Gone was the annual parade and in its place was the “World Record Hopscotch Event”. More than 200 students, faculty, staff, and community members turned out to show- case their hopscotch skills. There were several other events such as the new Party at the Pump Track featuring cycling and disc golf competitions, bonfire with fireworks, dance, mud football, and, of course, the football game which was broadcasted live on CBS Sports. Environmental Center On Thursday, October 23rd, the FLC En-

vironmental Center hosted its 13th An-

nual REEL Environmental Film Experi-

ence. This event served to raise funds

for the EC, provide our campus & com-

munity with an opportunity to learn

about regional water challenges & op-

portunities, showcase the EC’s efforts in

supporting our community, and pro-

vide opportunities for engaging in envi-

ronmental discussion.

The highlight of this year’s REEL—a

screening of the award-winning docu-

mentary, DamNation, was enthusiasti-

cally received by the 400+ individuals

who attended. Following the movie,

Ben Knight, the film’s director, and sev-

eral regional water experts were apart

of a moderated panel discussion. The

panel addressed questions pertaining

to regional water issues ranging from

supply-and-demand, to trans-mountain

diversions, to the pros and cons of dam

removal in the arid Southwest.

National Collegiate Leadership Conference

Each year, The Leadership Center sponsors several students to at-tend the National Collegiate Leadership Conference (NCLC) hosted by the University of Arizona. NCLC is a student-run conference that is attended by over 600 participants from around the country. This conference focuses on the idea that service, social justice, and lead-ership are all connected. There are over 80 interactive workshops and motivational speakers to help students create change in their organizations and communities. Students will also get a chance to engage in some community service while at the conference, which will take place February 13th—15th, 2015.

If you are interested in representing Fort Lewis College at NCLC, please complete the

application that can be found on the Leader-ship Center website. All applications are due

Friday, November 14th at 5pm.

Student Wellness Initiatives Thursday, November 20th is the American Cancer Society’s annual Great American Smokeout, whose goal is to encourage smok-ers to quit for one whole day, to make a plan to quit in the near future, or to at least try to cut down their smoking. Tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the United States, yet about 43.8 million Americans still smoke cigarettes - nearly 1 in every 5 adults. Quit-ting, even for a day, is an important step to-wards a healthier life. Look for us in the Stu-dent Union on 11/20 for resources!

We would like to thank all who supported our third annual Paint Your Pinky Nail Purple campaign in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month! We painted over 200 nails, accepted 110 signa-tures in a pledge against domestic violence, and expanded our cam-paign by providing purple wristbands for the FLC Football team to wear at the Homecoming game on Oct 16th. Remember, if you or someone you know is in a domestic violence situation and may need help, please contact Alternative Horizons at 970.247.9619.
