ANZAC Celebrations We had a great write up in the local papers regarding
our recent ANZAC Incursion and have had some
positive feedback from our students and parents.
Saturday our school captains will proudly lay a wreath
at the cenotaph kindly arranged by Nadia Stefani. The
ANZAC March and laying of wreaths will be followed
by a ceremony with our students singing at the hall.
In 2013, we were invited to apply to participate in the
National Trust of Australia (Victoria)’s Gallipoli Oaks
Project. This week we received our oak seedling which
has been slowly growing. It is a direct descendant of
the acorns from Gallipoli. Our Environmental Leaders in
conjunction with the Fish Creek RSL will be planting
the seedling soon and in doing so our school will have its
own direct link to the environment that the soldiers
endured during the campaign. At the core of this project
is the story of how a young Australian soldier, Captain
Winter Cooke from Murndal, near Hamilton, noticed some unusual holly bushes while stationed at Gallipoli that had
acorns like oak trees. Captain Winter Cooke remembered that his Uncle Samuel in Hamilton was a bit of a tree
enthusiast; someone that would be interested in these rare acorns, and so sent a package of acorns to him from
Gallipoli almost 100 years ago.Our involvement in Anzac Celebrations continues the tradition of remembering those
who have fought in various campaigns for our freedom whilst developing a strong sense of community spirit and
involvement in our students…our future.

Parent Payments
Thank you to everyone who has made
prompt payment at this busy time. It has
been brought to our attention that the
BSB number in some Signmee notes may
have been incorrect. Please note the
correct BSB is 063820. However, this will
change soon as we are changing over to Bendigo Bank.
We will let you know as soon as this happens and give
you the new details. Also, a reminder that if you are
paying online we need your surname as the reference.
We understand that some families may be experiencing
financial hardships and always encourage them to
contact the school to make payment arrangements. Our
staff try to keep the cost of activities to a minimum
and often our Parent’s Club and community sponsorship
help to subsidise these activities. School Council will be
reviewing the parent payment policy and this will be
updated in December.

MAY DAY VEGGIE GARDEN WORKING BEE
Hello parents, friends and garden enthusiasts,
When I first arrived at Fishy I was impressed by the
wonderful space created to grow food. A lot of work has
gone into building veggie boxes and composting bins as
well as purchasing the necessary gardening equipment.
Congratulations to all those who have been involved with
this exciting project.
Next Friday we will be having a working bee. Our aim is
to replenish the soil with nutrients and organic material,
getting it ready for planting. Hopefully we can get our
patch producing loads of fresh organic veggies ASAP.
It would be very helpful if you could spare an hour or
two before picking up the kids to get the garden up and
running again. Working Bee will start from 12pm.
Thanks for your support,
Miss Carmen

Alison Lester Workshops
On Wednesday Grades 3, 4 and 5 spent the afternoon with
Alison Lester. We are really lucky to have her gallery in our
town and to get to work with her because she was Australia’s
first Children's Laureate in 2011 and some of her books were
written about our local area. Her book ‘Magic Beach’ is really
Walkerville South. The boys went with John at the shop for
the first hour and he talked about Alison’s books and her
work. He told us the story behind some of her stories, like
how she spent a lot of time in Antarctica and got kids to draw
her pictures about what she was seeing and doing and emailed
them to her. She then used them in her book ‘Sophie Scott
Goes South’. We looked at Alison’s drawings that she did for
some of her books and then did a quiz about them. We had to
go around the gallery and find all the answers. The boys did
better than the girls! Alison showed us some of her techniques for working with watercolour paints and we
got to paint a postcard using them. It was a bit tricky at times, trying to mix the colours, but our pictures
looked really good when they were finished. We were
pretty proud of our efforts!
South Gippsland Leadership Conference
On Tuesday the School and Vice Captains went to a
Leadership day in Korumburra. We did lots of fun
activities. We met Leigh brown and did a football clinic
and we were on T.V. We also met Eleanor Patterson who
won a Gold Medal at the Commonwealth Games. We all
had a great day and it was very entertaining.
Sports Report By Karla & Lochie G
In Sport the senior students have been doing the rest of
the athletic events that they missed out on due to it
being cancelled. Yesterday Prep-Gr 2 had an Auskick session, learning new skills in football. Winter Sports starts
next Friday for Gr 5/6.
KidsMatter Update
KidsMatter had an enjoyable and productive meeting on Tuesday morning. During the meeting we discussed the
annual VIP Day - this will be an exciting day where students are able to invite someone special to come to the
school. Students will work with their ‘special’ person to create an art piece and will then be invited to stay for a
picnic lunch. We will be holding this very special day during the week of 17th - 23rd May - Education Week. Stay
tuned for the exact date.
We look forward to hearing from as many members of our community for ideas and feedback about the events and
opportunities provided for our parents, and certainly appreciated the overwhelmingly positive feedback we have
received about our evening with Terry Guildford. Certainly those who attended were able to use some of her tips
and strategies straight away. please don’t hesitate to contact any member of the KidsMatter Action Team to make
more suggestions for building on an already close community/school relationship.
We are investigating the potential to create a mural on the wall of the Performing
Arts Room, so that our school visitors will have, as their first impression of our
school community, a sense of the vibrant and creative community we are.
