With their new Marketing Suite, the Decorative Panels team has brought together all the current thinking in décor in a unique, stylish and relaxing environment - and it’s all at your disposal.

Design is not making beauty,”wrote Louis Kahn, one of themost influential architects of

the mid-20th century. “Beauty emergesfrom selection, affinities, integration, love.”

The newly opened Marketing Suite atDecorative Panels Group has undoubt-edly been a labour of love. Stunning, beautiful, inspired and inspiring, it is awork of art in its own right; an 8,500ft2

temple of design to which customers oldand new have an open invitation. But itis not a sterile environment. Neither is ita museum. It is a place in which toexplore and experiment, make differentselections, create affinities and integratethem into successful furniture designs ofthe future. “The Marketing Suite is ashowcase of everything we can offer,

but not a stale concept,” says GroupMD, Guy Metcalfe. “Here, visitors candevelop designs into reality in an inspira-tional environment. Everything is madefrom our materials. It’s a showcase tothe versatility of our products; a workingtool to help customers find the right tooland partner for their projects.”

The moment you step through theentrance door the first impression takesyour breath away: surrounded by orig-inal design classics, Floss lamps and LeCorbusier armchairs, the Chill Zone is aspace befitting the foyer of the mostupmarket of luxury hotels. Relax afteryour journey. Gather your thoughts. And amid icons of great design, prepareto be inspired.

reflect on the words of Thomas JWatson, the man once dubbed TheWorld’s Greatest Salesman, as you passthrough the Heritage Zone: “Design,”he wrote, “Must reflect the practical andaesthetic in business but above all...good design must primarily servepeople.” The Decorative Panels Grouphas been serving people with gooddesign in one form or other since 1879.The historical timeline of the companyblends seamlessly into an informativeAbout Us zone which concludes with areal time monitor showing productionKPIs from all three DP Group companies.

The DP Library, the DP Virtual Zoneand the Mix & Match Zone are thecreative work centres in the MarketingSuite. Select hard samples from the DPLibrary - the entirety of the DP Décor andDP Specialist ranges are represented andthe latest DP Development Foils arepresented on the walls as you enter theDP Virtual Zone - and take themthrough. On an enormous glass screen, using a state-of-the-art projection system,it’s here that you’ll be able to pull all theelements from the DP Library together, drawing from all the designs availableand displaying them at actual size infully-dressed bedroom, kitchen and livingroom settings. Using interactive touchscreen technology, choose any designfrom the on screen pallet and drop it intoany panel on the furniture set. High glossfinishes, woodgrains, unicolours - thepossibilities to design and modify areendless. Finally, view from any of fourcamera angles, save your design and the

system will print it out along with thepallet of décors you used.

In the Mix & Match Zone, A1 and A3samples of any design available in theDP Décor and DP Specialist ranges maybe chosen and displayed under daylightlighting conditions on a wall mountedtrack system, enabling you to refineyour final choice.

An imaginatively decorated stairwellwhich pays homage to the inspirationbehind DP’s products leads to the firstfloor of the Marketing Suite. Dedicatedto displays of product from all threecompanies in the Group, information oneach may be collected and emailed toyou via an iPad. Here you’ll find displaysof everything from finished furniture, exploded carcases, panel componentsand edging to a Senoplast TopX tunnel. The Be Creative Zone encourages you toexplore further with different finishes, edgebands and hardware - but it’s at theconclusion you’ll find the very latestdevelopments: on raised plinths, futuristic products are presented in anInnovation Zone. The latest generationof décors sits alongside presentations ofnew materials not yet released.

It was Giorgio Armani who once said,“I design for real people. I think of ourcustomers all the time.” That samephilosophy holds true for DecorativePanels Group and nowhere is it moreevident than in the new Marketing Suite. It’s designed for you. Exhibiting at W14 forms an important partof their forward-going strategy fordynamic development in a resurgent

market, according to David Sanders, SalesDirector of Blum UK.

He explained that “the plan for W14 will bemore about how Blum are able to help theirfront-line customers - KBB and cabinet furnituremanufacturers - to plan smart ways forwardwith integrated partnerships with suppliers…rather than focus on products alone.”

