Integrative Instruction at Fisher“Since problems in the real world do not come neatly labeled as being finance, marketing or strategy problems, corporate leaders need to develop skills to integrate their functional knowledge. We co-teach a course on mergers and acquisitions that takes such an integrative and multidisciplinary view.”

The Fisher EMBA program is structured to provide minimal disruption to your busy work schedule and personal life. On-campus sessions meet three consecutive days a month (on Thursday, Friday and Saturday) over an 18-month program period, which begins each January and concludes in May of the following year. For more information about life as an EMBA student, please see the student profiles on pages 12 and 13.

While in the program, you have access to a customized program web site that keeps you informed and in touch with the program and

classmates while you are away from campus. Your account is available 24 hours a day, allowing you to organize your course load and submit assignments and exams according to your schedule.

At the end of the program, you will have an opportunity to test your skills by developing a business plan and submitting it to Fisher’s annual Deloitte & Touche $145,000 Business Plan Competition, sponsored by the Center for Entrepreneurship.

At Fisher, we know the world of business is complex and often unpredictable—that today’s business challenges are multidimensional and do not come neatly packaged and labeled “marketing” or “finance.” That’s why we’ve developed a comprehensive, integrative program that examines today’s issues from every angle to give you a total business perspective.

The Fisher EMBA curriculum is presented in five learning modules consisting of a solid foundation of business management core courses and electives that incorporate business fundamentals with current issues relevant to today’s business managers.

Orientation The Fisher EMBA program and orientation week begins with a simulation exercise that lets you test your knowledge of comprehensive business functions and decision-making skills working in teams.

For participants whose previous education and career experience have not provided an adequate introduction to basic business skills, the orientation features non-credit core concept reviews in accounting, microeconomics and statistics.

Core CoursesCore courses present the fundamentals of business to help you develop the managerial thinking skills you will need to become a source of competitive advantage for your firm.

International Business TripA required international experience—offered only to program participants—provides an excellent opportunity for you to understand the challenges faced by business managers operating overseas.

Elective and Cross-Disciplinary CoursesElective courses provide in-depth exploration of a current business issue. Each class selects electives for the final module through a democratic process. Students may choose from existing Fisher courses, or new courses can be developed. Fisher EMBA faculty accept significant input from the class to create a customized classroom experience.

Business Plan At the end of the program, you will have an opportunity to test your skills by developing a business plan and submitting it to Fisher’s annual Deloitte & Touche $145,000 Business Plan Competition, sponsored by the Center for Entrepreneurship.

“The Fisher Executive MBA program is consistently recognized, nationally and internationally, for excellence in working with busy professionals to achieve their career goals. I had the opportunity to attend other EMBA programs, but none that combined the expert faculty and diverse background of students within such a stimulating and interactive learning environment. The fast pace of the program, flexible schedule and team-based approach to learning facilitates the development of new skill sets essential for success in the business world.”

John YoungEMBA Class of 2010Professor of Medicine Director, Cardiovascular Innovation ProgramThe Ohio State University Medical Center

“As a physician and surgeon, I had 30 years of education in the science and art of medicine, but no training in the business of health care delivery. Two years ago I shared my lack of business knowledge with Joe Alutto, former dean of Fisher College of Business. He advised me to join the Executive MBA program to further my professional development. Working in a team environment with high-level executives as class-mates and under the guidance of world-class faculty over this past year has allowed me to grow into a skilled business leader. The Executive MBA has given me the knowledge necessary to manage the entire spectrum of health care delivery, from managing a medical practice to managing a hospital or insurance entity. The overall experience has been priceless.“

A Global PerspectiveRecognizing that successful decision making may often depend on how well you understand the current global business environment, the Fisher EMBA curriculum incorporates a global perspective that forms an integrative thread throughout the program.

Topics and issues are viewed not only with the total organization in mind but also in the context of their socioeconomic, political and cultural environments.

7

fisher.osu.edu/emba

An international business course focuses specifically on the international dimension of today’s management problems. In January 2009, the EMBAs travelled to Beijing, Shanghai, Dongguan and Hong Kong as part of their international business course. In addition to the program site visits, students are also required to organize a team site visit with a company of their choice.

“I put my EMBA to the test every day. I can honestly say there has not been a day when a new challenge has not tested my capabilities across all fronts. Fisher’s EMBA program gave me a more balanced approach to business situations, which has been especially helpful in my role with Ashland in China.”

Dale M. MacDonaldEMBA Class of 2002 President–Asia Pacific Ashland

“I lived in China in 1989, and this trip, 20 years later, was an eye-opening look at a country that has changed dramatically, in large part to the recent explosion of business in China. Our site visits to multinational and domestic firms provided an insider‘s look at how business is conducted in China, which was perspective- changing on many levels.”

