After 12 months of preparation and auditing, IDS has been awarded ISO 14001 forEnvironmental Management Systems (EMS). The certificate shows that the surface materialsdistributor is compliant with all current environmental legislation and takes its environmentalresponsibilities seriously - which includes having processes in place to reduce and monitorenergy consumption and waste disposal costs. Paul Hyam, Business Controls Manager at IDS,said that although gaining ISO 14001 has meant a lot of hard work and investment across all12 branches, the company would benefit now that it could add the world’s leading certificatefor environmental management to the fact that over 80% of the company’s products areenvironmentally certified.

The auditing and award of the certificate was by BM Trada, a leading multi-sectorcertification body accredited by UKAS.

Valentino Villa, chief executive of CML Engineering, recently visited Daltons Wadkin’sheadquarters in Nottingham to reach a new distributor agreement. Shown left shakinghands with Francis Dalton, Valentino has agreed that Daltons Wadkin now has exclusiverights to supply the entire range from his Italian Multi Rip Saw manufacturing companythroughout UK and Ireland. A CML J350R Multi Rip with moveable saws will be the firstmachine to be dispatched from Italy, and it will be appearing at a Daltons Wadkin openday period, starting 29 April, with other machinery for the solid timber sector.

The extensive CML Multi Rip Saw range features many and varied specifications fromthe basic J250 for the smaller workshop to moving blade machines and, at the top end ofthe scale, double spindle edgers with capacities up to 1200mm board width and 250mmdepth of cut.

Francis Dalton was delighted to have secured the deal and said that the machinesfitted well into the product portfolio. “We look forward to showing them off during theforthcoming open days and at W14 later in the year.”

Two new faces have been added to the Sales Team at East Coast Fittings Ltd (ECF):• David Starling (above left) is the Territory Sales Manager for the West, South and EastYorkshire counties. David brings a wealth of customer knowledge from his previousemployments at Crestwood UK and Uber Doors, which will help ECF build positively ontheir reputation as a quality manufacturer and distributor to the trade.• Karl Donaghey (above right) will support ECF’s newly launched Greyhouse bathroomfurniture range as Northern Regional Sales Manager. He has owned his own business inthe KBB sector for the last 12 years and also brings plumbing and heating knowledgefrom his early career at Plumb Center.

At the end of January 2014,Schattdecor AG and Bernd Reuss parted

with a mutual amicable agreement.Bernd had been Head of Corporate

Communications at the Germany-baseddécor paper printer since May 2001,

and will continue in consultation withthe company to complete a number ofprojects until March 2014. There have

been no reasons given for his departureand, at this time, a decision regarding

his successor has not yet been reached.

A three-day event will take place at Ney’s headquarters in Coventry from 10to 12 April 2014, featuring a wide range of woodworking machinery andcomponents as part of the Spring In-house exhibition. Exhibitions like W14 let customers meet exhibitors face to face (and vice versa), see products up close and spot newexciting developments. It allows both to share knowledge - and so delivers power to all involved.

4 • FURNITURE JOURNAL MARCH 2014

W14 is the latest edition in an unbrokenrun of 40 years of knowledge-packed events

for the UK joinery and furniture industries.

ffoorrttyy yy

The phrase ‘knowledge is power’ is most likelyattributable to Sir Francis Bacon, who livedover 400 years ago, but in business today we

might equally claim that knowledge is profit.Furniture and joinery manufacturers of all sizes

will be fully aware that knowledge in theirindustry is changing at a faster rate than everbefore, and that the competition for it is global.New product development constantly impacts oncosts and capabilities with potential extinction forthose left behind.

Emerging micro manufacturers find thatsophisticated technologies are now priced withintheir reach as the digital revolution reaches out toevery manufacturing operation no longercompeting purely on low cost. That means mostUK manufacturers.

So, if knowledge is essential, fast changing andfar reaching, where is it to be found in the UK?First stop is often by tapping into an internetsearch engine. This is fine if you know the rightquestion to ask and the question of trust in thesource of the answer arises – because meaningfulconversations on the web can be hard to come by.

Trade exhibitions score heavily over cyber-space here. Most people enjoy and gain mostfrom face to face conversations. For furniture andjoinery manufacturers the W14 exhibition hashuge value in that respect. Its 40-year heritage isso well trusted no-one stops to think about it.

Of course, manufacturers could visit ten ortwenty suppliers of a product in which they areinterested. Or have them come along to the

04-5 W14 DPS (james) 26/2/14 2:43 pm Page 2

Page 7: FJ Mar 2014

office with brochures and tabletcomputer in hand. Consider the timeand resource that would take - andthat’s just for one product. At W14 weall know that the key suppliers will beunder one roof, within a short stroll ofeach other at the NEC. The job can becompleted quickly before you pop offfor a sandwich and coffee!

Every 2 years, the exhibition halls arepacked with industry professionalsworking for exhibitors at a W exhibition. They are going to be at the exhibitionbecause they are considered to haveknowledge which will be valuable tovisiting manufacturers. They are skilled indemonstrating their products, explainingthe benefits and applying all of this tothe specific needs of the visitor. This is apersonal tailored consultancy servicewhich is simply unique.

We should also remember that thesuppliers choosing to exhibit every twoyears at the industry’s nationalexhibition are implicitly confident thatthe value of their product will standcomparison with their competitors inthe halls. There is no greater expressionof belief in your product thandemonstrating it face to face alongsidethe competition. For this reason alone, the exhibition has an absolutelyinvaluable function for manufacturers.

Manufacturers can usually onlymake enquiries about products theyknow exist. At an exhibition it’sdifferent. A wander around the hallsallows visitors to see innovation, development and new methods theymight otherwise not see until they finda competitor using them. In theunforgiving business climate of todaythat might just be too late.

Of course exhibitors at the NEC areacquiring knowledge as well. They meetnew customers who were previouslyunknown to them. They find out whatexisting customers are thinking ofdoing. They discover what the marketthinks of them. And most report crucialnew business relationships beingformed at the show.