At the recent KBB exhibition, one of themost popular and fascinating elements of theBlum display was the “Investing inInnovation” section where two apprenticesfrom Blum Austria’s international flagshiptraining scheme demonstrated theiroutstanding skills to visitors. They showedhow one of the world’s leading furniturefittings and systems manufacturers is able tosecure their future through innovation, training and skills development.

This highly successful aspect of the exhibitwill be replicated at W14 with even further

emphasis. David Sanders said: “The mostimportant question to consider is - will thedesign of that product still work with thecustomer in 10 years? That’s the challenge formanufacturers in the future.”

He continued, “Carrying on from ourhighly successful showing at KBB, W14 willgive us the next high profile opportunity inwhat is our ‘H to H’ (human to human)marketing strategy where we bring not onlyour products, but also our services andrecognised expertise to our industry andbusiness partners.

“W14 is undoubtedly the best and mosthigh profile exhibition for the furnituremanufacturing industry and Blum will bethere to interact with our front-line customersby demonstrating our skills in working withwood and all associated products. We willhave our Austrian apprentice colleagues onthe stand to show how Blum develops for thefuture and our partners in business but alsoplan to show how Blum UK want to introducethis element of co-operation into the UK.”

Main picture. Blum apprenticesfrom Austria will be demonstratingtheir skills at W14.

Following a formal education David Sanders joined hisfather’s business manufacturing and retailing kitchenfurniture, based in Liverpool. David developed a strongunderstanding and respect for the quality andinnovation inherent in the hardware and fittings -hinges and drawerboxes - from their supplier Blum UK.

In 1995 David, with agreement from his father, decided to ‘go it alone’ and joined SymphonyKitchens. The Blum UK representative for the north ofEngland at the time, Bob Parker, tracked him downand persuaded him to apply for a job in sales withBlum, which resulted in discussions with Blum UK MD

Michael Powell at the 1994 ASFI exhibition. The approval of David’s plans to form a Blum

distribution network for the north of England led tohim taking over Blum UK distribution nationally. Theway Blum plans and works worldwide mean that hewas already earmarked for a future director of sales. And so in 2001 David moved with his family to theBlum UK HQ in Milton Keynes to learn andexperience all company operations - from thewarehouse up.

In 2009 David Sanders was appointed Blum UKSales Director with responsibility for marketing as well.

Proud to offer design without limits, Steve Borrettneeded a carcase that reflected the limitless

possibilities his customers expected. He foundmore than one in Unilin’s ClicBox.

FURNITURE JOURNAL MAY 2014 • 13

Time is money when you work alone. Steve Borrett has foundUnilin’s ClicBox has given him more time and enabled him to

open a new market.

It takes me longer to get it out ofthe box than it does for me to putit together,” explains Steve Borrett,

owner of Great Yarmouth-based D&GKitchens, when asked how easyUnilin’s ClicBox is to use. “I’ve nevercome across a product like it. It's soquick and easy to assemble, anyonecould do it.”

It’s not every day you hear a skilledkitchen fitter with more than 25 yearsexperience in the trade tell you howsimple part of his job is but thenagain, it’s not every day you areconfronted with the ease andsimplicity of a Unilin ClicBox.

As you walk around D&G Kitchens’55m2 showroom, it’s clear to see thatthe independent kitchen retailer andfitter knows a thing or two aboutkitchen manufacturing. He’s in demand. So much so, his diary is full for the nextfive months and, relying solely on wordof mouth, he has won orders for morethan 20 kitchens and 10 bedrooms inthe last 12 months. But, for someonewho works predominantly single-handedly on all his projects, where doeshe find the time?

“In this line of work, time is avaluable commodity. I have no time forgimmicks,” admits Steve. “I like to do a

gg the box“

12-14 Unilin 3pp.qxd 17/4/14 10:14 am Page 3

job well. I openly tell people that Idon’t make cheap kitchens, I makegood-quality kitchens, so I’m sure it’llcome as no surprise when I say I alwayserr on the side of caution when itcomes to working with new products.”

With the housing market on themove again, Steve didn’t want to turnwork away but he desperately neededto find a way of saving time so hecould capitalise on the upturn inenquiries. “I’d been manufacturing myown kitchen carcases for over 15years,” he explains. “It was labourintensive but with nothing on themarket that could rival the quality andeffectiveness of my own carcases, Ihad no choice but to continue makingthem myself.”

