Dear Madam, Dear Sir, Dear Alumni,

As you may already know Ernest Solvay did not only found the “Solvay Schools”, he also created other institutes (sociology, chemistry, physiology) and launched in 1911 international congresses in the fields of physics and chemistry gathering leading figures and one or more Nobel Prize winners in these disciplines.

Back in 2005 I suggested to Solvay Schools Alumni to organize such events in the fields of business. Today you are attending our fourth edition.

Numerous objectives are met through our congresses amongst which:

- to highlight Solvay Schools Alumni’s capacity to gather both internationally renowned speakers and business related individuals in Brussels, capital of Europe;

- to bear high the colours of our Schools and of their faculty;

- to address topics that link business, economy and society, hence that influence the business as well as our politics;

this while generating a financial surplus that is split between the funding of :

- the association which itself finances a chair at the schools level as well as supports many of their activities always looking at empowering the Alumni network;

- our endowment that will finance events organized in partnership between our association and the schools, strictly dedicated to the teaching of business, management and economics.

I am proud and profoundly happy to report that this congress also gave Solvay Schools Alumni the opportunity to offer both Schools’ bachelor students (in two different sessions due to their high number) a lecture by Professor Ch. PISSARIDES on the same theme as the congress: “Flexibility and the future of work in Europe” (topic that could have been enlarged by linking flexibility and the future of Europe altogether since one could believe Europe has to reengineer and free, untangle itself…).

This is what Alumni association are partly made for: support their Schools, offer their students moments of exception, give back to society… Not forgetting to maintain the Solvay Schools Alumni spirit, to reinforce the Solvay Schools and their Alumni network, encouraging them to create a virtuous circle to the benefit of all parties and society.

In this regard it is essential that our congresses not only gather Alumni but as many people coming from other horizons as possible. It is the case again today which offers me the opportunity to thank all of you warmly for your presence.

Last, but not least, it is my honour and pleasure, on behalf of our association to thank our speakers Joaquín ALMUNIA, Sharan BURROW, Sergio MARCHIONNE, Christopher PISSARIDES as well as our colleagues, professors Luc HENS and André SAPIR .

I am already looking forward to seeing you again in late 2014 for our next congress.

Thankfully, friendly and sincerely yours,

gilles SAmyn, Chairman

Special thanks:

- to the team of volunteers without whom this congress simply would not have happened : thanks to Marie, Laetitia, Alexandra, Aurélie, Fabienne, Myriam, Nicolas, Xavier and Michaël;

- to the sponsors whose names appear at the back of this brochure for their generous support.

Dear Madam, Dear Sir, Dear Alumni,

It is our great pleasure to be part of and contribute to this second big congress, organized by you as SolvAy SchoolS Alumni. This event is unique in Belgium, not only because of the excellence of the program and its speakers, but even more so because it is initiated and set up almost completely by our Alumni association. Of course, this happens in close and friendly collaboration with the two Solvay Schools, from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Université Libre de Bruxelles. We as deans of these two schools are proud to count on such dynamic and ambitious Alumni.

We thank in particular the outstanding Chairman of our Alumni association gilles Samyn. We will surely miss Gilles when he retires as Chairman in the near future. Gilles is the inspirator of the idea to organize on a regular basis this type of high-level scientific meetings, in the spirit of our founder ernest Solvay who in the first part of last century brought to Brussels scientific stars like Albert Einstein and Marie Curie. It is this inspiration that has made possible the presence today with us of an extremely distinguished set of international speakers. We are extremely grateful for their presence and their decisive contribution to this congress. We are also extremely grateful to you who, individuals as well as guests of corporations have made sure to be part of our audience today.

We are also particularly pleased with this event because it corresponds so well to the values our Schools want to aim for: excellence, relevance, breadth and internationalization. Excellence is obvious when one looks at the quality of our international speakers. Relevance is also obvious: flexibility of work is at the core of today’s discussions on the future competitive position of Belgium and Europe in a globalized environment. Flexibility of work and its consequences can also only be understood in a multidimensional and international perspective, and this is why a broad set of experts from different disciplines and countries has been mobilized in order to analyze the interaction between its various facets: governance, regulation and management.

Finally, this congress is a reminder of the value of unity: just like the Alumni association is stronger thanks to its inclusion of both Solvay ULB and VUB graduates, so do our Schools benefit from a strong cooperation, in teaching as well as in research projects. It is our firm intention to keep developing them in the future, and we know we can count on support: Many, many thanks for your continuing precious help!

Sergio mArchionneBorn in Italy, raised and educated in Canada, Sergio Marchionne is Chairman and CEO of Chrysler Group LLC and CEO of Fiat S.p.A, as well as Chairman of Fiat Industrial S.p.A. and CNH Global N.V. Mr. Marchionne has dual Canadian–Italian citizenship and an eclectic education – a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Philosophy, in addition to degrees in Law and Commerce. Member of the Board of Fiat S.p.A. since May 2003, he was ap-pointed CEO in June 2004, delivering one of the auto industry’s fastest turnarounds, returning the Italian group to profitability in a period of less than two years. In June 2009, he took the helm at the newly formed Chrysler Group, when the automaker emerged from Chapter 11. Under his leadership, the company has re-turned to profitability and reintroduced the Fiat brand to North America after an absence of almost a quarter of a century. With a career that has spanned both sides of the Atlantic, Sergio Marchionne is now facing one of his greatest professional challenges: to achieve the full and successful integration of Fiat and Chrysler Group, combining an American company and an Italian com-pany to create a multi-national organization that oper-ates in more than 120 countries and employs more than 190,000 people. Mr. Marchionne has also been elected President of the Board of Directors of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) for 2012. He is a member of the Board of Philip Morris International Inc. and of the Board of the Peterson Institute for International Economics as well as Chairman of the Italian Branch of the Council for the United States and Italy.

In 2005 he became the first European economist to win the IZA Prize in Labor Economics and in 2010 he won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for his analysis of markets with search frictions. His book Equilibrium Unemployment Theory, now in its second edition, is a standard reference in the economics of unemploy-ment. He has also been a consultant on employment policy and other labour issues for the World Bank, the European Commission, the Bank of England and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