The exhibition for the furniture andjoinery industry always has been adown to earth event, essential to bothsuppliers and manufacturers inunderstanding and steering themarket. Since the knowledgerevolution changed UK manufacturingfor good they are a unique partner toother media in delivering knowledgeface to face.

And knowledge is even moreinclined to deliver power nowadaysthan it was over 400 years ago.www.w14exhibition.com

In a non-Interzum year, ZOW has traditionally buzzed with new décors. This year, with the exception of Hornschuch, LG, Interprint and a few FarEastern manufacturers, the halls were largely empty of décor specialists

as many of the main players voted with their feet to slow the pace ofchange in a sector that has become as fast moving as fashion and fabric. And they were not alone. Many of the big boys in hardware had alsodeserted ZOW 2014, leaving Titus and Samet virtually alone in thespotlight. On the Monday, the aisles were quieter than any ZOW we’veever attended and even on the second day when things seemed to pickup, there was nothing of the vibrancy and enthusiasm of previous events.

The organisers, Clarion Events Germany, proclaimed they had extendedtheir contracts with the Bad Salzuflen Exhibition Centre to 2018, statingboldly, “The industry can be assured that ZOW will remain its annual earlyseason platform.” Seeking to reassure an unmistakably twitchy industry, theorganisers added, “In 2015 we’ll be putting a very clear spotlight on thetrend for individualised mass production.” I sincerely hope they have madethe right decision. Exhibitors from various sectors seemed to be speculatingon whether ZOW could survive in its present form. Several seemed tobelieve a two-yearly event, maybe even repositioned midway betweenInterzums, might serve the needs of the industry better.

reviewAfter what felt like a ratherflat show, will ZOW be ableto continue as an annualevent without major changes?

Left. Have you ever heard of guerrilla knitting? No?It was new to me, too, but, apparently, the craze toknit bicycles to railings and cover tree trunks withbrightly coloured knitting has really taken off - and itsinfluence has spread to the handles of Union Knopf. On the stand were knitted, denim, even zipperedhandles alongside even more industrial additions tothe Raw Collection. Whilst it is hard to deliver trend news without a consensus, the search fora new alternative to oak in the décor sector, clearly signalled at Interzum2013, has resulted in a number of new elm and walnut décors coming tomarket. The ultra-rustic, saw-marked effects we saw rise spectacularly awhile ago have been calmed down in severity over the last year or so,although emphasis is still on high quality print with ever better embossings.

With little new to shout about in the decorative hardware sector at thisyear’s ZOW, Union Knopf stood out again for its originality in handledesign. Union Knopf’s roots in the world of apparel and high fashion havetaken it into the hitherto unexplored world of guerrilla knitting. Sometimesreferred to as Kniffiti or Yarn Storming, this craze apparently often results inbicycles being knitted to railings in capital cities around Europe while theowners are not looking. I joke not. Take a look at the handles on the leftpage: knitted covers, denim covers, zippered covers and more have beenadded to Union Knopf’s Raw Level collection, which also now includes evenmore industrial-looking handles with rough-welded joints. If your furnitureoffer includes a Panzer range, these could be ideal.

In summary, this year’s ZOW was a bit of a let-down. From the start itfelt flat and genuinely new product was hard to find. One can only hope itwill not lose its product focus in order to continue as an annual event.

For ZOW, the surface specialists Hornschuch chose ThinkingOutside the Box as its motto: “This means design withoutrestrictions on free thought, unusual creations for which thedesigners thought unconventionally and saw the biggerpicture,” explained Axel Schmidt from the stand. The resultwas shown as a piece of designer furniture (above), an eye-catcher by interior decorator Imme Vogel which symbolisesopenness and the pursuit of new topics.

Several new décor foils made their debuts on the ZOW stand, among them two striking alternatives to oak. Developed indecor association with Schattdekor, skai® Missouri Walnut(under this caption) opens a new chapter with rusticelegance in the form of large flowers, fine, sharp walnutpores and wind cracks. The fine details are emphasised byNoce embossing. In addition to typical walnut tones, thecolour range also includes the trendy light gray area. skai®

Missouri Walnut is a wood design that will own the future.

Details from Hornschuch: 0049 7947 810 or visitwww.hornschuch.de

Also from Hornschuch, the new design skai® Sangallo Elm(beneath this caption) provides a delicate reinterpretationof the traditional elm, which Hornschuch presents inco-operation with Süddekor and Kaindl. Harmonious interplayof late wood pores, fine light areas and rings characterise thisnew design. Its knot-free structure looks both powerful andtimeless and the Arco embossing enhances the design with afine shimmer. Available in six fresh colours.

The Detmold-based adhesivesspecialist, Jowat, chose ZOW2014 to present the very latest

addition to its family of edgebandingadhesives.

For a perfect bond on all standardedgebanding and panel products, thereis little to beat a reactive PUR hotmelt. For large batch production, the newJowatherm-Reaktant® 607.60 PUR hotmelt provides extra process reliability.According to Jowat, the high initialstrength of this adhesive permits fasterand safer downline finishing operationsand the product is available in either alight beige or white (607.61).

Jowat’s second launch at ZOW hasbeen formulated with smaller batchproduction needs in mind - and it has

been formulated to provide optimalbonding when used with the newgeneration of laser edgebanders. A PO-based pre-coating adhesive from theJowat-Toptherm® series, it is ideal foruse with plastic, veneer and melamineedges and can be purchased in smalllots. This product is formulated withspecial additives that convert the laserenergy into heat, activating theunderside of the edgebanding for thebonding process. The result is asuperfine, almost invisible but hardbond line which Jowat says has theadded benefit of excellent finalstrength.

For further details of the newproducts at ZOW and all other Jowatproducts, call 01782 565265.