After seeing a demonstration ofUnilin’s ClicBox at the end of last yearduring the May Design Series, Stevecouldn’t resist giving it a go himselfand in under a minute, he had createdhis very first ClicBox. “I was seriouslyimpressed,” he recalls. “Not only wasit quick to assemble, it was just assturdy as my made-to-order carcasesand offered my customers choice andflexibility in their designs.”

ClicBox also ticked the box whenit came to quality. “I was surprisedhow much thought had gone intothe design of this product,” he adds.“Even the wall units had been made30mm wider than a standard base

unit allowing for a full-size dinnerplate to be stored easily. It’s this typeof thing that gives me an edge overthe competition.”

Steve’s also impressed with theflexibility ClicBox gives him. Proud tooffer design without limits, he neededa carcase that reflected the limitlesspossibilities his customers expected. The smart drilling pattern, which hasbeen designed to match a range offitting suppliers, means he can stilloffer four or five drawers and drawerliners can be added without the needto drill extra holes, providingcustomers with complete control overtheir kitchen. And, with help fromUnilin’s UK distributor HPP, Steve canorder from a range of forty-twocabinet sizes and formats in any colourfor next day deliver.

Now Steve has time on his side, he’sbusy creating a new showroom thatincludes a ClicBox kitchen display.Without the need to manufacturecarcases himself, he’s also had the timeto explore new opportunities andopened a new market with a localhousing developer. He readily confirmswhat Unilin, the makers of ClicBox,have been saying for a while: “Thanksto ClicBox, I’m able to spend moretime fitting kitchens and less timecreating carcases.” And that’s what it’sall about isn’t it?

For May 2014, Egger haslaunched three new synch-ronised pore textures in its

Zoom 2014 - all with adifferent tonality and feel.

Egger's new synchronised poresurfaces - on both sides of the board -tie the décor and the surface texture

together perfectly to create a look andfeel that’s incredibly close to solid woodand veneer. They have the addedadvantages of colour consistency over thelifetime of the furniture as well as beinghard wearing and low maintenance. Allthree new synchronised pore textures inthe Zoom 2014 update have a uniquecharacter and have been developed tooffer a different tonality and feel fromsubtle and elegant to more rustic. “Thenew additions to Zoom do far more thancomplement the existing collection, theyare truly evolutionary,” says NickMcLoughlin, Egger UK’s Head ofMarketing. “When we presented ournew wood developments to experienceddesign professionals as part of our NPDprocess they had difficulty telling themapart from a solid wood and veneer. Glue lines between panel andedge are what the furnitureindustry has long wanted to see

banished. A number of solutions havebeen proffered over the years withvarying degrees of success. Whenperfect processing conditions are met, classic hotmelts based on ethylene vinylacetate (EVA), polyolefin (APAO) orpolyamide (PA) work well for edgebanding panel materials but seemunable to provide an invisible glue lineon a permanent basis, even though theglue line may appear completelyclosed. Over time, dust, householdcleaners, humidity in the room andtemperature changes take their toll, causing even a minimal joint openingto stand out. Rubber effect, caused byhand contact and daily cleaning, exacerbates the appearance, especiallyif light-coloured adhesives and panelmaterials have been used.

Another relatively more expensiveapproach is to bond directly using lasertechnology which melts a matchingcoloured plastic layer that has been pre-applied to the edge material. There's no

question that the glue line is moreclosed than with the classic bondingtechnology. However, thermoplasticsremain - and with them, the rubbereffect, though less pronounced, is stillpotentially a feature because it remainsphysically as well as chemicallyimpossible to weld the edgeband to thepanel. Even thermoplastics are notguaranteed to produce a zero glue lineon a permanent basis.

So what’s the solution?According to the adhesive specialist

Kleiberit, Kleiberit PUR HM 707.9polyurethane has been used for manyyears and it does provide an invisibleglue line without opening, or rubbereffect. The glue line from this reactivehotmelt is extremely hard, says Kleiberit,so rubber effect is unknown. Moreover, when correctly processed, it is alsoclaimed to be permanently water-resistant because Kleiberit PUR HM707.9 develops a real chemical bondwith wood in the panel which can onlybe separated with excessive force.

