Howdy Penners and Sorters,

The staff has been BUSY! They barely finished hosting just under 1,000 teams at the Coors Challenge before moving the office, lock, stock, and barrel to our new location in Granbury, Texas. The new location gives them a lot more room and costs less than our old place. They seem to be settled in and it’s business as usual. The new contact information is:

For those of you that were at the Coors Challenge you know about the scare we had with the potential exposure of our horses to the EHV 1 virus. As it turns out none of the horses in question tested positive. This out break has been effec-tively controlled by state quarantines and voluntary movement restrictions. In the next few months, we will see sporadic cases of EHV 1 diagnosed around the country primarily due to heightened awareness of the disease and easier testing procedures. As your President and as an animal health professional I appreciate everyone’s cooperation in this time of potential crisis.

The Mississippi Hot Streak in Tunica is just around the corner. Start making your plans to come on down and have a hot time in the Delta with David Rainey and all the “cuzzens”. He tells me everything has dried out, the casinos are open, and the show should be great.

Remember, it’s not about the wins you take, it’s about the friends you make. See you soon!

The exciting Quick Draw Penning on Saturday featured 25 of the top riders in the sport. The powerhouse team of Louie Saggione, Sarah Lesh and Jared Lesh rode away with the win in the average, taking home their share of the more than $7,800.00 in prize money offered. With this win, the trio all securely firmed their lock within the top ten #7 rated riders in the world.

USTPA’s international riders also had a strong showing in Fort Worth, proving again their ability to meet the challenges of the foreign environment and rise to the top. A unique showdown happened in the battle for the average in the #9 as the team of Luis Ignacio Gonzalez Diaz, Jose Gregorio Diaz Barreiro and Francisco and the team of Homero Raul Diaz Umanes, Luis Ignacio Gonzalez Diaz and Jose Gregorio Diaz Barreiro were at a dead tie. In the end, Luis Ignacio Gonzalez Diaz, Jose Gregorio Diaz Barreiro and Francisco Orosco took the buckles back to Venezuela with a close win. Tabatha Alejandra Guillen Perez De Jorge, Renato Jorge Suarez and Maria Susana Celis walked away with 7th place among the 128 teams in the #9 Penning.

The Venezuela machine continued to roll into the #5/#3 Incentive Penning. Rafael Vicente Pares Diaz, Carlos Enrique Eraso Anglade and Gustavo Neumaier emerged as the average

winners from among 100 teams competing in the #5 Penning. They claimed their share of the more than $9,800.00 in prize money.

Also consistently ranking among the top at the show; TJ Heywood won both the buckles in the #13 Penning and the #3 Sorting, Elle Chase won the buckles in the Junior Youth Penning and the Junior Youth Sorting and younger brother Levi Chase won the buckles in the Junior Youth Penning and Senior Youth Sorting. The Lesh’s were also busy securing their leadership in the sports with Sarah Lesh, Jared Lesh and Jordan Lesh taking home two wins each.

With a final purse of more than $123,000.00 away in Fort Worth over the three-day event, the Coors Challenge proved again to be one of the most exciting competitions in the sports of Team Penning and Ranch Sorting. The USTPA would like to thank Larry Anfin, President of Coors Distributing in Fort Worth for his continued support of this show and our association. We are proud to count Coors among our best sponsors.

Motivated. Competitive. Caring. These are some words that describe 2010 USTPA youth scholarship fund winner, Codi

Kee, of Middleton, Tennessee. Codi is a straight A honor roll student, a member of the Beta Club and the FCA

(Fellowship of Christian Athletes), a softball player, and a future mechanical

engineering student who will be attending Mississippi State in the fall for her

freshman year. But most of all, Codi is a horsewoman who fell in love with

the sport of team penning and ranch sorting about four years ago and

never looked back.

“Team penning and sorting have inspired my life in many ways. I have met many new wonderful people, and I have made some wonderful friends. I’ve learned the importance of perseverance, trust, and patience.” While all of these skills carry over into her school and home life, Codi claims that pa-tience is the hardest skill to master, and one that she continues to work on every day. “Patience does not run in my family,” she explains with a laugh. But luckily, through hard work and lots of hours in the saddle, Codi has learned to master her chosen sport and rise to the top of her game by claiming the 2010 Youth World Champion title in ranch sorting.

