In collaboration with choreographer and dancer Antonio Gades, he introduced the art form to a wider audience in the eighties with his flamenco film trilogy Blood Wedding (1981), Carmen (1983), and El Amor Brujo (1986). Flamenco Flamenco is a sequel to his 1995 film titled Flamenco, and includes 21 dance and musical performances by some of the greatest living masters and young artists today. In addition to the talent and creativity of the artists, Saura uses paintings by Picasso, Goya and Klimt as backdrops, and cinematographer Storaro magnificently uses color and light for maximum effect. The film was shot at the 1992 World Expo Pavillion in Sevilla. Saura uses the beauty of the art form, color and light, and backdrops as the central narrative. There are no subtitles or lyric translations, only music and dance pieces that cover traditional and innovative styles. There are 10 artists in the film who have performed for previous editions of the Flamenco Arts Festival, including this year’s featured artist, Patricia Guerrero (Sequence #13). Carlos Saura Carlos Saura was born in 1932 and grew up in Madrid where he studied film, photography and journalism. He studied film at the Cinematographic Society and Research Institute, where he completed his degree in 1957. Saura began teaching and directing feature films at the Institute, and eventually becoming director of the Institute itself. His early work explored Spanish society and politics under Franco and was often censored. He was relieved from his post at the Institute for political reasons. From 1957 to the present, he has directed over 40 feature and short films, won numerous awards nationally and internationally for best actor, best director, and best film; and was nominated for an Academy Award for his films Tango and Carmen.
