FACULTY AWARDS

President’s Award for Distinguished Service

Aaron CarpenterSince joining Wentworth, Aaron has continuously gone above and beyond in the area of service,

including service to the department, students, institute, profession, and the community as a whole.

From the moment he joined the institute, Aaron has proven to be an asset to the students, the

department, and the overall Wentworth community. Aaron has continuously demonstrated his

dedication to the institute and his students though his exceptional work in spearheading numerous

initiatives throughout the campus including advising student clubs, serving as chair and member of

member because of his willingness to get involved and make things happen. He is engaged and

passionate about making Wentworth a better place and it is! Aaron is truly deserving of this award.

President’s Award for Distinguished ScholarshipFrederick TrillingAssociate Professor Rick Trilling loves to write. His first article in an academic journal was published

years before he even began teaching. He has written dozens of articles spanning two decades,

almost all peer-reviewed and many submitted double-blind. However, writing for prestigious

publications has only been part of Rick’s scholarly work. Throughout the years his research has

matured from reviewing the state of a subject, to advancing it. In one lifetime, you are fortunate to

have an opportunity to pioneer a brand new area of an existing discipline. Rick has done so twice:

first, in the 1990’s, developing a framework for the business aspects of the practice of law (publishing

only the second academic article to propose what is now its own thriving sub-industry); and, five

years ago, the first person to address the need for higher education to develop managers for

cybersecurity (again, an area that has since become of well-recognized importance). He has

presented widely, including at Oxford University and to the US Army; has prepared grant submissions

Page 16: FIVE (5) YEARS OF SERVICE 2019_0.doc  · Web viewHe started in October 1979 as a mechanical trade worker apprentice and eventually became Maintenance “A” Plumber. Selwyn has

on behalf of the Institute; continues to consult on matters of business law for other lawyers; and has

even researched and written a novel – for fun. In his spare time, Rick is a student at Brown

University, pursuing a Master’s degree in Cybersecurity to add to his JD and MBA, in order to offer

better value to our students taking courses in the new Cybersecurity Management minor.

Congratulations, Rick!

President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching/Grant JohnsonMonica SnowDr. Monica Snow, Associate Professor in the Myles and Eugenia Sweeney Department of

Construction Management (CM), has been recognized this year with the President’s Award for

Distinguished Teaching. Professor Snow is an outstanding educator, a compassionate advisor, a

wise mentor for her teaching colleagues, and a role model for faculty and students both from inside

and outside her department. In addition to support from her Wentworth colleagues, Professor Snow

received many enthusiastic letters of support from Wentworth students and alumni. She is known for

her passion for, and knowledge of, her subject matter. She teaches some of her department’s most

challenging courses in a structured and straightforward way, making even the most challenging topics

easy to understand. Students describe Professor Snow as the professor that everyone wants to have,

and her classes fill up quickly. Continually seeking out new methods of instruction Professor Snow

uses interactive teaching, case studies, and hands-on projects to keep her students highly motivated.

She develops inspiring relationships with all her students, making herself available to them not only

during office hours but late in the evening and on weekends. This dedication was especially in

evidence when she held lab sessions for CONM2100 starting from 7 AM so students could participate

in the Red Sox 2018 parade. One student noted that Professor Snow is particularly welcoming and

understanding for returning veterans. Professor Snow has served as the faculty advisor for the CM

Student Club and is an advisor to the National Association of Home Builders, (NAHB) Student

Chapter at Wentworth. Dr. Snow was awarded a Bistline Grant to attend a training workshop on

timber frame design and joinery which she will use to enhance the experiential learning in her

CONM3800 – Timber Framing class. In 2013 she was inducted into Sigma Lambda Chi, the

International Construction honorary society which recognizes professional individuals in construction.

Professor Snow is an exceptional teacher and colleague. Her dedication and commitment for

improving the quality of education for Wentworth students, at both the undergraduate and graduate

levels, makes her an outstanding educator.

