Our Environmental PolicyOur raw materials – our productsWe at Lenzing Plastics are fully aware of our responsibility in dealing with raw materials. Our products are indispensable in modern life.

The economical use of raw ma-terials and resources and also the avoidance of waste products or the full reintegration into the raw material cycle are of utmost importance to us. For example, we re-granulate the waste in the film extrusion and return it to the process.

We are continually working on improving our energy efficien-cy and also the environmental compatibility of our products and processes: For example, our regenerative post-combus-tion units help reduce the gas consumption significantly.

We act environmentally, eco-nomically and socially minded. From our point of view, only the simultaneous implementation of all three aspects guarantee sus-tainable progress.

We save energy20% of the total annual volume of plastic produced in Europe is used in the building industry.A large portion of which is used in the insulation of buildings. It can be said that the total energy required to produce the insulation material for a single family house is already saved in the first year. In addition, pipework, window frames and similar are also made out of plastic.

We protect productsStrong and robust but at the same time flexible, light, impermeable and easy to sterilize: Plastics possess all these attributes.

This is why plastics are ideal for all sorts of packaging. Plastics prolong the shelf life of products (for example foodstuffs) and protects against damage, for example in electronic equipment. Although more than 50% of all goods in Europe are packaged in plastic, this only amounts to a total of 17% of the total weight of packaging in Europe. Plastic therefore reduces transport costs.

We save livesSpecial synthetic materials save lives: Whether as artificial heart valves, im-plants or surgical suture material – PTFE because of its unique properties, is the only material available which is biologically compatible in this field of medical products. Amongst other things, Lenzing Plastics supplies 100% pure PTFE yarns which are produced in accordance to ISO 13485 suitable for me-dical applications.

We reduce CO2 in mobilityA car emits 20kg less CO2 during service life for every kilo attained in weight reduction. This is why plastic is used: The same car part can weigh up to 80% less if made out of plastic.

TechnologiesPlastics properly processed Competence in the processing of polyolefins and PTFE

Extrusion coating/laminationOur (CO) extrusion coating units can coat roll format materi-als up to a width of 2,3m with a plastic coating. It is possible to laminate several substrates with this process.

The incorporation of aluminium, multi-layered lattice, flame retardant, UV-stabilisers, etc. are daily routine for us.

Thermo-bondingUsing two heated calender rolls as the heart of this techno-logy, multi-layer laminates can be produced with a width of over 3m, whereby a single colour print can be applied in-line. Here non-woven materials with various membranes or films of the same raw material are joined using high pressure and temperature without additional use of an adhesive.

Adhesive LaminationUsing a solvent-based mixed adhesive, our unit can join substrates up to a width of 1,6m. Because of this and our comprehensive know-how using adhesives, we are able to produce multi-layer laminates (at the moment up to 14 lay-ers) according to client specification.

Hot melt technologyThrough the application of high-quality hot-melt adhesives a bonding of different substrates to a width of over 3m can be achieved. The machine has a duplex-application unit, which allows the bonding of four materials in one production step. In addition, an in-line printer ensures highest efficiency in the production process.

Tape extrusionPlastic tapes can be used in numerous ways. In order to find the perfect tape for every situation, we are specialised in the blown-, cast-, and water-bath technologies and produce mono-axially stretched tapes. This results in high ultimate tensile strength and exact colour accuracy.

Weaving millWeaving is one of the oldest techniques of mankind. As one of the few remaining weavers in Central Europe we are specialised, using modern technology, in the production of synthetic fabric. We can offer plain weave as well as gauze fabric.

Film extrusionWith our co-extrusion cast- and blown film units high-strength, made-to-measure PE- and PP-films can be produced. Se-veral units are equipped with an in-line MDO (possibility of highly-stretching these films in an axial direction). Special pro-ducts with flame retardants, coloured films, UV-protected films and other products with additives can be produced.

Cutting to size/Adhesive tape applicationDifferent roll lengths, roll diameters, sleeve core diameter and roll weights can be produced on various units as required quickly and flexibly. Especially with roofing rolls and vapour barriers we can incorporate, if requested by the client, an adhesive tape to facilitate application.

CuttingOur cutting units allow the part-use production of films, la-minates, glass-fabric laminates/composites and other rein-forced products. Furthermore we can also offer cross-wound products in cut widths up to 35mm, a width of up to 320mm and a maximum outer diameter of 400mm.