Her quest to win started in 2007 when her family decided to step into the horse world. Her dad had prior experience as a team roper, and the family knew that they wanted to be-

come involved in the same type of rid-ing discipline; however, roping was not a popular sport in their area. The Kee

family soon discovered several local team penning and sorting events were

being held in their vicinity and they jumped in with both feet!

Codi started out riding in the USTPA by borrowing a twelve year old AQHA gelding named “Bay” from David Rainey, past

USTPA President. The duo clicked, and Codi’s parent’s

purchased the gelding for her to compete on exclu-sively. Not only did they win the World Champion

title in youth ranch sort-ing, but Codi also placed eighth

in team penning at the same event! Codi could only find one word to sum up her equine partner: “Awesome.” She gives the majority of the credit

for her success to Bay, along with the wealth of experience he had in both team penning and sort-ing before his purchase by the Kee’s. When asked, she talked about the trust she has built up with the gelding over the past several years. She knows

that when she cues him he will immediately respond, and she relies on him to

Chet started making saddles in 1963 and opened a custom shop in 1966 in Desoto, Texas. In 1974

he moved to San Angelo, Texas. We moved to Chattanooga in 1990 and have had a shop there for 20 years. We are a custom shop making cutting and penning saddles.

We use 2 tree companies, Bowden Brand, rawhide covered trees and Darrel Slinkard’s fiberglass

covered trees that have a center ride seat. We designed a little different type rigging, the bulk of the rigging is in the cutaway reducing the rigging bulk and designed where you get maximum leg movement, with the close contact feel.

help her through those moments where her nerves take over. Codi says, “Sometimes I get nervous and forget everything I know. It’s at those times when I have to take a deep breath and just trust my instincts.”

When asked who inspired her most in both her horse and home life, Codi answered without hesitation that it was her father. “He has taught me the importance of hard work, responsibility, good character, and the importance of living for God. He never does anything halfway.” Codi’s dad has shaped her into the hard-working young woman that she has become, and Codi knows that her love of horses definitely comes from him. “I am close to him because we have a lot in common. We share the same interests and have the same point of view in most

areas. He is the reason I am the person I am today.” Nick Mills, Region 11 Director, comments that Codi can always be counted on to help with everything from running the gate, to feeding and watering cattle at the events; and that she always wears a smile no matter what the task is that befalls her. She also takes family to heart, and realizes that being the oldest child lends itself to setting an example. “Even if I’m not told to do something, it is my responsibility to make sure that it gets done if my dad isn’t there to oversee it,” she says, “I take responsibility for all of my actions, and I realize that ev-erything I do is being watched by my little sister and brother.” Codi truly has found herself in her family, religion, and love of horses; and she encourages everyone to not take anything for granted.

Codi would like to urge everyone to attend a USTPA event near them and discover the people and experiences that she has had the opportunity to live. She explained that she is always amazed and delighted at the level of encouragement from all of the participants, especially towards the new exhibitors. She always strives to be an ambassador of the sport to newcomers, and treats people as warmly as folks treated her when she first began penning and sorting. Her one piece of advice for any-one starting out is, “Don’t give up. The cows will not always cooperate, so the best thing to do is to regroup and try again.” Codi plans to continue team penning and sorting throughout her college years, in addition to exploring their rodeo program.

A Piece of HeavenBy Marianne Kent

The first time I went to Diamond K Arena in Austinville, Virginia, I was awe-struck by the beauty surrounding me. It was in June 2008. As I got out of the car, I was literally mesmerized. I just stood there by the arena and stared at the mountains on both sides of the valley, cattle grazing in lush, green pastures, a country road that wound it's way from the arena to the zig-zag curve by the Keith family business and eventually arriving at Larry & Tammy Keith's little homestead where they've raised their sons Tanner & Connor. I was convinced that this part of Virginia was actually a part of heaven that God had purposely set right there in the southwest corner of Virginia. I literally had to nudge myself to break the trance. I was here to work!

