Industry Programme Leader

Paul Russell MSc, BA (Hons), MIMarESTMarine Engineer and Education Specialist

Paul completed a traditional engineering cadetship with Cunard Shipping Services. During his sea going career he served on all types of ships from passenger ships to super tankers and gained his class one

certificate in 1983. His sea service included medium speed engines powering small tankers; slow speed engines driving bulk carriers and a steam plant providing the power for container ships. Paul saw service as assistant to the superintendent during the building of Cunard’s new Ro-Ro ship at Swan Hunter’s shipyard on the River Tyne.

After his sea going career Paul was recruited by the National Sea Training Trust to introduce marine engineering education and training into the college at Gravesend. Subsequently Paul also took charge of the college estates and finances and during this time he studied to obtain a Masters degree in Educational Management at The University of Greenwich. In 1996 Paul was appointed as Head of the National Sea Training Centre, now known as the National Maritime Training Centre at North West Kent College, where he undertook the role of Course Director for the Diploma in Marine Surveying run with Lloyd’s Maritime Academy. TIME ALLOCATION The MSc, as a postgraduate qualification, requires a significant time commitment.

Applying the usual University guide for a masters we recommend allowing between 30-40 hours per month over the 18 months of the programme.

This is a guideline only and time commitments may fluctuate throughout the programme, due to the amount of studying or assessment required at any particular time. Your prior knowledge and whether English is your first language could also have an effect.

The very nature of a distance learning programme requires you to adopt a disciplined and independent approach to your studies. In order to study independently you will require good time management skills and self-motivation.

HOW TO APPLY It’s quicker to apply online at www.lloydsmaritimeacademy.com/msc which also securely accepts credit card payment with your application.

Alternatively you can complete and return the excel version available to download from www.lloydsmaritimeacademy.com/msc.

Please note that one passport style photograph and a copy of the back page of your passport showing your photograph is required for University records. These can both be provided electronically.