If the name confuses you into thinkingHolz-Handwerk is a show for the smallerend of the craft industry, a visit will convince you it’s not. This is a seriousevent for serious manufacturers.

Spring temperatures came toBavaria’s second largest city,Nürnberg, as Holz-Handwerk 2014

opened its doors alongside Fensterbau, the window trade exhibition. Perhapsunfairly, the name Holz-Handwerk hintstowards affinity with the cosy end of theindustry but in truth its halls werepacked with some real industry heavy-weights. Maka chose to showcase aneight-metre version of its endlesslyadaptable five-axis PE90; Reichenbachershowed its heavyweight Vision R; amongthe machines on the SCM Group stand, aheavily-specified Morbidelli Author M600was drawing serious attention; HomagCity burgeoned with machines for everysector of wood and panel processing; andWeinig demonstrated to eager crowdshow its heavyweight Powermat 1200could be tamed with its new Moulder-master software program, linking everymachine in the Weinig solid woodprocessing stable. Not quite Handwerkas it used to be, I think you’ll agree.

So what were the highlights?Only ten months after a Ligna that

positively bristled with new machines,it’s only to be expected that genuinelynew technology will be at a premium.Yet, in the edgebanding sector tech-nology seems to be moving rapidly: twoyears ago, laser edgebanders were thecutting edge technology for applyingglueline-free mating of panel surface toedging. At Ligna, hot air systems werebeing introduced, cutting much of thecost out of creating the ultimate edge(Biesse launched its latest Airforcecompressed hot air system during Holz-Handwerk). And now, only a fewmonths on from Ligna, Holz-Her choseHolz-Handwerk to launch its Luminaedgebanding machine with a new, modular Ltronic NIR (Near Infra-Red)system for use with either co-extrudedor standard edging - and the bigbenefits here are no heat up time, significantly quieter operation andfaster changeover.

Heesemann’s recently launched giantLSM 10 sander didn’t make it to Holz-Handwerk, though Costa Levigatrici hadbrought several of its larger modelsalong, clearly in the expectation thatthey would be seeing clients from largercompanies. The sander specialist Boereshowed its Select X-Line machine forscarving and texturing of woodensurfaces - and in line with the Europeantrend for more structure and texture insurfaces, the new machine provideseven more depth on solid wood butsubtlety when texturing veneers as thinas 0.6mm.

Although a few major hardware anddécor specialist took stand space, there isno doubt Holz-Handwerk is a machineryshow. And it’s a very busy one. Over108,000 trade visitors - about 10% morethan at the previous event in 2012 -found their way to Nürnberg during theexhibition. There was plenty for them tosee. And despite the name, it’s far from ahand craft show!

With a Boere Select X-Line, theEuropean craze for a rustic finishis easy to produce on solid wood

or real wood veneers.

Boere’s Select X-Line might look likeany other wide belt sandingmachine - but a sanding machine it

is not. The three heads of the Select X-Line are purpose-designed brushes which,by using specially formulated materials ofdifferent shapes and dimensions, canproduce a range of finishes whichemphasise the natural grain charac-teristics of the timber, making it lookweathered, cross-cut and sawn. Porestructure becomes enhanced, deeper andmore tactile. Even panels laminated withreal wood veneers as thin as 0.6mm canbe treated on the Select X-Line, thoughfor a deeper finish, 2mm veneer isunquestionably better.

The Boere Select X-Line is not a newmachine. However, at Holz-Handwerk,Boere unveiled its latest brushes. Madeusing new materials and different bristleshapes and dimensions, their effectivenesshas been enhanced significantly as thesamples on this page show clearly.

With its eight-metre bed, Maka’sbespoke PE90 was undoubtedly oneof the largest machines shown at

Holz-Handwerk. Intended to showcase theGerman company’s prowess in machines forspecial applications, the monster Makafeatured a 50o five-axis head with a 400mm Zaxis, NC bars and pods on the bed, a turningdevice for flipping panels (this particularmachine was designed and built for interiordoor manufacturing) and a horizontal chain-type toolchanger equipped with 33 tools.