“The EMBA classroom experience has been the highlight of the program for me. Our cohort is filled with an extraordinary and diverse mix of students who are passionate about exchanging ideas and learning from accomplished professors and each other. One of our most memorable classroom discussions involved the AIDS crisis in Africa—its political, economic and social implications. There were moments of discovery, frustration and heated debate, with a shared sense of compassion. It became clear to me that we all have a responsibility for the discovery of solutions to such global challenges. I have been fortunate to have had this opportunity to learn from such talented individuals, and I am inspired to make a difference after every classroom session.”

Past events have included gallery tours, college and professional sporting events, and holiday theme nights. Your class will become a tightly knit network that will link you to resources and contacts long after graduation.

Welcome to Our World: The Life of Fisher EMBAs“American, Continental, Delta and US Airways all offer nonstop flights to Columbus from LaGuardia, and the flight is about an hour. Once in Columbus, I head for my hotel where I usually bump into some of my peers, professors and occasionally Ohio State President Gordon Gee in the lobby. My classmates who travel in for the program usually meet up for a cocktail before retiring for the evening.

Day 1 Breakfast is available from 7 to 8 a.m., and the morning class session begins promptly at 8 a.m. There are multiple breaks during each teaching block so there is ample time to discuss the day’s subject material with professors, teammates or other class members. Lunch follows from noon to 1 p.m. and, weather permitting, we have it outside on the terrace, which is especially nice! The afternoon session runs from 1 to 5 p.m. and covers a different subject. For example, if we have Business Strategy in the morning, we might have Managerial Economics or Organizational Behavior in the afternoon. After the Thursday evening executive speaker session, my team usually heads out for dinner together, which provides an opportunity to clarify any outstanding items on the session’s assignments.

Days 2 and 3 After a second day of captivating and challenging classroom education, the Friday night social event comes just in time! As a class ‘cruise director,’ I set up Friday evening social events remotely, and I’m always excited to see how everything comes together. Some of these events are family events where students are encouraged to bring family and friends so they understand the rigorous process, get to know team members and, most importantly, understand how much we appreciate their continued support throughout the program. Saturday is another full day of classes. Before I know it, the clock strikes 5 p.m., and I head back to the airport to catch my flight to the city. I’m usually back to my apartment no later than 9:30 p.m. on Saturday nights—just enough time to meet friends out for a late dinner/drinks or catch up on my TiVo favorites and order take-out in my pajamas.“

“I am currently the senior director of Operations for the OhioHealth Medical Specialty Foundation. I am responsible for the operations and strategy of the specialty physician practices (cardiology, neurosurgery, vascular surgery, plastic surgery, orthopedic trauma, etc.) that OhioHealth employs. This involves practice acquisition, strategy to align with the hospitals, physician contracting and day-to-day operations of the practices.

The art of time managementA program of this caliber requires a true commitment to fully realize the benefits, so time management becomes incredibly important. With a full-time job, six children and some Little League coaching duties thrown in for fun, I realized from the beginning that I would have to rearrange my schedule and be very disciplined about the time that I spent with each component. I spend approximately seven-and-a-half hours on reading and assignments during the week, and I put in about another 10 hours on the weekends, depending on the number of case analyses or tests. You learn to rely on your team for support, which makes the workload more manageable. Additionally, the Fisher EMBA staff truly promotes family involvement, and the support that I have received from my family has been exceptional.

Phenomenal programThe Fisher EMBA program is simply phenomenal. This is a program that fosters tremendous collaboration and active learning through the classroom sessions, case study analysis and group work. The strategically focused curriculum is taught by world-class faculty who bring corporate experiences to the classroom and represent a variety of businesses and industries that have made the application of this knowledge very relevant to me. Class sessions are intense, stimulating and challenging. The diversity of the class offers completely different perspectives and an opportunity to broaden one’s thinking in areas in which you may or may not have been previously exposed. At the same time, you develop new business contacts and relationships that will carry forward long after the program concludes.” James YorkEMBA Class of 2009Senior Director of OperationsOhioHealth

“I have enjoyed teaching entrepreneurship to the EMBA students because I love watching creativity take over. Frankly, much of American business is stultifying and rigid. We have been driven by tools like Excel and PowerPoint into believing that ’bits‘ on a screen are actually reality and truth, that bullet points in a row reflect logical and thus irrefutable facts. The world is much messier than that, with emotions, instinct and gut being the real drivers of our behavior. In entrepreneurship we don’t look for the ‘right‘ answer. We look for the right questions over a broad range of analysis. It’s fun to liberate oneself from the artificial right/wrong, success/fail dichotomies.”

“I was attracted to Fisher’s EMBA program for its repu-tation and caliber of peers: people who have already advanced in their professional lives. The students who get into this program are driven and motivated and on a career fast track in very diverse fields. When I started the program, my view of the network was lim-ited, but what I found is that it’s about cross-leveraging ideas, knowledge and insights that may be specific to a particular organization or may cross industries. My classmates and I leverage one another to become better-informed professionals and more valuable to our companies: we help and inspire each other. The Fisher experience allowed me to foster lifelong professional and personal connections with other business leaders.”

In recognition of his commitment, the college was named the Max M. Fisher College of Business.
