You can extend this game by asking your child to go and get an item beginning with ‘s’ e.g. their s-ock. Try to sound the letter to give it more emphasis. Encourage answers that mean your child has used what they can see in the picture to guide their answer. Please read the flip book version of The Enormous Turnip. If this is difficult for any reason please talk about the pictures of the story. Key vocab to focus on: Enormous – very, very big Budge - move Turnip – a round root vegetable Literacy Can you have a go a painting a picture using a carrot as a paintbrush? Put a little paint in into a cup or pot and dip the carrot into the paint. Use the carrot like a paint brush to paint a picture. What did you paint?

MathsThe little old man in the story planted some turnip seeds. Before he planted them he needed to count them! Using dried beans, lentils, pasta or even some seeds from inside an apple see it you could count out amounts into pots. These pots can be from your recycling, plant pots or even just some cups. Use the picture to help you count out amounts up to ten.

Understanding of the world The little old man in the story planted the turnip seeds. The seeds went through different stages in order to grow into a turnip.

1- Seeds are planted2- Seeds start to form a small shoot and roots 3- The shoot grows taller and is now called a seedling 4- The seedling grows even larger into a plant5- The turnip grows under the ground

If you have any seeds at home or

if you save some seeds from an apple could you try to get them to grow? You can start seeds off in a sandwich bag with some cotton wool if you don’t have any soil. These can be stuck to window so you can see their growth.Alternatively you can grow some vegetables from scraps please see this website for ideas: https://www.ruralsprout.com/regrow-vegetables/

Don’t forget you will need to water you seed every day so that it does not dry out.

Expressive arts and designTake some paper and fold it into a book (you will need an adult to help you do this). On the front cover get you adult to write – My Seed Diary then draw a picture of the plant you are growing. On the first page get your grown up to write – today we planted (and the seed you planted). Draw a picture of how you planted your seed.

Name practise – please also use this time to practise name writing with your child every day. You could follow some of the advice on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swwxOB4MS-YPlease do not get your child to write their full name in capitals only a capital at the beginning the rest lower case.