Developed in close co-operation with itsnew Austrian owner, the PE90 at Holz-Handwerk signalled the start of a new era forMaka: fifteen years ago, Maka used to buildits own robust and extremely efficient five-axismachining spindles but abandoned in-housemanufacture some years later. The Combimat is a3-in-1 press for quickturnaround of batchesor one-off pressings, heating quickly yetproviding a level ofautomation thatmakes 300mm deeppressings easy.

The updated Combimat, shown forthe first time on the Columbusstand at Holz-Handwerk, offers all

the advantages of the previous model -bending of laminates, flat pressing andveneering, pre-heating and forming ofthermoplastic materials, hot formingand 3D lamination - but, according toManfred Müller, it now comes with aneven better foil laminating program forimproved pressing. The new programreally comes into its own when pressingdeeply contoured components, such asthe 300mm deep bowl demonstrated bythe machine on the Columbus stand.

The combination of a heating unit, aforming unit and a foil laminating unitmakes the space-saving Combimat aversatile and adaptable three-in-one

machine. The heating unit and heatinghood (equipped with three heaters inthe 2.88m x 1.28m press at Holz-Handwerk) are equipped with industrialhot air convection heating which heatsup very gently, preventing discolo-uration of sensitive materials andreducing the likelihood of materialssticking to the working surface. Silence is golden - or more correctly infra-red on the Holz-Her standwhere the new Holz-Her Lumina edgebander was making its debut.Neither a laser edgebander nor a hot air edgebander, the new

Lumina utilises a cutting edge heat/light system with near laser lightlength. Quite apart from the fact that the Lumina has no air pressure andruns quieter than a normal edgebander, it also benefits the user byrequiring no heat-up time, by offering significantly reduced powerconsumption and by providing the user with complete flexibility in termsof the type of edgebanding material that can be processed. Simply enterthe edgeband type and the Lumina takes care of the rest automatically. But that’s only a small fraction of the technical wizardry that Holz-Her hasbuilt into the Lumina.

Designed for the cabinet-maker rather than the industrial user, theLtronic NIR unit (right) in the Lumina can be disconnected and swappedin an instant for Holz-Her’s Glu Jet system, transforming it quickly andeasily into a standard edgebander. In short, it’s as happy processingstandard edging materials as it is applying co-extruded edgebands - and itwill work with edgings up to 45mm wide.

Owning a Cojet is a bit likehaving a licence to printmoney. The Cojet, designed

and made by Anderson and sold inthe UK through RW Machines, is ahigh definition flatbed printingmachine which is capable of printingpractically anything from woodgrainpatterns to pictures on flat panels, doors, wood, metal, ceramics andglass, concrete - even foam. TheCojet not only prints to 1440dpi withinks that are warranted UV stable foreight years, it can add texture to thesurface. The inkjet heads return tooverprint the image up to eighttimes, building a surface with realdepth. And the result on a woodgrainsuch as oak, or other deep-poredtimbers, is very convincing.

“It’s the type of machine thatmakes people go wow!” confirmsRichard Love, Managing Director ofIt’s All About The Image. Richardbought the first Cojet to be sold inthe UK. “I want to show peoplewhat this machine can really do.”Keen to push the boundaries of KBB

design, each display in his showroomcontains uniquely printed touchesfrom splashbacks and glass-frontedkitchen cabinets to bath panels, shower screens and glazed bedroomdoors, children’s doors, headboardsand backdrops.

Carl Tranter, Production Directorat AcoustaFoam, agrees: “Everyone isa potential customer when you ownan Anderson Cojet inkjet printer,” hesays. Carl needed a machine thatcould print high-quality design onto arange of materials which includedmelamine foam (because of its lightweight and ‘O’ fire safety rating). “Welooked at several printing solutionswith a view to applying customiseddesigns but, after a demonstration ofthe Anderson Cojet, the search for theright machine promptly ended. Cojetticked all the boxes.”

Available through RW Wood-machines, the Cojet is fully supportedfor service, spares and inks by RW’sservice engineers. For details call01869 244943.www.rwmachines.co.uk

Felder has become something of ahit with Dartford-based HandsieDisplay. The installation of a new

CNC Format 4 Profit H08 from FelderUK has greatly simplified manufacturingof the unique event stand designs, barrier systems, mobile bars and morefor which Handsie Display has becomeknown. Already suppliers of bespokecatering outlets to the Chelsea FlowerShow, the British Open GolfChampionships and the 2010 WinterOlympics in Vancouver, the company iscurrently working on a project for theShard - the skyscraper in London - on achampagne bar which will feature a“high gloss black finish” and is “simple, but unique and quite cosmic,”according to Steve Jewett, AssistantManager at Handsie Display.

