Providing pro bono research services for public interest legal organizations. The Florida Coastal Public Interest Research Bureau (“the Bureau”) provides free legal research services to lawyers working for public interest law organizations. The goal of the Bureau is to provide student research and writing services to poverty law attorneys in an effort to make justice available to all. The service is provided at no cost to participating Legal Services Programs.

Using the Bureau’s online program is easy. Attorneys in participating Legal Services Programs can access the Bureau’s user friendly website at www.fcsl.edu/researchbureau and, within minutes, post a research request. Step-by-step directions are provided on the website to allow for easy uploading of any supportive documents, such as pleadings or motions. If no documents are needed to complete the project, an online from can be submitted that includes relevant facts, legal cites, if any, and further instructions. A Bureau Research Associate will then be assigned to the projects and will follow up with the organization.

Bureau Student Research Associates have full access to our extensive law library collection and services. These resources include access to reported decisions in all 50 states, all federal courts, state and federal rules and regulations, law reviews, treatises, practice manuals and a substantial number of other legal and non-legal research sources, including Westlaw and LexisNexis. The research assistance provided by the Student Research Associates can range from written or oral legal analysis to finding and gathering legal research materials such as judicial decisions, administrative rules, or legislation.

Bureau Student Research Associates research a wide range of issues. Whether it’s spot legal research to find cases on a narrow point of law, a written memorandum identifying authority

to support a claim, research on an evidentiary issue, support for entitlement to damages in a Fair Housing case, or legal authority for an appeal, the Bureau provides assistance with a variety of Legal Services Program needs.

For more on the Bureau, please send an email to [email protected] or call (904) 256-1191.