Seamless joins between surfaces andedges have become the holy grailof the panel processing sector over

the last few years. For the finishing ofmelamine surfaces with a deep andlustrous high gloss, Kleiberit’s Hot-Coating technology, launched formallyin May last year, provides an entirelydifferent solution which seems to havefew rivals in the market. Not only doesHotCoating provide a high gloss leveland increase the depth of colour, it addsthe beneficial property of scratchresistance whilst making possible acontinuous form which has no visibleglue line between the surface and theedge. And because HotCoat offers ahigh degree of flexibility, finishedmelamine surfaces can be shaped in thedirect postforming process and even thesmallest edge radius is possible.

Traditional high gloss surfaces oftenreach their limits while being formedover the edges of panels, sometimesbecause of the thickness of the décor, sometimes because of the hard orcrystalline nature of some surfaces whichdo not lend themselves to shapingwithout cracking. HotCoat technologyincludes extremely elastic properties inthe HotCoat layer, overcoming theproblem simply and efficiently.Additionally, through careful formulationof the adhesive, Kleiberit has ensuredthat the HotCoating high gloss processprovides secure adhesion to themelamine simply and efficiently withcomparably low coat weight. Whenfinished, the surface offers best micro-scratch resistance to Steel Wool Type 0and good shock resistance.01530 836699, www.kleiberit.com

rehau at zow

New additions to Rehau’s Rauvisio product range, RauvisioCrystal and Rauvisio Brilliant are both polymeric surfaceswhich offer a new dimension in furniture surface design.

Rauvisio Crystal, Rehau’s ‘glass’ laminate surface, provides aperfect solution for fronts utilising the machining advantages ofpolymers yet still creating the visual appearance of real glass. This product stands out primarily for its high qualityappearance, ease of cleaning, impact resistance and lightweight properties. Rauvisio Brilliant, on the other hand, is ahigh gloss laminate surface which offers with real depth.Currently available in ten colours (see below), Rauvisio Brilliantoffers a genuine substitute for expensive lacquered fronts.

Completing the Rauvisio offer was Raukantex Laser Edge.Using laser welding and hot air technology, a permanent bondis created between the edgeband and board without the use ofadhesives and without creating a joint.

ZOW saw the expansion of the Rauvolet metallic-line in aco-ordinated way. Together with Michael Schmidt ofcode2design, Rehau launched the frame4 tambour solution forthe kitchen environment. Frame4 is the new subtle track systemwith a width of just 4mm. The 4mm track frames the tambourdoor carpet in an elegant metal finish, creating a solutionappealing in design and appearance.

Despite the problems the Londonunderground threatened to createfor it, the Surface Design Show

provided exhibitors and visitors with aspectacle to rival much bigger events. The Design Centre provides a cosy envi-ronment for browsing but the number ofstands at this year’s event with genuinelynew, interesting and quite differentproducts compelled visitors to take acloser look. And those who did could onlyhave been delighted at some of the gemsthe exhibition team had uncovered.

The demand for tactile décor foils hasled companies like Giorgio Levoni,Xylocleaf and Kronospan Italia to pushthe boundaries well beyond basicsynchronisation of a print with anemboss. There was real depth andrealistic feel to Kronospan’s five newSynchropore woodgrain décors, whileLevoni and Xylocleaf respectivelyshowed patterns and abstractcombinations of natural products.

The way surfaces play with light hasbecome as important as the way theyfeel. Translucent solid surfacing mate-rials, glass, even translucent stone thatcan be formed around a curved sub-strate, were to be found among thestands at the Surface Design Show. Z-Clad and Decolan both offered thinstone in resin and fibreglass-backedsheets, perfect for imaginative contractdesigners. In the glass sector therewere even more imaginative ideas tobe found. Take a look at the ultra-green, recycled glass panels made byBottle Alley Glass (fabulous whenbacklit with Appletec’s Light Sheet)and the stunning glass designs ofDaedalian. And if it’s nature you wantto bring to a shower screen or a splashback, Objects in Glass showcased sometruly stunning ideas.

Surfaces have never been soexciting. And neither has the SurfaceDesign Show!

The Surface Design Showis the place to go for

cutting edge ideas. We’vepicked a few of the best tobring inspiration and USPs

to your furniture designs.

The fashion for texture in theform of embossed surfaceshas been taken to a new levelby Giorgio Levoni. “Yesterdays reloaded”– the trend and not fashion

Fashion is the spirit of the time, up-to-date butephemeral. By contrast, a trend developsslowly, lasts for 5-30 years and comes into

being through change in the community.Emerging trends include individuality andsustainability and, with an uncertain economicsituation, as pressure to perform grows, the homebecomes a place for retreat, security andsanctuary. Old values and traditions are beingrediscovered and gaining in importance. Interiordesign is becoming more emotional – “the goodold days”, our “yesterdays” are being “reloaded”.

The Bausch Decor | BauschLinnemann DesignDepartment have defined two key flows withinthe “Yesterdays reloaded” trend. The newlydeveloped and trendy décors, colours and fantasydesigns can be easily integrated within the worldsof “Scuffy elements” and “Peppy noble”.

Scuffy elements – dedicated to theimperfectIndustrial design and recycled products define thisinterior trend. Cultural mix is the theme of design.Folklore pattern and expressive colours harmoniseeffectively with the archaic basics. “Scuffyelements” décors are natural, authentic andpowerful, featuring woven textile structures andtraditional artisan craftsmanship. Authentic, weathered timbers with cracks and holes highlightsustainability and the recycling concept.

Authentic furniture is created with functionaland indestructible qualities. The powerful texturesgenerating the impression of imperfection areeasily combined with intensive colours.

Peppy noble – classic and with pepThis new, classic living trend appeals with a senseof functionality and sleek modernity. Filigree andorganic forms generate a cheerful feel-goodatmosphere. The design of the 1950s and 1960sis being reassessed and reinterpreted with artdeco elements being reloaded.

Classic artisan craft is also being reloaded in“Peppy noble”. Natural materials like wood, stone, felt, leather and linen are being applied inelegant, pure designs, and knitted and wovenpatterns are once again becoming predominant.