So when I had the opportunity to go back there in April 2011 for a USTPA team penning and ranch sorting, Region 8 secretary Tami Bentley didn't have to ask me twice if I could fill in for her. I couldn't say "Yes!" fast enough.

Levi, Marcus, and Nicholas (our sons) loaded the trailer with my husband

Muray's saddles, bridles, blankets, feed & water buckets, 2 bags of feed, 2 bales of hay, and a new spare tire on the front of the trailer (which came in real handy in South Carolina!). With health papers & Coggins in the notebook on the seat beside me, "Lacey" and "Rabbit" in the trailer behind me, I set off Thursday morning in Steven's truck for my eleven hour trip to Diamond K Arena.

Beth Shaw from Conesus, New York and I were the only ones around on Friday morning when show promoter Larry Keith said, "Hey, you want to see something really pretty?" So we climbed in the feed truck (that wasn't the pretty part) and went to two different pastures to feed the heifers and steers. Yep, it was all still a part of heaven that God had placed here. Absolutely beautiful.

It was a nice show that weekend. It wasn't the biggest show I've ever worked. But I've always said, "It's better to have a QUALITY show instead of a quantity show." Two-hundred-ninety-six teams rode on conditioned cattle in an arena with the best footing I have ever seen at a show. Don't just take my word for the that. it was the contestants from Canada, CT, NY, PA, NJ, NC, VA & FL that were happy and pleased from Friday night's Jackpot team penning to the last class of the weekend,

the #3 sorting on Sunday afternoon.

With judges Pam Bradshaw and Jimmy Weise, Sarah Eavers in the announcer's booth, and of course the hardworking cattle guys, we kept the show moving at an even pace. A picnic supper of grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, along with salads and cakes provided to everyone by the Keith family capped off the full day of competing on Saturday. Mother Nature made a little bit of commotion Sunday morning with thunder and lightning. But when she figured out that people weren't leaving until they had sorted, she backed off and it was another great day at the Diamond K!

There were a couple of "hiccups" that weekend: when Cotton made a trip to the ER for his injured hand, and when Marsha Hunt and her horse went in 2 different directions- the horse went up, she went down. All-in-all, God's blessings were evident that weekend with the beauty surrounding Austinville, the camaraderie and sportsmanship of the contestants, the cunningness of the cattle trying to outwit the athleticism of the horses and the knowledge of the riders, and the hospitality of The Keith Family at Diamond K Arena.

About Monroe and West Monroe, Louisiana

The Place Where People Meet

Visit Monroe-West Monroe, the place where people meet. Conveniently located on I-20 between Jackson and Shreveport, we offer great shopping, food and fun for the whole family.

Take a stroll through Antique Alley. Southern Living calls this “a shopaholic’s delight.” You’ll find blocks of unique stores in beautiful downtown

West Monroe offering everything from home decor, jewelry, clothing, antiques, art and more. Visit Imperial Galleries for the Lamp Berger, an aromatic masterpiece. Check out the original T-shirt designs at Mojo’s Boutique.

Continue your shopping adventure at Pecanland Mall, North Louisiana’s largest shopping mall. Browse through over 100 stores like Belk, Dillards, Charlotte Russe, Club Libby Lu, and Forever 21 and take a ride on the 2-story carousel. In Pecanland Plaza, you’ll also find Kohl’s, Best Buy, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond and TJ Maxx.

The landscape of Monroe-West Monroe is dotted with chic boutiques. Clothing shops, like Herringstone’s, Kim’s Kloset, Scarlet, Cute & Sassy, and K-Sera, offer the trendiest styles in clothing and accessories for women, men and children. Furniture and home décor shops, like Paul Michael Company and Rock-A-Bye Baby, offer everything you need to furnish your home including home accessories, lighting, bedding and more.