President’s Award for Distinguished Academic AdvisingJoseph Martel-FoleyDr. Joe Martel-Foley, of the Biomedical Engineering Department, is awarded the 2019 President’s

Award for Distinguished Academic Advising. In the only student-nominated category of the four

Faculty Awards, Joe received far and away the most nominations for distinguished advising. Many

students mentioned Joe’s openness, approachability and positive nature. In addition to being a

tirelessly dedicated advisor to his own advisees (and many students besides those officially assigned

to him), Joe Martel-Foley has been a driving force behind the wider Academic Advising Initiative at

Wentworth. With the departure of Joan Giblin, Associate Dean of Academic Advising and Student

Success in March 2018, Joe took on the leadership of the Academic Advising Initiative. In this role, he

has been at the forefront of addressing many of the challenges that face advising at Wentworth. He

led the development of an advising mission statement that detailed the values underlying Wentworth

advising, and oversaw the shift to a system of First Year Advisors from the College of Arts and

Sciences. Students previously were transitioned to Major Advisors in sophomore year. As the new

team in the Center for Academic Excellence assembled, Joe was there throughout to welcome and

orient the new members and ensure continuity. He also, in Summer of 2018, invested massive

amounts of time and effort in assigning First Year and Major Advisors to ensure equitable and

reduced loads. This foundational work helped to ensure a smooth transition for the first cohort of

freshmen to move between First Year and Major Advisors in Spring/Summer 2019. One student said

it best: “Joe goes absolutely above and beyond and pushes for better academics for students. He

strives to help students succeed. Joe advocates for us.

I know I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for Joe.”

RETIREESPriscilla Biondi – 37 years of servicePriscilla began at Wentworth in, 1981, when the college was a 2+2 school, awarding Associate’s and

Bachelor’s degrees, where security was provided by a rental force, and during a time when students

were expected to attend class even in the most inclement weather. Priscilla was hired as the evening

and weekend librarian, a schedule which allowed her to work late hours and avoid rush hour traffic on

both ends of the day! She previously was the director of an insurance library in Boston’s financial

district. Being a perennial student (she came here after receiving a third Master’s degree) Priscilla

looked forward to working in a college library. However, Wentworth was far different than the other

libraries she had known – with students showing up in work boots and the sounds of metal chairs

scraping on hard-surface floors. Digital technology first appeared at Wentworth in the library. Priscilla

learned to use an OCLC terminal for cataloging and interlibrary loan in the early days of the internet.

The library at that time also had a media center with audiovisual equipment. The librarians were

responsible for providing word processing instruction to such an extent that it led to the establishment

of a Learning Center within the library, ultimately becoming the Academic Resource Center, and later,

the Center for Academic Excellence. Priscilla enjoyed attending lectures on architecture and design

as an associate member of the Boston Society of Architects. She selected books as well as

databases for that discipline and did the same for Industrial Design and Facility Management when

those programs were established. As a member of the Boston Design Librarians, Priscilla attended

the American Institute of Architects conventions. She served as Secretary of the Association of

Architectural Librarians for six years, and later joined the Association of Architectural School

Librarians. In her 37 years, Priscilla is fortunate to witness the transformation of the library from a

brick-and-mortar building housing print collections to a global digital presence on the World Wide

Web. Have a wonderful retirement, Priscilla!

Charles Cimino – 28 Years of ServiceWentworth recognizes Professor Charlie Cimino as he retires after 28 years of service to the

Architecture Department.  The department appreciates his commitment to the professional education

of young aspiring architects and is thankful for all the energy and hard work that he has put towards

EPIC learning initiatives. He was a leader regarding EPIC-based studios and exceled at bringing

professionals from the allied disciplines together to share design ideas and strategic visions for the

future of neighborhoods in the Greater Boston area. His work on the EPIC studio for Medfield State

Hospital had more than 90 students from 6 different majors participating. Throughout the project he

actively communicated with the town of Medfield and its various officials as he helped the town

develop feasibility studies for the project through studio-based explorations. Charlie worked with

designers and planners on a feasibility study for the Bowker Overpass off of Storrow Drive.

Congratulations on your retirement, Charlie!