Tender pastel colours define the themealthough metallic accents of copper, silver or goldenhance the value. Smooth surfaces arechoreographed with natural materials to present adynamic and holistic image.

Peppy noble is the luxury of yesterday, withthe colours and contours of today... for tomorrow.

When you picture a paintedkitchen, what do you see? Not solong ago, the painted kitchen

was seen as a traditional finish for thoseopting for a rustic, country-style kitchen.Quintessentially English, it scored morehighly on its homely appeal than its designinnovation. But today, the painted kitchenis experiencing something of a renaissance, with UK consumers looking to createnostalgia and warmth in their homes.

To work with the rustic sawn look, wood panel manufacturer Egger haslaunched a revolutionary new range of MFCboards that are virtually indistinguishablefrom a painted timber finish. Exclusive tothe UK market, the ST27 range, which isideal for carcasses, end panels, plinths anddoors, can be used to replicate the highly-popular painted finish at a fraction of theprice. It also offers a low-maintenancealternative to timber without the time-consuming operations that cutting andworking with veneers involves.

The innovative range, which offers anunderlying oak-grain design by using a newtexture plate during manufacture, comprisesten décors in neutral heritage uni-colours, aswell as a painting-grade option - effectively

a primed board that the customer can paintin any colour of their choice.

“At the higher end of the market, leading manufacturers are offering abespoke approach to design. With Egger’sST27 range, you have the ability to paintaccording to requirements, giving thosemanufacturers with painting facilities awide scope to keep stocks low and produceaccording to demand,” explains NickMcClughin, Head of Marketing for Egger UK.

To add to the designs, matching0.8mm edging and a 2mm painting-gradeoption are available to spray any colour, offering a simple approach to the creationof a timeless, high-value look.

“There isn’t really anything like this inthe market at the moment, hence the buzzaround its launch,” explains Nick. “Ourcustomers are excited about the new rangeas it provides them with a product thatreplicates the look of painted timber orveneer at a price point that may allowthem to enter a new market segment, enhance or protect margins, compete at ahigher price point or gain market share.”

Universal Packing Specialists (UPS),based near Heathrow, has addeda fourth Standard model to its all-

Striebig stable of vertical panel saws, the oldest of which has been in use for23 years. The four saws size sheetmaterials including plywood, Tri-Wallhigh performance corrugated board, foam and polystyrene, used in theproduction of packing cases.

Universal Packing Specialists is one ofthe largest independent export packingand case-making companies atHeathrow. It packs everything fromheavy machinery to fine art and fromantiques to hazardous goods and offersits case making service to freightcompanies that do not have their ownproduction facilities.

The latest Standard TRK2 model -the second to go into service at UPS -was bought to meet an increase inbusiness and provide added flexibility.

Speaking of his latest purchase,General Manager Mark Davis com-mented, “I would not dream of goingfor another make of saw. A Striebig maynot be the cheapest available but it's thevery best. We operate 24 hours a dayfrom Monday to Friday and the saws,

which are vital to us, are in constant usefrom 3.00pm to 5.00am.

“I have stayed with Striebig for allour sawing needs because, despite thesheer amount of work we get out ofthem, they just never let us down. Theonly problem we have ever had withthe oldest machine in over 20 years hasbeen a broken bearing.”

Standard TRK2s come in nine framesizes for handling panels up to 5300 x2240mm. The 5524 models chosen byUniversal Packing have a maximumcutting size of 4300 x 2240mm. AllStandard machines have a cuttingdepth of 80mm.

The latest saw, like all three previousmachines, was supplied and installed byStriebig's exclusive UK agent, TMMachinery Sales Ltd of Leicester. “It's atestament to the reliability of theStandard range that Universal Packingkeeps coming back to us for more,” saysTM’s Sales Director, Matt Pearce. “It's agreat advertisement for the robustnessand precision engineering of Striebigsaws that the first saw supplied in 1991is still going strong after all these years.”

GibenPrisma 6000

Giben is no stranger to futuristic technology. Its supremelyefficient flagship beam saw, the Prisma 6000, paves theway with eerily silent pushers and a 600 kilo saw carriage

that floats along linear guides on magnetic power of 1000 kilos, accelerating through 5G to cut 15 cycles a minute - and everytime the saw carriage brakes, a KERS system converts thebraking action into power, reducing its electricityconsumption by up to 40%.

Construction is so simplified on the Prisma 6000 that wearand replacement parts are almost a thing of the past.

It was back in February 2006 thatMartin presented what’s believed tobe the first sliding table saw with a

saw blade that could be tilted to bothsides. Then, in March 2010, Martinlaunched its high performance, flexibleT75 PreX and, to date, more than 800machines with 2 x 46° tilting technologyhave been sold.

“Our concept has made history,”comments Martin’s Michael Mühldorfer.“With the unique combination ofcutting height and tilting range, woodworkers are enthusiastic about theopportunities that the T75 PreX has tooffer.” He is convinced that, with itstilting range of 2 x 46°, the T75 PreXrepresents a development every bit asmomentous as the original T75 back in1959. The T75 was hailed as the firstsliding table panel saw to offer a one-way tiltable blade.

Where once machine constraintsdetermined work method, with the T75PreX the operator is free to executeeach angular cut at the cross-cut fenceand at the rip fence exactly the way the

job demands - without compromises. The tilting drive and saw blade arbourof the T75 PreX have been refined sincethe launch of the saw in 2006 and nowinclude increased motor horsepower(up to 11kW) and a cutting angle withan accuracy of 0.01 degrees. The tiltingdrive as well as the saw blade arbourbearings differ significantly, too, in thatthe saw blade arbor is moved from twosides. Michael Mühldorfer is adamantthis is the only way to move the heavytrunnion over an angle of 92° soprecisely and reliably.