Hungry? Our food is full of traditional Southern comfort that is good for the soul. We have over 70 locally owned, distinct restaurants each offering a mouth-watering taste of true North Louisiana cuisine. Choose from menus offering fried chicken, smothered pork chops, black-eyed peas, Catfish DeSiard, gumbo, po-boys, sweet potatoes, hotwater cornbread, homemade cakes, pies and more. Whether dining on the water or at a plate lunch diner, you are sure to be satisfied.

Next, stop in and visit our unique area attractions. The Biedenharn Museum & Gardens is the family home of Joseph Biedenharn, first bottler of Coca-Cola. Tour the magnificent home and gardens and the Bible Museum, full of rare Bibles and religious artifacts. Then take a step back in time to the new Coke Museum and have an ice cold, glass-bottle Coke for just a nickel.

“Fly” over to the Chennault Aviation and Military Museum of Louisiana, housed in the last standing building of the Selman Field Army Corps Navigation School. This school trained over 15,000 navigators during World War II. The museum also tells the tale of General Claire Chennault, for who the museum is named, and his Flying Tigers. This squadron is known for preventing the Japanese from taking over China in World War II. Also, learn the beginnings of Delta Airlines in Monroe and follow the stories of other local heroes.

Finish your look around Monroe-West Monroe and experience raw, untouched nature at Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Walking trails, a pier over the bayou and a birding blind bring you right into the natural habitats of North Louisiana wildlife. The beautiful lake is studded with picturesque cypress and tupelo trees. On-site canoe rental is available for those who want that up-close experience.

Plan your next getaway in the place where people meet. Call us at 800-843-1872 or visit

Chaplain Corner

Summertime by Margaret McLain

Sponsored by Cowboys for Christ

33

As I write this first of the summer article on May 2nd, Bin Laden is dead, spring tornadoes have devastated many people’s lives, and what will come tomorrow is much unknown. One thing I do know is found in Proverbs 18:10-12: “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. The wealth of the rich is their fortified city; they imagine it an unscalable wall. Before his downfall, a man’s heart is proud, but humility comes before honor.”

While researching the very topic of summertime, I came across a couple of very old song lyrics that made me reflect on how life has changed just over my lifetime. I can remember the 1958 song by the Jamies although I didn’t recall the group’s name. How different from the mindset today with so many threats of terror attacks and weather patterns that make one wonder if these are the end-times spoken of in the Bible.

Jesus said “And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows Matthew 24:6-8.

Thankfully, Jesus also says in

Matthew 24:13 “But he who endures to the end shall be saved.” What assurance to those who have put their faith and trust in Jesus as Savior and Lord knowing that He is indeed a strong tower that can withstand anything and anyone even Satan himself.

So what should we be doing? Sing the Jamies song or an even older song by George Gershwin that says “summertime and the livin’ is easy; fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high.” By the way, as much as I do enjoy Gershwin, he was before my time. The Jamies’ song, for those of you who remember, told us to ditch those books and dirty teachers’ looks to paraphrase. Go swimming, to a dance, forget those history and geography books. Then the chorus was “It’s time to head straight for them hills; it’s time to live and have some thrills; come along and have a ball; a regular free for all; It’s summertime, summertime, sum sum summertime, summertime.”

As you can tell, times were much different; students didn’t think too deeply nor were the songs rocket-science. We had some real crazy, nonsensical lyrics in the late 50’s and 60’s as dummy-ditty, do-what, and the like. It was a much less stressful time; at least my world was.

Jesus continues to tell us to look

to Him; lean on His strength (that strong tower), and He will direct our paths. Remember, this world is not our permanent home. It’s just a temporary, stop-off place, before our final destination as well as our final and permanent physical body. Jesus tells us to live life to the fullest and abundantly. John 10:10, “Jesus said, ‘the thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.’” I don’t believe that means oblivious to our permanent future and our temporary purpose here which is not all about us and “ditching school, etc.”

So as we live in these days of much more stress, trouble, tribulation, and hopefully much joy, we must know in Whom we believe, trust, depend, and lean on. Then as we abide in Him, He will give us the courage, drive, freedom, and strength to be all He intended for us to be as well as to accomplish all that He intends for us to do in the days, weeks, months, and years He gives us. I believe He does intend for us to live each one to the fullest but each one is precious.