The CNC Format 4 Profit H08 hasopened up new opportunities for acompany that used to outsource all itsCNC work. Steve has already seen howthe Profit H08 has made the wholemanufacturing process much quicker, enabling the company to take on morebusiness. The training, provided byFelder UK's CNC Product Manager

Richard Hird, also smoothed thetransition from paper to productionand enabled Steve and his craftsmen tobe productive surprisingly quickly aftercommissioning of the machine.

The Profit H08 from Format-4 is anideal CNC machining centre for nestingapplications in the smallest of spaces.Offering a choice of two different sizedworking fields, “starter” or “professional”equipment packages for maximumproductivity, three vacuum systems from180 to 500m3/h vacuum power andlow maintenance, it’s not hard to seewhy this recent introduction to theFelder range has made such a hit withthe Handsie Display team.

Delighted with the service he’sreceived from Felder, Steve Jewettanticipates further expansion in thefuture with the CNC Format 4 ProfitH08 being the latest addition to arange of Felder machines which alsoincludes the G400 Edgebander and aCorner-Rounding machine from theFelder group.

After installation of anew Mawera FSR 850,Decorpanel is set tobenefit from reducedheating and wastedisposal bills - as well asRHI payments.

With six Homag beam saws, CNCdrilling machines, CNC routingmachines and edgebanders

producing around 20 tonnes in off-cutsevery week, Decorpanel of Hetton-le-Hole needed a boiler that would enablethe company to utilise its waste fully andprovide heating for the whole site. Withthe existing system out of action and afactory that was heated with gas andelectric, Decorpanel’s Ian Ling knewthere had to be a more efficient andeconomical alternative when he invitedMawera to come up with a solution. Andin the middle of 2013, Mawera, aspecialist in biomass boilers and heatingplants with outputs ranging from 110kWto 13,000kW, provided the solution, installing a Mawera FSR 850 Plant withflat moving grate, fully automaticde-ashing and automatic tube cleaning.Full installation of the boiler and the siteheating, together with the ancillaries, took 24 weeks.

Decorpanel’s Mawera FSR 850 is ableto burn both MDF and laminatedchipboard products efficiently and takes

care of all the company’s heatingrequirements. Fully automatic handlingsystems ensure the boiler is continuouslyfed with the correct amount of waste andan electrostatic filter ensures PMemissions are reduced to the minimum.Because the Renewable Heat Incentivesupports the use of wood waste as a fuel, six months after installation of its newMawera FSR 850, Decorpanel was givenRHI accreditation.

The new Process Guidance Note 1/12(13) for combustion of waste woodplaces exceptional demands on all newinstallations, requiring compliance withchallenging emission levels. However, according to Mawera’s John Clissett, theGuidance Note for new plant is now inline with RHI requirements and plantsthat qualify and have been issued withpermits are now eligible to receive RHIScheme payments. Decorpanel is set tobenefit from reduced heating and wastedisposal bills - as well as RHI payments.

edging. It can also manually feed solid wood strips up to 5mmthick. Thanks to its high frequency motor and horizontal and

vertical tracers, the PCS is suitable for corner rounding and to limitdowntime, a new quick-change glue tank unit allows for installation

in less than one minute. The small machine boasts the same dragchain as the Pro and System series and includes a glue scraper and

buffing unit to aid a perfect finish as standard. It also includes a 3.5”touch-screen control unit that can create up to 20 work programs.

Combilift met with success at thisyear’s FLTA’s Awards for Excellencewith its Combi-WR4.

Combilift’s first pedestrian reach truck, the new multidirectionalforklift Combi-WR4, won the Ergonomics Award from the UKFork Lift Truck Association (FLTA) who praised “Combilift’s

drive to keep fork lift operators comfortable and safe, while achievingthe highest levels of productivity and efficiency.”

