FIT spread of membership The map below gives an indication of FIT membership around the world. Following that is a map of Europe, making the spread there a little easier to see. A member list follows the maps. The white dots are regular members. The yellow dots are associate members. The red dots are observer members. Bald areas Africa is the big blank – all of three members out of a total of 54 countries. There is plenty of work to be done there! Other areas that could be looked at: • The Middle East: the various Arab countries, Lebanon (which has three associate members but no regular member), Jordan • The “stans”: Uzbekistan (there is an observer member there), Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Taj ikistan. However, except possibly for Pakistan, one might wonder whether there is much translation done there and how easy it would be to establish associations. • Southern Asia: Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, Sri Lanka, Singapore • There are a few gaps on the far east of Europe: Ukraine (I think there used to be a member there, but they left), Belarus, Latvia, Estonia Possibly useful contacts in Africa Below is a list of details that I have received through SATI. They could be useful to the Council in establishing the local situation in these countries regarding whether there is any association and the possibility of starting one. Eleanor’s university contacts are also useful in the same way. East Africa Interpreters and Translators Association After attending the IAPTI international conference in 2014, and hearing all the presentations and the passion that IAPTI has in fighting for translators and interpreters, I decided that we need to also do the same in Kenya. I contacted a few of my fellow freelancers and we talked on how to form an association that will be our voice in Kenya and East Africa as a whole. The journey began in ...2015 around June and by September we had found a lawyer to do the registration for us. The pace for doing things in Africa is quite different compared to Europe and other parts of the world. So we waited for many months, one or two people thought we would not make it. However we waited anxiously for the ‘white smoke’ and bingo, it blew from the registrar of societies’ chimney and we got our association registered. EAITA is unique and draws its model from IAPTI. We don’t register companies or agencies but rather individual freelancers. We have made registration fees match Africa’s economic levels and thus very affordable to be a member. Thanks IAPTI for showing us that we can fight, fight hard and win. The journey has just begun and we will get there!!!
