Various sources say the tune is believed to have been written by James A. Fishar, ballet director of the RoyalTheater at Covent Gardens in the 1770’s. It was called "Hornpipe 1" in a collection of dance tunes he published,"Sixteen Cotillons Sixteen Minuets Twelve Allemands and Twelve Hornpipes" (John Rutherford, London,1778).