The first purpose-built 4-way pedestrian stacker has a lift height of4.2m and a load capacity of 1,450kg and can work in aisle-widths asnarrow as 2.1m pallet to pallet. It features pantograph reach, sideshift and tilting fork carriage for handling long loads and pallets.

It is easy and effortless to operate thanks to its unique patentedmulti-position tiller, electronic power steering and fingertip controls, reducing the need for leaning, reaching and bending in addition tominimising general manual strain when picking and placing loads.Safety is increased together with enhanced visibility as the operatorremains at the side of the truck rather than between the rear of thetruck and racking.

Martin McVicar, Comblift MD, explained that the company’ssmallest model to date was the result of customer feedback forcompact and cost-effective machines in very confined areas.

We tried everything to fixwhat we thought was anissue with our beam saw,”

explained Neil Wade, owner of CJKitchens in Cambridgeshire. “We had areal problem: the MFC kept chippingand we were sending five sets of beamsaw blades out for sharpening everyweek. The rectification and boardtrimming alone was taking up serioustime - time we needed to do the workcoming through. We had six sets ofblades for the beam saw but werealways running out.” CJ’s saw servicereturned the blades sharpened andwax-coated but the MFC would stillchip and the edges on the bladeswould not last.

A dismayed Neil set about trying toresolve the problem and eventuallyfound the answer when Leitz Toolingvisited his workshop. “It was a veryhelpful visit,” recalls Neil. “They lookedat what we were producing and how wedid it and took away a couple of bladesfor sharpening. Once the first one wasback on the beam saw, we didn'tchange it for four weeks and the MFCcut more smoothly than we'd ever seen.”

CJ Kitchens cuts around nine sheetsof 2.8m x 2070mm x 18mm MFC everyday. Suddenly, from sending five sets of

beam saw blades every week forsharpening, they went down to one setevery three to four weeks - all by usingthe sharpening service from Leitz. Soonafter, Neil decided to invest in LeitzRazor-cut saw blades. “Some of theslightly cheaper MFC used to chipbadly and the time needed to rectifythe work and check and even replacethe saw blades wiped out any marginalcost saving on the product,” recallsNeil. “We are finding that by usingLeitz saw blades and servicing, ourwork is a whole lot easier.”

Brian Maddox, Leitz Tooling’s SalesManager, is adamant Razor-Cut sawblades are among the best available. “Atrial with our saw blades can make ahuge difference in downtime andsetting time, duration and quality,” hesays. “Like CJ Kitchens, we want moremanufacturers to talk to us about whatwe can do to transform theirproduction lines. The time and costsaving potential in downtime is huge, particularly when combined with ourexpert sharpening services.”

Noberne Doors Ltd supplies bespoke, high performance fire doors, acoustic doors, external thermal rated doors, bullet resistant doorsand even x-ray doors (pictured below left). Founded nearly 40 yearsago as a manufacturer of timber doors, Noberne Doors recentlyneeded to choose a new compact saw to fit their limited factoryspace, but without a loss in build quality, capacity and travel speed.

The fh3 cut-to-size saw from Schelling was the answer, combining high technology in a compact size. The fh3 also has the

advantage of an automatic short stroke pressure beam which only lifts andlowers as far as the actual book height requires, leading to faster cycle timeswhen cutting material. This suited Noberne Doors as, due to their workingshift patterns, it was important to get as much cutting as possible completed

during a shift. The production output is further increased by the automaticfeature which adjusts the saw height projection to the optimal cutting height after

detecting the material book height.Swiftly meeting specific customer demands (such as varying sizes, widths and finishes),

the fh3 can process a wide variety of timber materials using a 14kW motor that has thecapacity for both small batch production and fast throughput of larger orders.

Schelling offers more options to suit individual requirements. These include grooving, window cutting and an angle cut option. The viewing window in the pressure beam coveroffers good visibility when cutting and, meeting Noberne Doors’ needs, there is the formatdevice that allows for cutting material with surface overhang around the panel. Thisguarantees precise machining of projecting surface veneers.

Overall, Trevor Watson, Production Manager at Noberne Doors, is pleased withSchelling, saying that the fh3 has delivered on all counts - a compact saw, able to achievetheir production targets, without compromise. At a lower cost, the fh3 saw retains all theexcellence of precision and cutting performance you expect from a Schelling machine.
