THE IMPORTANCE
Before, During, and After reading strategies are important for several reasons, but the main
goal is to enhance reading comprehension skills.
These strategies will increase student’s
awareness of the text and develop habits that will make them proficient
readers.

Before Reading
The “Before” reading period is vital. This time is so important because it can establish how the
student understand the text as a whole. This is when teachers activate prior knowledge,
engage the reader, and begin to use strategies such as, frontloading.
The next slide will present some Before Reading strategies that can be used with students for
nonfiction text.

During Reading
Now that the student is warmed up. It is now time for the student to interact with the text. Students will now look for things like the main idea and supporting details. Students will also
learn and manipulate new vocabulary.

STOP & THINK!During reading it is really important to understand what you are reading. Students should
stop and reread or play back the
details of the text to check for
understanding.

After Reading
Lastly, after reading students are basically summarizing. Understanding the text and putting it into their own words. This is also a great time
to connect ideas and compare information.

REFLECTING
After reading it is important for students to reflect on what was read.
This will allow them to better understand or even visualize the text.
Reflecting is an important and effective strategy.