Ingenious engineering solutions haveresulted in precise cutting with a verylarge 550mm diameter blade. Evenwhen tilted to 45°, the machine stillreaches a cutting height of around 130mm measured vertically from the tableand, despite a total tilting range of 92°,the blade guard provides completeprotection at any angle. It can even beequipped with sensors. Other featuresinclude a 3-axis scoring saw.

Bob McDermott is a real weight-watcher. Walk into the Dewsburyoffices of Hamuel Reichenbacher

UK and, as a potential customer, heprobably won’t put you on the scalesthat lurk menacingly in the entrance tothe smallest room - but you’ll almostcertainly be introduced to theheavyweight statistics of the German-built machinery his company sells. “Thebuild quality is second to none,” heeffervesces. “Hamuel Reichenbachermachining centres are made fromsectional steel that’s double the weightour competitors use. They’re over-engineered by more than 100 percent.Without exception, they offer greaterlongevity, even when machining

heavyweight materials like solid oak dayin, day out.” It’s a fact that many of hiscustomers at the very top end of bothautomotive and furniture manufacturinghave appreciated for decades, thoughhe freely admits few of his clients haveappreciated the levels of service HamuelReichenbacher UK has been able toprovide in the past.

When Bob took over as ManagingDirector of Hamuel Reichenbacher UKthree years ago, he made it his missionto contact every Reichenbachercustomer and offer free health checks fortheir machines. He prioritised customerrelations, appointing a team of fiveexperienced service engineers with apromise of four hours from callout to

arrival on site, regardless of distance.“Our service is now second to none,”says Bob. “We have five engineers andwe’re already looking for a sixth. Wecan also get German engineers herewithin 24 hours for specific problems.

“We are still servicing machines thatare 30 years old and we hold spares forthem. Anything major we don’t have instock can be delivered to us at ourcustomer’s premises by 9am thefollowing morning if we order by 2pm.”He’s so serious about customer servicethat he is in the process of investing in amachine that will keep his stock ofspindles turning constantly so there’s nodanger of seizure, meaning a spindlechange and recalibration can be carriedout in 4 hours and the machine can berun at full tilt a few minutes after fitting.

Remember that old Remington ad onTV with Victor Kiam? He liked theproduct so much he bought thecompany. Bob is so confident in thesuccess of Hamuel Reichenbachermachines that he’s done exactly thesame: he now owns 40% of Reichen-bacher UK - and already its fortunes haveturned around and his ten-strong UKoperation accounted for 7.5% of theGroup’s turnover last year. Impressed? You’ll be even more impressed withHamuel Reichenbacher’s technology.

“We have five basic machines,”explains Bob. “97% of all the machineswe manufacture are bespoke and 95%

are five-axis machines. The biggestmachine we’ve ever made has a 59-metre bed, a two-metre z axis and ismaking Russian aeroplane wings; thesmallest is our room-size Eco.” However, despite the statistics, it’s probably notsize that is Hamuel Reichenbacher’sgreatest claim to fame. The engineerswould say it’s the one hundredth of amillimetre tolerances Reichenbachermachines run to for years on end withoutflinching. The users would probably sayit’s the flexibility which results from amultitude of options, topped withbespoke design for their application.

“We make a point of knowing the jobour customers want to do intimatelybefore choosing a machine which fitsthe job,” says Bob. “Then we look atspecific features, such as three- or five-axis heads, pin tables, beam tables, matrix tables, parallel tables... Then wematch the machine to the task. Finally, when it comes to quoting, we quote anall-inclusive price, not a price with extrasfor this or that. We like to keep thingssimple and transparent.”

From humble beginnings supplyingwaterproof clothing and canteentables to the builders of the M5,

Cheltenham-based Flexfurn hasestablished itself as a market leader infolding and stackable furniture. With itsown 20,000 sq ft manufacturing facilityand showroom, the 10-strong teamcreates made-to-order solutions for theevents and hire market and for theeducation, office furniture and hosp-itality markets. After working with theBelgian company, Europa 2000, forseveral years, the two companiesmerged in 2007, with an aim toexpand their joint product range intoother European countries.

Until recently, Flexfurn concentratedon small-scale manufacturing. With itssights set firmly on breaking the globalmarket, Peter Whiteland, ManagingDirector of Flexfurn, decided to visitRW at the Birmingham trade show,W12, two years ago. “We spoke toseveral machinery companies whilst atthe show,” he recalls, “But RW, unlikemany of the companies we spoke to,was able to supply all the machinerywe needed in one go. As a family-run

business ourselves, working with andgetting to know the RW family was astrong selling point to us.”

Before RW started to work withFlexfurn, the company had a beam sawand not much else. “It was all weneeded to begin with,” admits Peter,“But with a view to expanding intoEurope, we needed machinery thatcould cope with a higher capacity andmaintain high standards.”

Peter freely admits he's not amachine buff. His brief to RW was basednot so much on specific machines as thetasks his company needed to perform,so his reliance on RW's expertise wasabsolute. Nesting capability was criticalbecause of the many varied shapes inwhich Flexfurn produces its tabletops.Whatever the machine, it needed towork with jumbo-sized sheets of MFC,melamine MDF, HPL with a chipboardcore and plywood. Coping with themachining of material that is 12mm-24mm thick was another requirement -and last but far from least, a compactfootprint was essential as Flexfurn's unithad to hold not only the new CNC butalso an edgebander and a press. RW's

To cope with Flexfurn's CNC work,RW proposed the Busellato Easy Jet, acompact, entry-level machine which isperfect for small to medium-sizedfurniture manufacturers who want amachine that allows easy access whilstin use and simple programming to savetime. Free of material loading andhandling systems but with all thecapability of CNC, the Busellato Easy Jetbrings the cost of CNC technologywithin easy reach of smaller companies, yet it’s flexible enough to enable themto respond to new opportunities withease. Available in 4’ x 8’ and 5’ x 12’tables with two boring heads (sevenvertical spindles or seven vertical andfour horizontal spindles with a groovingsaw), two work areas in the X-axis(complete with front and rear referencestops and a ten-position tool changer),it's well equipped without being overthe top. Its 9HP electrospindle runs at24000rpm and both the electrospindleand the tool-changer are aggregate-ready. The vacuum grid table is thesimplest way to hold flat panels and

comes with a variety of Schmalzvacuum cups. The machine can benetworked or fed through USBconnection. All in all, the Busellato EasyJet is a very versatile machine, which isexactly what Flexfurn needed.

