14.1 Types of simple machines
What are the different types of simple machines?
Our muscles help us to do work by providing the forces needed. The force we apply to do work is called the effort. The object the effort moves or overcomes is called the load.
We cannot lift a load if it is too heavy. We need machines to help us. Machines make work easier and faster to do. However, it does not reduce the amount of work that we actually do.
Machines can be big or small, simple or complex. A simple machine generally has only one moving part.
When we put simple machines together, they become a complex machine. An areoplane is an example of a complex machine made up of many simple machines.
Types of simple machines include the lever, pulley, wheel and axle, inclined plane and gears.
Simple machines make work easier by performing one or more of the following functions:
Multiplying force.• Multiplying speed.• Changing the direction.•
