Rattler Football Game Notes

A Clash Of Gridiron Titans Is SetTwo legendary college football rivals renew

their long rivalry in Tampa Bay Saturday

Florida A&M and Tennessee State Football evoke memories amongst theirfans akin to the heavyweight boxing title bouts of yesteryear. These two storied gridiron programs fashioned a tightly-contested ri-valry, whose games became among the most anticipated each year, andhad a great impact on whom the eventual Black College Football cham-pion would be in a given season. Between FAMU and TSU, 22 Black College National Championships werewon, and the programsspawned numerous star players and Hall of Fame coaches, who contrib-uted their own special flavor to a rivalry which spans some eight decadesfrom 1944 to the present. Add the fabled marching bands from both schools, and you have theingredients for a singular sports and entertainment spectacle.

@ TSU holds a narrow 30-24 edge overthe Rattlers in a hard-fought serieswhich dates back to 1944.

@ Perhaps the greatest game in theseries took place in 1956, when thetwo schools came into the Orange Blos-som Classic unbeaten and untied, withthe Tigers escaping with a 41-39victory and the 1956 Black CollegeNational title.

@ The two schools have combined towin 22 Black College NationalChampionships – FAMU 12, TSU 10

@ These two schools have producedscores of outstanding NFL athletes, such as Bob Hayes, Willie Galimore,Ken Riley, Henry Lawrence and NateNewton of FAMU, and ClaudeHumphrey, Ed “Too Tall” Jones, Ri-chard Dent, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie of TSU.

(Claude Humphrey, Richard Dent, aSuper Bowl XX MVP) players in its’ranks.

@ The school’s marching bands areamong the nation’s best and most en-tertaining, the world famous FAMU“Marching 100” and TennesseeState’s “Aristocrat of Bands.”

FAMU AND TAMPARattler Football and the Tampa Bayarea have a long sports history datingback to the 1930s, when FAMU playedalmost annually as part of a virtualbarnstorming tour of the SunshineState. From fabled old Phillips Field, toanother fabled venue, the formerTampa Stadium, affectionately knownas “The Old Sombrero,” to several rela-tively recent encounters against theUSF Bulls in Raymond James Stadium,FAMU has had a presence in the BayArea.

The 1977 FAMU RattlerFootball Team was truly ateam of distinction. Not only were they the lastundefeated football team in theillustrious history of the FAMUFootball Program, but they holdthe singular distinction of beingAmerica’s ONLY UNDEFEATEDTEAM of any level of collegefootball in 1977.

Forty years later, that perfectseason still resonates with theplayers, the coaches and fanswho experienced that scintillat-ing run, and that campaignwould provide a virtually un-stoppable momentum whichcarried over into the next twoyears. The seeds of that undefeatedseason and the two years afterwere sown in the soaking wetturf of the Tangerine Bowl inOrlando in 1976, the site ofFAMU’s bitter 34-0 loss toarchrival Bethune-Cookman. Needless to say, FAMU put theangst from that setback to gooduse over the next three years, following up that perfect 1977season to become the first NCAADivision I-AA (now FootballChampionship Subdivision, orFCS) in 1978, in another historic, odds defying campaign (12-1),winding up with a sizzling 5-0start to the 1979 season (7-4finish), which featured the epic16-13 October upset of theUniversity of Miami in DoakCampbell Stadium. Between 1977 and 1979, FAMUwent a sizzling 30-5 – a threeyear run of success which sawFAMU compile 17-game and 12-game winning streaks, captureback-to-back Black CollegeNational Championships (1977,1978), along with the NCAA title

FAMU TO FACE THE CAMERAS FOUR TIMES:FAMU will be one of the most televised FCS programs in2017, with four (4) games lined up for the tube… Afterlast week’s season opener against Texas Southern(ESPNU), the Rattlers will appear on the SEC Networkagainst Arkansas (Aug. 31) in the first of two ThursdayNight Lights specials…. Sept. 28, FAMU will host defend-ing MEAC champion North Carolina Central in a 7:30p.m. Thursday tilt at Bragg Stadium on ESPNU…. FAMUcloses the regular season on Nov. 18 in Orlando in theFlorida Blue Florida Classic against archrival Bethune-Cookman (2:00 p.m. ET) on ESPN Classic.

QB BATTLE HEADLINED TEAM NEWS: Enteringhis third season at the helm of the Orange and GreenMachine, coach Alex Wood may finally feel comfortablewith his quarterback situation… Redshirt sophomoreRyan Stanley, senior Vincent Jeffries, rifle-armed redshirtfreshman Tahj Tolbert, and incoming freshman lefty D.J.Phillips, make up a four-man talent pool that puts theFAMU Program in fine shape for a while… Stanley, whotook over the starting job against Savannah State lastseason, finished 4-3 as a starter, and despite beingpushed hard by Jeffries and Tolbert in both the springand in training camp, has been relentless in his efforts toremain atop the depth chart… Those efforts paid offSaturday in the win over Texas Southern, as he led FAMUto a comfortable win, throwing for 217 yards on 19 of 32passing, tossing one scoring pass, while rushing foranother TD.... Jeffries did get some playing time in too,

rushing for a score, while hitting one of six aerials for fiveyards against Texas Southern... He got the start againstArkansas, when FAMU held out Stanley as a precaution(ankle), tossing a TD pass to Brandon Norwood in thethird period, before giving way late in the fourth toTolbert, who went 0-for-2 in his only drive...