“I had no CAD experience,” explainsPeter. “This wasn't a problem for RW.They enlisted the help of severalspecialist engineers who not onlyinstalled the machine but trained me onit, too. They even flew one of Busellato'sengineers over to train me and ourProduction Manager on the software. We were designing complex tableshapes in hours.”

“It's been a steep learning curve,”admits Peter. “It's a lot to take in butthe team has been great and RW iscoming back to do some more trainingwith us next month.”

As part of Flexfurn's productionsolution, RW also installed an Ormapress, an Osama glue spreader, aCasadei Flexa 37 edgebander and aVitap Eclipse edgebander.

Cross and Sansam has recentlytaken delivery of a second SCMRoutech Chronos HT 5-axis CNC

machining centre with a largerworktable and machining area. It’sthought to be the largest machine of itstype manufactured by Routech for theEuropean market.

Pattern and mould making is a largepercentage of the manufacturing atCross and Sansam but, in recent years, the company has moved into specialistwood machining and mouldings.

Impressed with their first Routech,Managing Director David Sansam andCAD/CAM Director James Sansamdecided to purchase an additional 5-axisCNC with a much larger machiningcapacity. They opted for a Chronos HTwith a 4250 x 4250mm table. The newmachine has a 900mm Z-axis capacity.Machining is carried out by an 8.5kWPrisma Q routing head with 5interpolating axes and SCM's TotalTorque system, capable of 24,000rpm.Tools are fed to the routing spindlefrom a standard Rapid 12 Automatictoolchanger. The Chronos, with its rigidportal structure, has SCM's aluminiummulti-functional work table fitted, withtwo 250m3/hour vacuum pumps, so thenesting of panels, when required, canbe carried out easily. SCM's Xilog Plusoperator interface enables easy andintuitive generation of programs using agraphical editor and tool parameters.

The possibility of importing DXF filesallows integration of CAD/CAMpackages with Cross and Sansam usingMastercam CAD/CAM. Customers’paper drawings, emailed drawings orscanned components are converted intoprograms to be sent directly to the 5-axis Chronos. These can be scaled up ordown as required.

Patterns are made from acombination of wood, plywood andsynthetic materials. For machining, atypical job uses a tool that is a 20mmend mill for roughing out, running at14,000rpm, with a feed speed of15m/min, stepping down 3mm at atime. When finishing, a 10mm cutterwith a 1mm radius is employed, runningat 18,000rpm at a 10m/min feed speedand stepping down at 0.25mm. Thefinal finish is excellent, despite the newChronos being around 20% faster, andall tooling is compatible between thetwo Chronos machines. David Sansamcomments, “Since installation of thesecond SCM Chronos, we have againbeen very impressed with its accuracyand quality of finish on the patterns andcomponents after machining, whetherthey are very large up to the machine'scapacity or fairly small, intricatecomponent parts. Space allowing, whoknows, yet another Chronos could beon the cards in the future.”

With over thirty years'experience in designing andmanufacturing technical

furniture, Lund Halsey has becomeexpert at providing solutions for oil andgas control rooms, industrial controlrooms, air traffic control, broadcaststudios and surveillance. Based inBuckinghamshire, the company meetseach customer's specific requirementsby combining modern materials suchas composites, aluminium, Corian andsteel with traditional materials.

At Lund Halsey, production speedand efficiency are factors that are vitalto the workings of the business. Withthis in mind, the production teammade contact with Magi-Cut Softwareto discuss a software solution that couldsupport and streamline the company’sproduction process.

“We had been looking for anoptimising solution for some time thatcould assist us with common issuessuch as cutting list errors, blank cuttingerrors, over ordering of materials andwaste costs that we were experiencingwithin our process,” recalls Lee Wakely,CNC programmer at Lund Halsey.“Then we discovered Magi-Cut ExpressPlus”.

Magi-Cut's Express Plus cutting listoptimiser and sheet layout softwarewas ideal for Lund Halsey, reducingcosts through yield maximisation andsimplifying moving from a part list tothe final cutting pattern. With the

ability to import part lists directly intothe software, the number of actionsrequired to achieve the final cuttingpatterns are greatly reduced.Furthermore, Express Plus contains alibrary for edging and laminates and aboard library against which stock canbe calculated and offcuts from previousjobs considered as available stock fornew jobs. The user defines what he/sheconsiders to be a retainable offcut size.Express Plus is highly customisable tothe user's tastes giving control over thesettings (optimising, trim and saw kerf, offcut size, etc), reports and cuttingpatterns (via the pattern editor).

Lee at Lund Halsey also adds, “Aftertaking advantage of the 30-day freetrial we soon realised that Magi-CutExpress Plus assisted us with all of theseissues. After minimum conversationswith the Magi-Cut Express Plus expert

team and the added advantage of theonline support we very quickly tailoredthe software to our requirements, thusmaking it easy to create cutting listsand optimising blanks within pre-logged material board sizes. Thepattern previews that the saw operatorsfollow to cut the blanks are key in thisoperation for maximising yield andminimising waste.”

Karl Twyford from Magi-CutSoftware is delighted to be able tocount Lund Halsey among thecompany’s Express Plus users. “Theirend applications are unique,” says Karl,“And it was fantastic to see that thelevel of communication with themduring their trial enabled them tocustomise the software to their ownspecific needs.”

Lee confirms, “We have been usingMagi-Cut Express Plus now for anumber of months and are extremelyhappy with the results that the softwareis giving us.”

