Fishing is a great past time, which requires a lot of patience and time. In this presentation I will discuss the few basic types of fishing and equipment that are generally used around the world. The 3 types include bait fishing, lures and fly fishing.

“The problems of the modern anglers are still those of his ancestor: where to find fish, how to approach them, and what sort of bait to use” (3)

1.BAIT FISHING- USE OF LIVE BAIT (WORMS, CRICKETS, SMALL FISH, EGGS) OR ARTIFICIAL FOODS (POWER BAIT, RUBBER WORMS)

2.LURE- USUALLY MADE OF METAL OR PLASTIC. PAINTED DIFFERENT COLORS TO MAKE FLAMBOYANT AND APPETIZING

3.FLY FISHING- USE OF IMITATION FLY'S AND INSECTS FOUND AROUND LAKES AND RIVERS

I. Bait Fishing

The most basic of fishing and the most common type of fishing for younger fisher folk

There are a few components to bait fishing1. basic setup. 2. casting.3. waiting

Bait fishing

Basic setup

1.Weights- weights hold down part of the line when bait fishing. It allows the bait to float at a certain height above the ground.

2.Swivel- holds weights back from sliding down line. “The main purpose of the swivel is to allow the line to untwist during line retrieval, preventing undesirable tangling.” (2)

3.Leader line- extra line tied to swivels or end of another fishing line. Allows you to extend the length of your line

4.Hook (treble or worm hook)- three prongs on a treble hook and just one “J” hook on a worm hook.

5. Bait ( live or artificial)- powerbait-wide range of colors-, worms, salmon eggs, plastic worms/fish

Casting

Casting is really important when it comes to bait fishing, just because you have so much weight and parts to your setup you don’t want to loose anything.

Step by step directions 1. Bring around over your shoulder2. Flip reel so line will release as you cast3. Cast over head releasing line as the pole comes in front of you4. When weight, swivel and bait hit the water wait a few second

to it will sink.5. Flip the reel bar (Bail) so that you can reel it in when there's a

fish at the end of your line.

Waiting

Bait casting takes some time, unless your lucky and you catch a fish as soon as you cast.

Just watch the tip of your pole. When you see it bending start reeling.

Page 10: Fishing basic types of fishing by Jake Gallegos

“The purpose of the lure is to use movement, color, and vibration to grab the fish's attention and cause him to bite the hook.” (4)

There are hundreds of different types of lure with each its own color.

Also different types of fish go after different types of lures.

Pretty easy concept, cast and reel back in.1.Set up2.style 3. types

For lure fishing its pretty basic just tie your fishing know to the eye of the lure and cast

there is no need for leader or weights, all though some people may attach a swivel to prevent twisting of the line.

Page 12: Fishing basic types of fishing by Jake Gallegos

Lures act as smaller bait for fish so you want to try to mimic the real thing.

This can be done by just flicking your pole up, down, left, or right.

Different lures have different patterns of moving. Sinking, jumping, floating, swimming

Try whatever seems most relevant.

And Movement

Types of lures

• Different fish, different lures.

Some Examples; 1. Panther martin- lake or river 2. kastmaster- lake or river3. Rapala- ocean, lake, river4. Squids- ocean fishing5. Frogs- river, lake 6. Jigs- lake, river, ocean

Page 14: Fishing basic types of fishing by Jake Gallegos

One of the hardest types of fishing. This style requires a lot of practice and talent.

Page 15: Fishing basic types of fishing by Jake Gallegos

10 and 2 castingwhen your bringing your rod and

line forward you want to come to about 10 o’clock and when going backward stop at around 2 o clock.

The line when casting should look like a “J” unfolding.

Page 16: Fishing basic types of fishing by Jake Gallegos

As brought forward the line will roll forward creating a front loop

When line is straight you can bring it back for a longer cast or lay the line down to begin reeling it in

Page 17: Fishing basic types of fishing by Jake Gallegos

Just like lures there are hundreds of different fly's that are used for different fish and different areas.

Most fly’s are hand made, and because there so small there kind of pricey

Components of a fly are; hook, lead, threads, feathers, fabrics, beads, glue.

Fly fishing line is different from regular line. They are a lot thinker in diameter and not easily broken.

It comes it 3 types floating, intermediate, and sinking

In fly fishing your not casting the fly, like you would in lure or bait fishing. You are casting the line which is why it is so much thicker and heavier than regular fishing line.

Leaders are attached to fly line for lower visibility to the fish.

Page 20: Fishing basic types of fishing by Jake Gallegos

“THEY seem to take a masochistic pride in making it hard to catch fish. Instead of lobbing a weighty lure with a stout pole, fly-fishermen spend years perfecting the looping casts that court entanglement on every nearby branch”(4)

“…the most skittish species as a test of skill.”(5)

Types of fishing conclusion

• That concludes the 3 basic types of fishing 1. Bait fishing

• Set-up; weights, swivels, leader, hooks and bait • Casting; over head or shoulder and let sink before you flip the bail• Time, wait for the fish and watch the tip

2. Lure• Swivels are optional• Types of lures • Style and movement

3. Fly fishing• 10 and 2 casting, and creating a loop • Flies• Floating, intermediate, and sinking lines

Equipment/ clothing

• Fishing pole- different range of sizes, materials, and uses

• Reel/line- spinning, bait casting, fly reel

• Vest/ tackle box• Clippers• Hemostats• License

These are the basic things you will need to start fishing. Everything listed has a different size and/or different use for the type of fishing you will be doing.

Fishing poles There are thousands of poles available on the market today.

Each has a certain weight a certain length and a different

use. To list the basics they are;

• Ocean poles- much stronger and thicker compared to a lake or river

pole. Some are shorter but stronger for catching big fish

• Regular poles- usually at a max. length of 6 to 7 feet. These are the

most used and common poles when it comes to river or lake fishing.

• Fly rods- some of the longer poles in fishing, reaching from 6 to 10 ft

long. Many types of materials, mainly carbon. Specially designed for

casting thicker fly lines.

REEL’s The main component on a fishing pole.

There are a few types of reels but the most common are.

1. Spinning reel- ”The Spinning Reel is the most common type of reel you will encounter. This reel has a visible, exposed, spool with a wire loop called a bail that moves around the spool as you crank the line back in” (1)

Reels cont.Baitcasting reel- “This type of reel is mounted on top

of the rod…, like a miniature winch. The spool is arranged perpendicular to the plane of the rod. ” (1)

Reels cont.Fly Fishing reel- “The fly fishing reel is the simplest

design of all the fishing reels, and consists of a drum-like spool with a hole in it to play the line out.” (1)

Page 27: Fishing basic types of fishing by Jake Gallegos

Vest and tackle boxVests- usually the best way to keep everything with you

and making it lightweight

Tackle box- keep all your hooks, baits swivels,

fishing line, lures organized in one box

Page 28: Fishing basic types of fishing by Jake Gallegos

Clippers- cutting fishing line made easy.

Just don’t cut the wrong end!!

Hemostats- easy hook removal

License- daily or annual license’ available