SKILL PLAYERS READY TO ROLL: With the im-proved performances from the Rattler quarterbacks andoffensive line, will come more chances for the FAMU skillplayers to showcase their talents… First-team PreseasonAll-MEAC senior WR Brandon Norwood heads a talentedcadre of sticky fingered pass catchers ready to make theFAMU passing game great again… Senior ChavissMurphy will start opposite Norwood, and senior KareemSmith, who will also return kicks, will see time in the slot, with a talented list of players such as Kevin Troutman, redshirts Dock Luckie, Marcus Williams and Chad Hunterslated to be in the mix too… The FAMU ground game willfeature junior tailback Devin Bowers, the club rushingleader the past two seasons, with redshirts Ricky Henrilusand Azende Rey, senior Tevin Spells, junior Hans Supreand sophomore Kevin Newman, all vying for prime time.

OFFENSIVE LINE OPTIMISM: In addition to replen-ishing the talent pool at quarterback, the FAMU staffworked hard on a rebuild of the offensive line, an areathat had declined badly for several seasons…. That unitshowed flashes of resurgence down the stretch in 2016,and the fact that three players: senior Osman Aguilera, and sophomores Obinna Nkwanko and Loubens Polinice– were named Preseason All-League means that the hard

13131313132017 FLORIDA A&M FOOTBALL MEDIA PAK * www.FAMUAthletics.com

work of building up the front line is beginning to payoff… The front line will be a sophomore-junior mix, whichmeans that their best days are ahead which is good newsfor FAMU.

TALENT UPGRADES SHOULD SHOW UP IN 2017:Coach Alex Wood and his staff spent the last two-and-halfyears scouring Florida and all points beyond the stateline to bolster the talent pool at FAMU… Last season’s 4-7finish, featuring four wins in the final seven games, followed by the Preseason All-MEAC teams which sawnine FAMU players selected may be the best indicationsthat their recruiting efforts are being recognized…. Addin the first Spring Practice in two years, with last year’s27-person freshman class which was redshirted, whilesprinkling in a few new faces from this year’s talentchase, and one can understand the feeling of guardedoptimism floating around the FAMU Program…. Also aplus for FAMU was the hiring of strength and conditioningmaven Parker Brooks, who brought a work ethic that wasequal parts pumping iron, stretching for flexibility, and aZen Master approach to bolster the mental part of theRattlers’ game…. Hopefully this fusion of talent andpreparation will allow the Rattlers to take the final step toreturning to contention in the MEAC: being able to closeout games.

THE CASE FOR THE DEFENSE: FAMU’s GanGreenDefense had become a bend but don’t break group inrecent years with the coaching changes, and loss of talenton that side of the ball… But thw past two seasons ofrecruiting has witnessed improved performances…Senior ends Calvin Darville and Elijah Price may well bethe 1-2 punch off the edges FAMU hasn’t seen in years, while veterans like Emilio Gibbs, Addarius Smith andDavid Richardson should bring staying power to thedown line corps…. Linebackers will feature plenty offresh faces, who will play the role of the meanesthombres in the middle of the defense… Returning vetsJakaris Wilson and Raashed Kennion will be in the mixwith a smattering of transfers and redshirts like JabreelHartly and Doyle Grimes, slated for middle duty, withredshirt Elijah Richardson expected to contend withWilson and Kennion for outside duty…. All-MEACreturnees, cornerback Orlando McKinley and safetyTerry Jefferson will be the anchors for a deep quartet thatpromises to be as talented as any in the league….

THE YEAR SEVEN IN FAMU SPORTS HISTORY:FAMU’s rich sports history has witnessed several mile-stones in years ending in the number seven (7)… 1937:Coach William “Big Bill” Bell, leads FAMU to a 6-1-1record, and its’ first SIAC title… 1947: Jake Gaither winsthe first of his six Black College National titles, leadingFAMU to a 9-1-0 record…. 1957: FAMU finished 9-0-0,capturing the first of three Black College National titles inthe five-year span…. Althea Gibson becomes the firstAfrican American winner at Wimbledon and the U.S.Open tennis tournaments… 1977: FAMU Football (11-0-0)finishes the season as the only undefeated team inAmerica…. Head Coach Alex Wood

At first glance, Florida A&M University headfootball coach Alex Wood looks more like an eruditecollege professor than a football coach.

But beyond the personable, mild-mannered,intellectual persona that Wood projects to thepublic, is a fiercely competitive firebrand, whostresses discipline and accountability from hisplayers both on and off the field.

