Welcome (0 the John G. and Susan H. DuPuis . .lr.
Wildlife and Environmental Area. The property contains
21 ,875 acres of pine flatwoods, wet prairies, hammocks,
marsh and cypress domes. It was purchased by the South
Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) in 1986
through the Save Our Rivers program. Stewardship of the
property is currently a cooperative effort between the
SFWMD and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission (FWC). Prior to SFWMD acquisition, the
property was operated as a cattle and sheep ranch by the
late John G. DuPuis, Jr., of Miami .
The area is home to numerous species of wildlife,
including deer turkey, quail , squirrel, fox, coyote, feral
pig and bobcat. A variety of waterfowl and wading birds
use the propeliy ' s abundant wetlands. These species are
most plentiful when water levels are receding and food
sources become more concentrated. Bald eagles, owls and
hawks are liequently sighted throughout the propelty.
Woodpeckers and songbirds are common in upland areas.
DuPuis offers many recreational opportunities for the
outdoor enthusiast, including more than 35 miles of the
Florida Trai l composed offour loops ranging from 5
miles to 15.6 miles. The tra il includes a connector tra il to
the J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area. Hiking trails
cross a variety of terrains from wet lands to hammocks.
Overnight camping is available at the equestrian
campgTOund, backcountry campsites on the hiking trails
and tbe general-use family campground. A group camp
site is avai lable by reservation only. Public use activities
include hiking, fishing, hunting, horseback rid ing, bicy
cling, camping and nature study. For general infonnation
regarding all activities please call, 561-924-5310 or visit
