K ey highlights from the Fit For Work Report

Up to 11% of the working age population in Ireland have an illness or injury thataffects their ability to work ( EU average is 16%)

MSD¶s are the most commonly reported cause of work related ill health inIreland

± costing the economy ¼750 million a year

± 7m lost working days per annum

MSD¶s account for twice the number of days lost through stress

25% of people with RA stop work within 5 years

Full time employment amongst people with RA is very low at 22%

Ireland has lowest ratio of rheumatologists per head of population in Europe

± 1 per 400k versus 1 per 80k optimum (W.H.O.)

MSD¶s will increase in Ireland- By 2030 greater than 60% will be over the age of 50



84% of participants said that having attended

the program they felt confident in coping with

their condition and working life

Gaps identified

Maximum patient capacity per four week

program is 20

No link back to the employer

Not integrated with the FFW policy program

2. A National Plan for MSD¶s

± Rheumatology is now one of the Clinical Lead Programmes of HSE ± Prof. Oliver FitzGerald appointed National Clinical Director for Rheumatology

± National standard referral process for GP¶s

± Proposal accepted to develop 20 Physio led MSD clinics



Physio Led MSD Clinic

GP refers patient with MSD to MSD clinic

MSD trained physio Triage

Patient treated appropriately

± Personal rehab programme

± Referred to rheumatology

A return to functional capacity, and a sustainedreturn to work where appropriate, should be keyindicators of clinical success in the treatment of working-age people

Challenge is linking with Employer
