Not only is March Nutrition Month, it’s also the beginning of spring, and the time of year when many people start thinking about getting fit and healthy for summer. Spring cleaning comes to mind, providing the perfect opportunity to not only clean house, but also clean up your diet and refresh your exercise program. We all tend to eat heavier comfort foods and stay indoors more during the colder months. As the weather starts to get warmer, it’s time to switch gears. Visit your local farmers’ market to see what fruits and vegetables are in-season and incorporate a few each week, eliminating some of winter’s heavier, more processed foods. Eating with the seasons not only reduces your carbon footprint, it supports your local farmers and promotes community living. When you think of eating green, you probably think about vegetables like kale, spinach and broccoli, but we’re not talking about vegetables, we want to talk to you about Spirulina, nature’s super food. It is a blue - green algae that is high in protein, nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Available in powder format, this super food makes an excellent addition to not only fruit smoothies, but also sauces and dips. Suitable for vegetarians and vegans, or anyone looking to add a vegan source of protein to their diet, 10 grams of powder contains as much protein as one egg. Try Spirulina today in our delicious Pesto Sauce recipe. (see page 2) March is Nutrition Month clean house, clean up your diet and refresh your exercise program

Spring Cleansing TipsYou know to drink lots of water and eat your fruits and vegetables so we won’t bore you with tips like that. Instead, we are sharing some lesser-known cleansing tips to incorporate into your lifestyle.

Perfect Pesto Sauce! Ingredients:

• 1 ½ cups chopped fresh basil

• 3 tbsp pine nuts

• 3 garlic cloves

• ½ cup virgin olive oil

• ½ cup freshly-grated parmesan cheese

• 1 tsp Gandalf Spirulina powder

• Ground pepper to taste

• 3 tbsp chopped fresh coriander (optional)

Place all ingredients in a food processor except for the olive oil. Blend together, slowly adding the oil until a smooth consistency is achieved. Serve in a pasta salad, or as a spread.

throughout the day, including protein with any fruit to help stabilize your blood sugar levels.

3. Try the 100-kilometre diet. Eating local foods typically means higher nutrient values because they didn’t have to travel thousands of kms to you, then ripen unnaturally.

4. Give 80/20 a chance. Life is meant to be enjoyed so try eating healthy 80% of the time and indulge 20% of the time. This often satis es cravings without completely sabotaging your healthy lifestyle.

5. Pamper yourself. Mental health is often forgotten when cleansing since the focus is on food and exercise. Take some ‘me time’ to read a good book, or visit the spa for a facial–whatever will leave you feeling refreshed mentally.

1. Try an infrared sauna. Not only are they detoxifying, infrared saunas can burn upwards of 600 calories per 30 minute session!

2. Eat less, more often. When cleansing, people tend to skimp on foods, but this leads to blood sugar spikes. Instead eat several, smaller meals and snacks