No, it won’t cut chipboard butIntermac’s new Primus waterjetcutter will zip through MDF,

HDF, laminate, fabric, foam, leather, glass, solid surfacing materials, graniteand stone - even steel of up to 150mmthick - much faster and cleaner thanmachines equipped with conventionalcutting technology. And remarkably, bypartnering with Asset Finance Solutions,Biesse UK is able to offer the IntermacPrimus on either hire purchase, or afive-year operating lease (walk away atthe end) for just £2,500 a month with a10% deposit, refundable on delivery.

So what are the advantages of waterjet cutting?

The Intermac Primus is a true CNCmachine, capable of processing mostmaterials and switching between themrapidly. With a kerf of just 0.1mm andbuilt-in nesting via the remote controlconsole, material wastage is much lowerthan with conventional tooling. Nospecial tools are required as the waterjet will drill more or less any diameterhole as well as cut - and the waterjetcan be placed away from othermachines that require connection to adust extraction. The five-axis optionsfacilitate the cutting of complex shapesand, says Biesse, set up times are much

quicker than with a CNC router, notleast because there are no suction cupsor clamps to move. Positioning is bylaser. The water jet itself exerts nothermal or mechanical stress on thematerial it cuts either and where garnetis required - for cutting of glass, stoneand hard materials - the hopper iscontrolled by PLC. The less garnet youneed, the less frequently you will haveto change the focussing tubes - the onlyreplaceable component in the cuttinghead. Maintenance costs, says Biesse, are very low indeed - but if you opt forone of the Biesse finance packages,Biesse Total Care maintenance isincluded in the monthly price you pay.And it is exactly what it says: a servicecontract which includes all service costs.

Five standard machines are availablefrom a bed size of 1840 x 4000mm to3210 x 6000mm (a custom builtmachine can have a bed of practicallyany size you need) and there arevarious loading systems to suit differentoperations. In addition to three or fiveaxis options, twin head configurationsinclude two three-axis heads, two five-axis heads, or one of each.

We wouldn't be here todaywithout Ney,” beginsSteve Green, Managing

Director of WG Kitchens. With over 30years of experience in the woodworkingindustry, Steve was aware of Ney's solidreputation as a woodworking machinerysupplier and, through the grapevine, had heard stories about its willingnessto help small businesses grow. With hissights firmly set on creating his ownfurniture manufacturing business, heapproached Ney, hoping to have hisown success story to tell.

“It was now or never,” recalls Steve.“My colleague and I had just beenmade redundant from a contractkitchen company and we both knewthat it was the right time to set up ourown business.” Together, the duo put abusiness plan together, with the rightmachinery at the forefront of theirminds.

“Like any new company, money wastight,” explains Steve. “From the off, weknew we wanted to make high-qualitycabinetry for the retail market - lesssuperior products were not an optionfor us. To do this we would need severalmachines but we knew that getting theright machinery at a price we couldafford would be no mean feat.”

After securing some funding fromthe government's Department of Tradeand Industry (DTI) Steve, like so manyother small business owners, turned toNey's ProWood Finance team. “We'dheard great things about Ney's financeagreements and the options didn'tdisappoint. The terms were flexible andperfectly suited to a new company.ProWood also allowed us to purchasedifferent machines as we continued togrow, simply and economically -something we have utilised in the fouryears we have been in business.”

Establishing the business in a 3,000square foot unit in Staffordshire, theworkshop included four machines, allpurchased through Ney. A range of newand used machines was chosen toreflect WG Kitchen's budget: a radiusEdgebander and trimming machine, aPaoloni Beam Saw, an Ortza edge-banding machine and an Ortza CNCmachine. Ney's engineers were also onhand to train staff on how to use andmaintain each machine.

Growth for the company was quickand larger premises and more staffwere required a few years later. “Wereached the targets of our five-yearbusiness plan in two years. We simplyneeded more space to cope with theorders,” explains Steve.

With the company's turnover almostdoubling year on year and its growthup by 225% since it opened forbusiness, it wasn't only the premisesthat needed to be upgraded. “Withunexpected growth we found that themachinery we originally bought wasstruggling with the workload. We wereneeding to create over 200 cabinets aweek - something our machines werenot designed to do,” explains Steve.“We spoke to Ney and together wecame up with a solution. Within 24hours we had new machines beingdelivered to the premises and old onesbeing taken away.”

The new machines included a FravolSmart, which was chosen specifically forWG Kitchen's work. “Ney has made apoint of getting to know us and the workwe do, which has proved extremelyuseful when researching new machineryand components. The Smart wasrecommended to us because of our workwith 50mm board. It's the only one onthe market in this price-bracket that canwork with a material this thick.”

Additional growth was also takeninto account with the arrival of a Project310 CNC and a Mayer beam saw. “Eachmachine was demonstrated to us inNey's showroom and both Ney and WGKitchens were confident that themachinery would increase productivityconsiderably without the need for morestaff - manufacturing up to 350 cabinetsa week.”

For now, this is where the story endsbut the next chapter is in sight. Thebusiness duo has already set WGKitchen's future targets. “With Ney byour side we are confident that we'll beable to double our output in the nexttwo years. We're certain that wewouldn't have been able to set thecompany up without Ney's help andwe're confident that our partnership willcontinue to get stronger and stronger.”

Cassioli’s reputation for innovationand for developing revolutionarysolutions to take your storage

and picking to a new level of efficiencylong since reached the status of legend.Since the Italian company realised itsunique, patented, F.A.S.T automatedstorage solution for furniture storage, its status in this highly specialisedmarket has grown even further.

Perfect for companies that planproduction based on demand, Cassioli‘sF.A.S.T system replaces manual systemscompletely, optimising finished productstorage, customer order grouping andproduct shipment. The F.A.S.T systemovercomes problems many conventionalwarehouses encounter, such asguaranteeing single package selection, handling only similarly-sized packages,or forcing a system to operate on unitarypackage handling.

