Definition

Pitot tube is an instrument that use to measure the pressure and flow rate

of fluid (air)

Created ByAn Engineer from France named Henri Pitot in the beginning of 1700 and modified to modern design in the middle of 1800 by France Scientist named Henry Darcy

Work Principle

Pitot Tube

With measuring the height differences of mercury in the manometer, the velocity of fluid can be determined in the pitot tube.

P = Pressure (Pa)p = density (kg/m3)

p’ = density Hg (kg/m3)g = gravitation (m/s2)

h = high (m)v = velocity (m/s)

APPLICATION

• Measure air speed on the airplane.• Determine the amount of coolant that was in

the room to tell at a hotel.• Determine the speed of the wind in the

tunnel.• Venturimeter with manometer

Sample Question

If air (p = 129 kg/m3) flowed into the pipe pitot, and the difference in height of mercury (pHg = 13.6 g/cm3)

at the manometer 3 cm.Calculate the air flow speed!

Page 9: Fisika Tabung Pitot / Pitot Tube SMAKBO 57 2012

Known : p = 129 kg/m3

p’ = 13,6 g/cm3

g = 10m/s2)h = 3 cm

Ask : v…?

Conclusion• Pitot tube is an instrument that use to measure the

pressure and flow rate of fluid (air)• The same manometer feet high, then h1 = h2• The air that is flowing at first much smaller tubes,

then v1=0• Has this formula :
