When there is significant change in a person’s behaviour, one is bound to think something is

wrong with the mental health of that person.

Here are a few signs that will help you identify the signs of mental illnesses:-

1. Constant anxiety: - It is true that we all feel anxious sometimes. However, if a person

seems to be anxious all the time, there is definitely something wrong. Due to such

extreme anxiety the person may also experience symptoms such as shortness of

breath, Heat palpitations, headache and restlessness.

2. Frequent emotional Outbursts: - People with mental disorders often experience

extreme mood swings. Dramatic mood changes which results in switching from

extreme sadness to extreme anger in a short while, is a major symptoms of mental

illness.

3. Insomnia: - A normal person generally requires 8 to 9 hours of sleep. If you notice a

persistent change in the sleeping pattern, it could be a sign of mental illness. Sleeping

too little or insomnia is a sure shot sign of depression.

4. Acting aloof and Withdrawn: - Everyone needs a little alone time occasionally.

However, if you notice someone completely withdraw from the daily activities of life

and avoid all types of social contact, it is a sign of mental illness. This behaviour is a

typical symptom of mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder,

depression etc.

5. Illogical thinking: - Unusual or exaggerated beliefs about personal powers or illogical

ways of understanding or influencing events. Also, illogical fantasies such as seeing

ghosts and aliens or “magical” thinking are characteristics of a metal disorder.

If you have been noticing the above symptoms in a friend or a loved one, you must urge them

to seek treatment from a psychiatrist, available on platforms such as Apollo Edoc, as soon as

possible. With medication and counselling all types of mental disorders can be cured

completely.
