    Background

    Deloitte Access Economics was commissioned by Fitness Australia

    to conduct a survey o businesses in the ftness industry to

    provide a detailed overview o the industry in 2012. This report

    ollows an earlier report, the Fitness Industry Workorce Report

    2012 which documented the supply and demand o ftness

    proessionals in Australia, with projections or the uture. This

    State o the Industry Report 2012 is an important companion

    document to the Fitness Industry Workorce Report 2012.

    Service subsectors the ftness industry is characterised by a range o dierent business models rom small personal training

    studios to large multi-national chains. Industry oerings likewise, are just as diverse.

    Client Profle over 4 million Australians participate in ftness industry activities.

    Users o acilities are typically within the range o 25A-34 years o age, with higher rates o emale to male participation.

    Industry comparison ftness industry relative to the broader industry group o sport and recreation has been growing

    at a aster rate with respect to employment, revenue and value added.

    Economic outlook despite the impacts o GFC the industry is expected to continue to grow and levels o community

    participation in ftness will continue to increase.

    Industry innovation considered to be the primary driver in shaping the uture o the ftness industry. There is an increasing need

    to meet changing consumer preerences and to develop a greater capacity to integrate advanced technology in service provision.
