    iTunes U

United College has invited Professor Inez Y S Fung, Professor of Atmospheric Sciences, University of California, Berkeley, USA, as the Distinguished Visiting Scholar in 2015-16. Professor Fung visited United College between 12 and 25 October 2015. Professor Fung is known of her pioneering role in laying the ground work in the new field of biogeoscience, her ingenuity in combining theory and measurements to prescribe observational constraints on complex processes, and her unique ability to bridge across the boundaries of traditional separate subdisciplines in the traditional earth sciences. Professor Fung is also credited as the lead architect of computer simulations of the myriad interactions between the carbon cycle, other biogeochemical cycles, various physical components of the Earth System, and human society.

In the lecture on CO2 Life Fantastic: the Global Carbon Cycle, Professor Fung highlighted that CO2 was both friend and foe. She reviewed the life cycle of CO2 in the terrestrial biosphere, the oceans, the geosphere and the atmosphere, as well as recent perturbations of the carbon cycle. Scientists found means to check if the increase in atmospheric CO2 was due to human activities; a new satellite, the Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2 (OCO2), launched on 2 July 2014, was expected to provide global observations of CO2 that would be useful for informing climate treaty verification.

In the second lecture on Plants, Water and Climate, Professor Fung affirmed that afforestation was something good. It has been proposed as a mechanism to reduce atmospheric CO2 and slow climate warming. She and her team carried out "thought experiments" with a global climate model to explore the climate consequences of large-scaled afforestation in the arctic, in mid-latitudes and the tropics. Because photosynthesis and transpiration shut down with droughts, the regional as well as remote climatic impacted vary with the availability of subsurface moisture. The lecture recordings will be uploaded in iTunes U later on.

Professor Jim Bishop Professor Inez Fung and husband Professor Jim Bishop had a campus tour in the University, and the photo was taken beside the Glorious United Man sculpture.

Professor Inez Y S Fung (2nd right) had a meeting with Professor Joseph Sung (2nd left), Vice-Chancellor and President of the University, accompanied by Professor Jimmy C M Yu (far right), College Head and Professor Gabriel N C Lau (far left), Director of the Institute of Environment, Energy and Sustainability.

Professor Inez Y S Fung attended the welcoming luncheon hosted by the College at the College Staff Common Room. Professor Fung expressed her feeling of leaving Hong Kong for decades, and really missed her place of birth.

2014 Professor Fung was invited as honorable guest of the Night Talk held at Si Yuan Amenities Centre. In which she shared her experience in study and research over the years, and told the attended students some interesting things happened in the inspection trip to the Antarctica in 2014.

1015 Professor Inez Y S Fung delivered her first public lecture at the Lecture Theatre 7 of Lee Shau Kee Building, and the topic was CO2 Life Fantastic: the Global Carbon Cycle.

Professor Inez Y S Fung mentioned in the lecture of Plants, Water and Climate that climate change would be the most important issue faced by the current and future generations of human beings.

  • Professor Amos Tai (right) of the Earth System Science Programme served as moderator of Professor Fungs (left) second public lecture.

1022 The farewell dinner in honour of the College Distinguished Visiting Scholar was held at the Hyatt Regency Shatin Hotel on 22 October 2015.

Professor Inez Y S Fung (middle) had a group photo with guests attending the lecture on Plants, Water and Climate.
