    Introduction

1.Mega-Float is very large artificial structures

    floating on the sea

    2.Basically two type:-

    a. semi-submersible

    b. pontoon type(mega float)

    WHY MEGA FLOAT ?

    1.Virtually no influence of earthquake.

2.Few environmental impacts on ocean currents

and marine eco-systems .3.Relatively lower construction cost and shorter

construction period independent of water depth

or soil condition of sea bed

What does Mega Float consists of ?

1.Mega-Float system consists of floating structure,

    mooring system and access facility

2.Mooring system such as dolphin and fender is

provided to moor the floating structure.

3.Access facility such as bridge is provided for

    connection with existing land

    FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED

    FOR ANALYSIS

    1.Horizontal forces

    a) Rigid connection

    b) Compliant connection

    2.Buoyancy forces

    3.Inertia force

    4.Corrosion rate

    Design Loads

    1.Dead load

    2.Hydrostatic pressure (including buoyancy)

    3.Live load

    4.Effects of temperature change

    5.Effects of water current

    Step1:

    Fabrication At Shipyard

1.Relatively small unit with dimensions of

approximately 300m long and 60m wide is

fabricated in dry docks. Generally it is easier

quality-wise and cost-wise to fabricate it at

shipyard than to do it at installation site,

because more effective equipment and more

skilled workers specialized for such a work areavailable there.

    Step2:

    Towing to Installation Site

    1. As fabricated unit has a similar structure to ship,

it is buoyant and able to be transported on sea.

Each unit necessary to install is transported to

site one by one by tugboats with strong engine.

    Step3:

    Installation of Mooring Device

1.The work at the site begins with the installation

of Mooring Device. The structure of the device,

which is comprised of a jacket type dolphin,

piles and fenders, is similar to that used

commonly in oil facilities offshore, and the

    installation is done likewise.

    16/31

    Step4:

Mooring of Unit and Joining of Units

1.The first unit transported to the site is moored to

the mooring device. The next unit transported

successively is joined to the first one.

    Effects on Mega Float

1.Influence of Fluttering of Mega Float

    2. Effect and Control Of Drifting

    3.Earthquake Effect

    20/31

Influence of Fluttering of Mega Float

1.Since it is huge, fluttering of waves does not

    have any impact.

2.Since it is made of steel its flexible like spring

3.As the skyscraper absorbs the seismic energy by

its flexibility, Mega-Float absorbs the energy of

    waves by its flexibility

    Effect and Control Of Drifting

1.A structure called Dolphin is used to fix the

    Mega Float at a place.

2.Its fixed into position by piling to Seabed.

3.Rubber fender is provided between floating

structure and dolphin so that it receives the

    drifting force gently.

    Earthquake Effect

1.Floating on the sea, moored to dolphin hence

does not get movement by earthquake

2.Huge structure does not touch the sea bed

directly since it is fixed to seabed by piling,

hence it can resist the earthquake effect

    CONCLUSION

1.VLFS is a unique concept of ocean structures.

2.VLFS requires massive investment of resources and is considered as a

    mega project.

3.Technology utilized in the project must be well proven or reliable to

    reduce risk of investment.

    4. VLFS, the reader may refer to a large body of references

given in a recent literature survey paper by Watanabe et

    al.