A native of Massillon, Ohio, Wood was a productof the storied Ohio high school program that wasonce led by the legendary Paul Brown, who went onto coach the Cleveland Browns and later found theCincinnati Bengals.

“I wasn’t a supremely gifted athlete,” Wood re-calls. “But I worked hard, worked out hard, liftingweights. I was known as a tough guy, a try hardguy.” Wood, who was a walk-on running back andspecial teams performer at the University of Iowa, eventually earned a scholarship with the Hawkeyes.

It was in the crucible of his years as a dedicated anddetermined young athlete, that the idea of continu-

ing in the game of football was born.

“Many of my coaches in high school and collegeinspired me during my playing career,” Woodrecalls. “Denny (Dennis) Green was one of mycoaches at Iowa. He was an excellent coach, and hewas also the first African American coach I everhad.

“I knew I didn’t have the talent for the NFL,”Wood said, “but I wanted to get something back forwhat I had put into the game, so I moved intocoaching.

“Coaching keeps me in the game (football). Iinteract with other coaches, work clinics, growingand learning so I can pass along that knowledge. That in turn, allows me to teach the fundamentalsof football, instill discipline, to teach life lessons, and place emphasis on character and persever-ance,” said Wood.

“Seeing some of those former players years later, some who may not been great athletes, but whohave become great men is very rewarding, know-ing you helped make a difference, that you touched

FLORIDA A&M HEAD COACH ALEX WOOD

the lives of young men,” he concluded.

Wood, came to Florida A&M from the University ofBuffalo, where he was offensive coordinator the lastfour seasons (2011-14), and interim head coach forthe last half of the 2014 season.

During that four-year run, the Bulls averaged 35points and over 4,000 yards in offense, finding aperfect balance between the run and pass.

His offensive philosophy was no doubt influencedby his various work stops in college, which rangedfrom championship teams at Miami (Fla.), andtours in FCS at James Madison and Southern (La.),to the professional level, in Minnesota, Cincinnatiand Arizona.

In his first two seasons (2015, 2016) at FAMU, theRattlers compiled a 5-17 record, enduring thesometimes unrealistic expectations, adversity anddisappointment that come with the rebuild of aformer perennial gridiron power.

Still, the Rattlers played inspired football, oftenpushing opponents to the fourth quarter, showinggreat strides from the 1-10 inaugural season in2015, to a 4-7 worksheet in 2016, featuring a secondhalf surge to finish in the top half of the conferencestandings.

The big key to Wood’s revival effort has been re-cruiting, and the three classes signed (2015, 2016,2017) have infused the program with the talent anddepth needed to eventually return the Rattlers totheir accustomed lofty perch among the collegefootball elite.

WHAT FAMU FANS CAN EXPECT During his brief tenure at FAMU, Wood has notdeviated at all from the overall philosophy heespoused when he came on board in late 2014, onhow he would mold the program on both sides of theball.

Offensively, Rattler fans can expect to see a nohuddle, hurry up pro style attack, that will utilizemultiple personnel groupings and multiple forma-tions, seeking that critical balance between the runand the pass, while pressuring opposing defenseswith a relentless pace.

“We will snap the ball with 17 seconds on the playclock, seeking to average 95 plays or more everygame. This will allow us to keep opponents vanilla, and not allow them to substitute much,” promisesWood.

Rattler fans got a taste of an up tempo, fastbreakoffense during the Gulf Coast Offense days undercoach Billy Joe (1994-2004), and the possibilities of areturn of those high-flying days has many FAMUansbrimming with anticipation.

“The no-huddle is something we’ve always done,at first late in games, or when things were stagnant,to pump some life back into the offense.

“But now it is a full-time venture, with emphasison a balanced philosophy. We don’t want to be onedimensional, and being able to establish the runallows us to use play action more effectively aswell,” Wood added.

Defensively, stopping the run, which has been achallenge for the Rattlers in recent years, will be thetop priority of Wood’s GanGreen Defense.

“On offense, we want to be equally effective in therun game and through the air, while on defense, wewant to make teams one dimensional, and stoppingthe run will be the key to success on that side of theball.”

Wood will employ multiple fronts on defense, withan aggressive, pressure style, that will cover well inthe secondary, and seek to confuse the quarterback.

“We will play with pace on defense too, running tothe ball like scalded dogs, being sound in ourtackling and looking to create takeaways” Woodsays.

The 39-year coaching veteran appeared morerelaxed and confident following the 2017 SpringGame, as he and his staff put the dazzling array ofdynamic young talent on display to the delight ofover 5,000 fans in Bragg Stadium.

“I expect us to play hard, play smart, play and acomplete game with great excitement for fourquarters,” Wood said of his charges in June, whowere in the early stages of a summer trainingregime that will lead up to the 2017 season openerAugust 26 against Texas Southern.

Rattler fans and opponents can already see themark Alex Wood has put on the FAMU FootballProgram, such that it is reflecting the tenets of hardwork, discipline and character that he has espousedover his long and fruitful career.
