Letter From Our New President Being appointed by the Board of Directors as the new President of the FKCA is a great honor. I only hope that I can live up to the high standards of achievement that has been set by my predecessor. As in the past, my door is always open to our members for any assis-tance in any contracting issues that you may have. I would like to thank the Board of Directors for the con-fidence that they have in me to act as President of the FKCA, also a big thank you to Brenda McNalley for staying on as the Assistant to the President and the Board of Directors. We would not be able to fulfill our duties without her endless service. The Board of Directors would like to wish all of our members a happy, healthy, safe and prosperous New Year and a successful 2009. Respectfully, Chris Gratton, President Florida Keys Contractors Association

As the New Year is upon us, we hope that all our mem-bers have had a happy and healthy Holiday season, and that Santa was good to all. This new year comes with a few changes within our As-sociation. Jeff Ryder has decided to step down as a member of the Board of Directors. We appreciate his dedicated service as a longtime Director and look for-ward to Jeff still being an active member of the FKCA. Thank you Jeff for all your work. Another big change is that our President, Rudy Krause, has taken a position on the Contractors Examining Board with Monroe County. As a member of the CEB board Rudy will not be able to act as President of the FKCA. Rudy’s tireless efforts, unstoppable enthusiasm and unending dedication to the FKCA will surely be missed. Our Association under the guidance of Rudy Krause has gained tremendous clout within the South Florida building community. We wish him much success in his new endeavor as a member of the CEB board and look forward to seeing him at our General Membership meetings.

FKCA 2009 Board Openings This year the association has three Board positions open due to attrition along with adding additional positions. Below is a list of nominations that we have received. THERE’S NO “I” IN TEAM! Coming Together in the Workplace You’ve probably already heard the anecdote “there’s no ‘I’ in team,” probably back in grade school when playing a game of dodge ball. Well, this lesson does not stop at age 10—it is just as important to work as a team in a workplace setting as it was back then. It is even more important to act as a united team when it concerns everyone’s safety. A staff that pulls together can safely accom-plish whatever they set out to do. To be a team player: Ask for assistance. By seeking help from others, you are reducing the risk of accidents by not trying to do something on your own. Look out for other coworkers at all times and they will do the same for you. Analyze near-accidents carefully so similar incidents do not oc-cur in the future. Share your concerns and suggestions with coworkers and your supervisor, and encourage others to do the same. Whew! That Was a Close Call! The Hidden Meaning in Near-Misses

Have you ever had to slam on your brakes to avoid hitting the car

in front of you or catch your balance right before you took a tumble on an icy patch? These are certainly close calls, telling you to wake up and pay attention to your surroundings. Like the scenarios above, close calls or near-misses on the job should be converted into safety precautions; they are a big red flag that something is wrong, such as a machine is malfunction-ing, stock is not stacked adequately or someone has done some-thing unsafe. Employees just like you can handle these instances in a way that turns near-misses into learning experiences and prevents accidents from occurring. Think safety and take concern when near-misses occur. Correct the situation, remove the hazards that caused the near accident, and take the time to discuss the hazard and solution with your coworkers and supervisor.
