• When the difference in temperature between the outside and inside is at its greatest (heating or cooling season, early morning/early evening), a thermal imager can spot leaks in the building envelope that are wasting energy.
What to scan: • Roofs • Walls between conditioned spaces• Construction joints and connections • Pipes, conduits, chimneys, etc.• Door and window frames and seals
Anticipated savings of professionals: • Following up on findings of an energy audit saves at least 15 % on energy bills• Roofs offer the greatest savings, and spot repairs are the most economical.
Top 5 ways to save energy:HVAC Systems
Application:The heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system is usually one of the biggest energy consumers within a facility.
What to scan: • Ductwork and registers • Fans and blower • Electrical connections
Anticipated savings of professionals: • Studies indicate: commercial buildings with constant-air-volume systems often experience energy losses from air leakage of as much as 33 percent • Considerable savings can be achieved with simple sealing,
insulation remedies
Top 5 ways to save energy:HVAC Systems
Top 5 ways to save energy:Motors and Generators
Application:Electrical motors are one of the biggest energy consumers in any facility. Overheating and malfunctioning motors and generators tend to indicate mechanical or electrical inefficiencies that lead to
more energy use and ultimately, failure
What to scan: • Airflow/intake • Electrical unbalance • Bearings • Insulation • Electrical connections Anticipated savings of professionals: The 2 best ways to reduce energy are to: •Check Power Quality feeded to motors• Keep motors well maintained at maximum efficiency • Size appropriately and operate at constant speeds• Doing this for a period of time will yield energy savings
Top 5 ways to save energy:Motors and Generators
What do we mean by power quality ?
A perfect power supply would be one that is always available , always within voltage and frequency tolerances , and has a pure noise-free sinusoidal wape shape.
Just how much deviation from perfection can be tolerated depends on the user‘s application , the type of equipment installed and his view of his requirements.
Reasons for PQ Problems
• Past - loads were “linear”– Induction-motors, heating, bulbs
– voltage has been directly followed by current - only a few problems
• Present – loads are mostly “not linear”– Computers, motor-control, Halogen Lighting etc.
– Current is pulse shaped, the result: Harmonics
• Increasing creators of disturbances
• Equipment has become more sensitive
• Cost cutting within the de-regulated energy market
Harmonics
If we take a guitar and strummed a string near the end, we could find that the string vibrates at a frequency multiple of the fundamental.
In electrical field the harmonic is an integer multiple of the fundamental.

Top 5 ways to save energy:Boilers
Application:
Boilers, of course, are the heart of steam and hot water heating systems
What to scan: • Refractories • Leakage of outside air • Boiler casing insulation • Fan motors • Pumps and Valves
Anticipated savings of professionals: In boilers, major energy losses typically represent 10 to 20 % of fuel input, depending upon fuel type. Insulation and boiler economizers can reduce these
losses.
Top 5 ways to save energy:Boilers

• Failed-open traps will be hot on both sides

Lastly.....What NOT to do
•Four common mistakes and their effects are as follows:
•Reduce or eliminate best practices >>
•Shut off HVAC equipment >>
•Stop developing personnel >>
•Stop investing in new technology >>
New Technology
• Fluke manufactures many Tools & Instruments that can help engineers Execute and Sustain Costs Saving plans
– Process calibrators– Pressure modules– Electrical testers– Multimeters and clamp meters– Power quality Tools– Digital Thermometers– Thermal imagers– Vibration Tester– Etc.
• is the science of seeing heat patterns using special electronic cameras
Rather than seeing light, these remarkable instruments create pictures of heat. They measure infrared (IR) energy and convert the data to images corresponding to the temperature.
Thermal imaging
Thermal imaging Applications• Thermography covers a broad range of applications:
– Industrial maintenance– Research and development– Building diagnostics– Fire and security– Heath care: human as well as animal
• Our strength is in the Industrial maintenance segment– Fluke brand is recognized and appreciated– Focus of distribution channel– Here, Thermography ties into the rest of the portfolio– … and it’s the biggest segment with high growth expectations– … volume in industrial is expected to triple when prices come down
• We will win by focusing on Industrial Maintenance user– Focus all activities around Thermography on the Industrial
maintenance segment.

Roof Inspection
• Water from a leak in a roof membrane is either absorbed by the insulation or runs to cracks between the nonabsorbent insulation
• Water, once it has entered a roof assembly, may remain for the life of the roof
• Dry roof insulation has low heat capacitance and heats and cools faster than wet insulation

In-Floor Heating continued
•A Fluke Thermal Imager can sometimes be used to trace electrical installations by the heat generated in wiring

•A Fluke Thermal Imager can identify areas where insulation is missing or not performing

•What’s new ??????What’s new in Thermal Imaging?
Are Fluke Thermal Imagers easy to use?
Yes. If you take pictures with a “point and shoot” digital camera, you can easily use a Fluke Thermal Imager.
Fluke Thermal Imagers can be set either automatic or manual modes, similar to adjustments you might make on a digital camera.
Simply:
1. Point
2. Focus
3. Capture
As long as you have focused the Imager correctly you basically cannot make any mistakes as you can change everything afterwards with the software
What is IR-Fusion® ?
• IR-Fusion only is available on Fluke Thermal Imagers
– Be aware of imitations !
• IR-Fusion links the Thermal Image with the Visual Image
– Easier to understand what you are looking at
* See the context
* Read any markers/labels/text
* No laser pointer needed
– Easier to report findings to others
* No need to also take a picture with a normal camera
– Helps you focus the Thermal Imager better
* The Thermal Imager is focused correctly when the Thermal and Visual images are completely aligned
Fluke IR-Fusion®…
During Inspection & Software analysis
• For the most part, we see surfaces
• However, the heat we are interested in knowing about usually originates from the inside
• Open enclosure doors, when possible
– You cannot see through enclosure doors!
• Be sure to comply with existing safety regulations when working around active panels.
We see surface temperatures only
Practical Solution…….
Use IR Windows……..
What is an IR Window?
• An infrared window allows a thermal imaging camera to image live electrical installations through a closed panel in safety.
• It uses an optic made from coated crystal material which transmits infrared radiation as well as visible light.
Can be fitted indoors or outdoors (IP65)
Why use an IR Window?
•SAFETY – Minimise the risk of arc-flash and serious injury
•SPEED – No shutdown, no isolation, no cabinet opening or panel removal
•EFFICIENCY – Survey carried out at full load, no electrician required to accompany thermographer
How are IR windows used?
