Socrates said, “Know thyself.” Flawless leaders know themselves flawlessly. It is the combination of truth and acceptance, an accurate view of the darkness as well as the light.

Accountability is NOT enforcing your will on another’s behavior; that is tyranny. Accountability is being responsible for our choices and responses, the realization that we are cause – not effect, the preemption of reaction with conscious considered commitment, the ownership of our part in the afflictions about which we complain.

Tim Galway’s research with tennis professionals proves that in order for humans to learn, adapt, and lead in constantly changing environments, they must accept themselves for who they actually are, not who they think they are or who they aspire to be. This level of effectiveness is impossible without embracing feedback and disagreement. When we stop learning and adapting, we fail. To lead, we must be the change we want to see in others.

Authentic humility is the bedrock essence of a flawless leader. However strenuously we strive for relevance, we are rarely really relevant.