Printing unitsWe have an in-line printing unit as well as an off-line colour flexographic printing unit, in order to be able to produce every product exactly to client specifications. Whether logos, grid/pattern, notes or printed on the entire surface, we print tapes from a width of 3mm upwards for cables and ropes.

FinishingEmbossing / perforating / varnishing / metallizing / formats. To round off our extensive technology portfolio we can offer a comprehensive range of finishing techniques in cooperation with our long-standing partners for individual client product solutions.

Further Processing PossibilitiesIn order to provide our clients with complete solutions, we have a number of further processing technologies which can be applied on site.

Peel Production – PressingPTFE in powder form is pressed into a block shape. The pressing process should take place slowly, evenly and cont-inually –without interruption. After a slow decompression the block is stored for a certain length of time in order to allow stress equalisation.

Peel Production – StretchingA cylindrical block is rotated and separate filaments are peeled off with a peeling-cutting tool. In the same process step the filaments are stretched to a multiple of their origi-nal length. After stretching, the filament bundles are coated, dried and wound.

Paste-extrusion – StretchingFor certain applications the dried films are mono-axially stret-ched. The films are stretched in rolling direction over two roller systems each one turning at different speeds. The ma-terial becomes highly porous through this process. Films or cut tapes are sintered and stretched to achieve highly tensile films, tapes or yarns.

Peel Production – SinteringAfter pressing, the blocks undergo a defined sintering pro-cess. This sintering is carried out in sintering furnaces fol-lowing individual sintering programmes. After exceeding the crystallisation melting point, the PTFE changes into the amorphous state and the previously pressed powder par-ticles sinter into a homogenous structure.

Paste-extrusion – ExtrudingPTFE in powder form is mixed with lubricating agents and becomes a paste. The paste is extruded under pressure th-rough a jet using a ram extruder. The resulting cord is rolled over a calender roll to form a film. The film is then dried and wound.

Paste-extrusion – CustomizingIn order to satisfy the diversity of our clients requirements, our products can be finished to request. For this we use va-rious coiling- and winding technologies and special finishing steps such as turning, twisting, or fibrillating.

LaboratoryJust to be sure – a good feelingOur laboratory team is on duty 24 hours daily in order to ensure that our clients are constantly supplied with highest quality products. Whether an accompanying quality control or an incoming raw material inspection, our highly qualified and motivated team want to be absolutely sure.

Constant Production TestingIncoming Raw Material Inspection

The ongoing production is tested according to set plans in the laboratory for defined characteristics, dependent on the product type and the client-speci-fic specifications. The tests can range from simple visual checks right up to measuring mechanical properties such as tensile strength and strain or testing the moisture- and thermal resistance of a material. All parameters determined are archived together with the respective product samples and are available if required.

Apart from the continual quality control, the laboratory is also responsible for the inco-ming raw material inspection.

Only perfect raw materials and pre-ma-terials guarantee highest quality finished products.

Research & DevelopmentGo Small – Think BigResearch and development at Lenzing Plastics have always been of ultimate importance and are an essential part of our company. Our in-house pilot plant centre is the core of this strategy.

MeasuringDevelopmentBasically, all process technologies for production are provi-ded here on a smaller scale. This means that all manufactu-ring steps can be simulated on a small scale.The advantages are obvious: reduced amount of raw mate-rials with flexible capacities independent of the ongoing pro-duction enables maximum results. This means quick and precise implementation of develop-ment processes for our clients. First product samples for product testing can be produced and made available for our clients in a very short time.

Apart from the various production processes in miniature for-mat, the pilot plant also features many different measuring- and testing instruments in order to be able to check every new development thoroughly. These tests, carried out from the beginning of the development, are the basis for the high quality of our products. Apart from the numerous standard testing methods we also have the additional possibility of ar-tificially ageing products with a suitable process. In this way we can simulate the changes during the whole life cycle of a material.

ResearchLenzing Plastics GmbH & Co KG works in cooperation with the Johannes Kepler University Linz and the University of Leoben.Practice-relevant research is carried out and followed up together with the professors and students. Our company happily accompanies and supports Bachelor- and Master Theses regularly. The knowledge gained supports us in the new development of products and secures our technical progress.
