Activity Guide: Carmen Morales
The music session is divided in
four parts. Each part will be focused in
one of the musical aspects of flamenco
music. The last one (4. Flamenco
Ensemble) will be a little improvisation
round with the participants playing by
themselves flamenco music using thetools that they’ve learned in the
previous parts of the session.
1. Flamenco Rhythm.Learning the basic flamenco’s rhythms:
1. Soleá2. Alegría3. Bulería
Theory + Practice (Clapping and withFlamenco percussion). The theory part will bevery easy only the basics terms to understandhow flamenco rhythm is constructed and howto play it. We won’t use music notation, onlydiagrams to make it easier. The practice will bethe very important part of this part. Theassistant will play the rhythms clapping andwith percussion instruments, always inside ofthe flamenco typical timbre.
2. Flamenco InstrumentsPercussion instruments
Flamenco GuitarFlamenco Piano
In this second part, participants will seeand touch the most typical instruments fromflamenco music. They will learn how they are
built and how to play it (in the most simpleway). Then they will listen songs from theprincipal flamenco artists and recognize thisinstruments inside the music.
3. Flamenco Harmony
We will learn some basics scales andchords progressions to play flamenco musicon the piano. Each participant will do whatthey can, always inside their musicals skillswith the instrument. In this part we will use alittle bit of music notation, but also will be adiagram to help those who don’t know musicnotation so well, so everyone will be able toplay it.
4. Flamenco Ensemble
We will do an flamenco improvisation
round playing with the instruments that eachperson wants (piano, percussion or clapping)the chords progressions will be played by theguide of the activity (Carmen) to help to keepthe round on and on. The purpose of thisactivity is to feel what is one of the principal
roots of flamenco: play together and havingfun.