F.A.S.T system logic keeps stock inhand based on goods sold, storing

items of different sizes, shapes andweights in the same cell. There’s nohandling of empty pallets and theproblem created by products arrivinglate is completely eliminated. Space isoptimised and, when unexpectedvariations occur in production orshipment plans, F.A.S.T allows for just-in-time modification of pick-upsequences whilst simultaneouslyreducing lead times overall. Comparedwith manual handling, Cassioli sayF.A.S.T reduces damage as well as errorsand the risk of industrial accidents.

When compared with warehousesequipped with single package pickingdevices, Cassioli says F.A.S.T, deliverssignificant time and cost advantages, allowing the simultaneous transfer ofmultiple items both during loading andunloading and drastically reducing theworkload for the stacker crane. Com-pared with batch, conveyor belt, rollerconveyor and fork-based warehouses,

ppiicckk ffaasstt

Above. The pick-up device adjusts tovarious heights in the storing cell andcan handle products of considerably

different shape, weight and size.

The F.A.S.T system does not require pallets orsupport panels yet it allows joint pick-up of

multiple items in a single machine cycle.

Right. The F.A.S.T warehouse management systemmemorises the location of each package and includes a

procedure for storing on the shelf that allows placing andretrieving multiple items by means of reciprocal thrust

between packages and package positioning relative to thestocking availability on the shelf being used.

From the warehouse design stageto control of every element ofstock in the warehouse, F.A.S.Tfrom Cassioli delivers high speed,just-in-time performance tostreamline your operation.

F.A.S.T optimises and organises eventotally random supply - and it canhandle packages of different dimensionsin the same grouping, even when thedimensions are significantly different.

One of the major problems for manywarehouses is open pallets at the end ofa production line. In factories notequipped with F.A.S.T, the line followsproduction in the panel processingsequence. Picking is carried out in theorder the components are producedand grouping is typically according tocustomer order. Using the F.A.S.Tsystem, faster picking operations arepossible because packages are groupedby type, which also helps to streamlineand optimise machining operations.F.A.S.T handles and stores the productin the warehouse without the use of testpanels or pallets, providing a uniqueitem retrieval and deposit system basedon a thrust mechanism. Physicalproduct allocation inside the warehouse

is based on the cell access index, assignment criteria for stacker craneoperations and the use of combinedcycles - all key features contributing tothe speed of the F.A.S.T system inoperation.

During warehouse project designstages, Cassioli’s simulation softwareallows sizing of the warehouseaccording to real customer require-ments, beginning with concrete dataand enabling easy calculation ofwarehouse dimensions, shelf sizes andthe number of stacker cranes required. The Automod® simulation systemanalyses the impact that flow timing, management policies and incoming andoutgoing product distribution in thewarehouse have in terms of performance, making accurate projections possible.

Even with the UK constructionoutput forecast to grow in 2014, itis understandable that the pennies

have to be looked after, but BrianMaddox, UK Sales Manager of LeitzTooling UK, believes there are massivehidden costs in compromising on tools. He says, “Our tools are sometimesperceived to be expensive but, if throughquality and consistency of service theylast twice as long - and in many caseslonger - than the alternatives, then it hasto be money well spent.”

“Customers who have invested inLeitz in the UK over the last 30 yearsunderstand this,” continues MrMaddox. “That part is simple, but thereis a lot more to using Leitz tools.Everything we make is manufactured toEN847 1-3, which means that everytool is tested to a high standard ofaccuracy and safety which helpsprolong the life of the tool and, ultimately, the machine itself. Our tools

give good finishes, which mean lesssanding and rectification, less coatingand ultimately, lower labour costs.

“What we call 'environmental issues'- labour costs, material cost, rectificationcost, downtime, setting costs, noiseissues, safety issues and dust issues toname a few - far outweigh toolingbudgets, but correct, quality tools canhave a fantastic positive impact onother costs.”

Explains Managing Director SimonLiddell, “We have many examples wherecustomers were changing tools everyshift. Now it's once per week. Otherareas where we have introduced newtechnology, such as our MC33 coatedtools, have seen dramatic improvement, with even better surface finishes, morecomponents produced per hour and alower tooling cost per component.”

A high quality sharpening service isanother key issue. Derek Statham, LeitzUK‘s service and works manager says,

“Sharpening TCT saws 12-15 times isrelatively easy but the ability to sharpenthe same saws to 20+ regrinds canreduce your overall tooling costs by50% or more. The high precisiongrinding service we provide can alsoyield longer service life betweensharpening or repair, resulting in fewertool changes, less machine down-timeand improved productivity - all of whichare big concerns for all our customers, whether they are small joineryworkshops or large manufacturers.”

One Leitz customer, Grant Westfield, produces 4,000 to 5,000 domesticshower panels per week in 9mmplywood, laminated both sides and PVAglue bonded. Cutting five stackedboards at a time, demanded a changeof saw blade every 300 to 400 boards. Atrial with Leitz Tooling had saw bladeslasting up to 1,358 boards.

Makita continues to innovate inthe power tool market and hasdeveloped twin 18v power toexpand their range. Two moreeconomical 18v lithium-ionbatteries allow the generation of36v power rather than the singlelarger battery option. Thisadvance has already seen aconverter plate allowing 18vbatteries to be attached to 36vmachines but now the latest bodies allow direct and compactinstallation of the two 18v cells into the machine itself.

Using twin 18v power the 36v DC motor in the DHR263 26mmrotary hammer drill generates 2.5 Joules of impact energy and up to4,800 blows per minute. The DHR263 has the standard SDS-PLUSchuck but there is also the DHR264 with an interchangeable quick-change SDS-PLUS to 3-jaw chuck.

The DHS710 LXT 190mm circular saw also fits two 18v batteriesand will run the blade up to 4,600rpm without load. The maximumcutting depth is 66mm at 90º and 49mm at 45º and the saw features asoft start and electric brake. It can also be connected to a dust vacuumsystem and the ergonomically designed handle allows perfect control.
