Game Fishing NaƟonals This started like every Nationals, several weeks earlier with me & Had’s (Don Haddon) talking up the prospect of slaying large Blue Marlin at Waihau Bay in the eastern Bay of Plenty, home to some of New Zealand’s largest blues with a super close fishery putting the lures in 3 miles from the ramp. This year we used a McLay 680 with an Evinrude E-tec 200 HO strapped to the back of it, looking like a formidable platform to head south with. We arrived at James farm which is a 5 minute ride to the ramp, set up camp & got the boat sorted then started the great debate of which lures & where to troll them over a couple of coldies. Day 2 Sunday, up at a cracking pace, 8.30am down to the ramp. Off to the secret spot in the middle of the bay, 15 mins away from the ramp then out with the chosen lures. Had only one shot with a large blue smashing the Bagwan Blue Angel on the port rigger, ripping out a heap of line then, next minute it's off the starboard corner in the air heading back across to the portside & gone. Psycho Fish!!! Day 3 Monday, towed baits most of the morning & lures in the arvo. No bites, damn it! Day 4 Tuesday, back out to where we had the shot on Sunday. Was morning tea time and had the jug on waiting for it to boil, sure as s#!t a fish had come in & grabbed the short lure on the port side, didn’t see the fish & it initially didn’t take a lot of line, I thought it might have been a shark? After about 3 minutes & ¾ of an empty 80w I guessed a little different! At one stage we charged forward for a nautical mile at 20 knots just to keep the line tight, this happened a further two more times. These fish are crazy! An hour & a half later we had come to a stalemate with the fish 80m straight underneath us. No one was winning, time to sunset it, clamp down on the spool & try to plane the fish up before it died. With Had’s not happy about losing any line & telling us so after fighting so hard to get it, slowly driving away putting some angle on paid off with the fish slowly coming to the surface just kicking, in went the tag just in case, very quickly followed by the flyers! 2 hours after first hooking it, it was in the boat! A cheeky celebratory ale & call to the weigh station then we were on our way back. The Blue Marlin weighed 222kg, & straight off to smokey. We went out again the following days and chased some bottom fish. At the end of the week we still had the heaviest weighed fish for Waihau Bay Club taking out the Heaviest Marlin trophy & the sweepstake, with Waihau Bay taking out the Billfish Fish section of the Nationals. Fish ALL Year? Just Add: 1 Shot of Cement - 1 New Set Outdoor Cloth-ing

Coming up to Christmas the Snapper spawned right on schedule then moved into Auckland’s channels as they normally do. What wasn’t normal is a massive population of Snapper that moved into the actual harbour & are still there at the moment. To see dozens & dozens of runabouts fishing off the container terminal, the bottom end of Queen St, the Naval Base, under the harbour bridge & Chelsea Sugar works has been quite amazing. These fish have stayed in this area for over two months amongst container ships, cruise liner’s, ferry’s & assorted shipping moving through daily. They're not just small Snapper, there are some really big fish amongst this large school, overseas visitors cannot believe we’re pulling out healthy fish on the doorstep of our biggest city. West Coast Snapper fishing has been great again this year & as we look forward to Autumn & Winter, we will see the gurnard return in big numbers in the harbours & the Hauraki Gulf. Teriyaki & Hapuka will move in shallow & we have some wonderful calm days coming up, don’t put your gear or boat away. It is some best boating you’ll ever get, no holiday crowds! We have a huge range of outdoor clothing available so you can fish all year round. Also rock & beach fishing is always a great alternative if the weather is dubious for boating.

Game fishing is still going off on both coasts highlighted by the capture of some huge marlin. Some pending NZ & possibly world records up for grabs. Remember the marlin fishery up North continues strongly into June. Plenty to look forward to on the fishing sce-ne, you just have to make time to get out there & enjoy it.

Diving with Rog…… It’s been good to see the newly certified divers have been getting out in the water & reaping the rewards, getting their limit of scallops & some impressive crayfish. Remember even if you can get out on a boat you can go in off the shore with plenty see in the marine reserves try Goat Island & Hahei for example. Ross recently discovered how good the new Bio Split Fins are, for an old bugger that doesn't like change he was amazed how effortless and quick it was. “My dive buddy couldn't keep up, & getting back to the boat was a relaxing swim rather than the normal marathon effort”! If you are planning a lot of shore diving then you might be better off with a weight integrated BCD (it’s easier, better weight distribution!) but not a necessity. If you are feeling a bit chilly you don't have to upgrade to a 7mm suit you can get a Hooded Vest instead, pricing starts at $ 69.99 or if you are keen on a titanium lined wetsuit then we have a limited stock of Pro Dive Liberator 5mm Wetsuits for Club Card Members they start at $ 299.00!! or a Pro Dive Liberator 7mm starting from $ 349.00!! Fish City are going to be running Dive Trips, the first 2 are booked for April 22nd & May 13th, out of Tairua to the Alderman Islands. Book through the shop. After the screaming success of the FC430 our clients approached us to do a Centre Console option, after trying various ideas in the FC430 which worked fine we decided Fish City could do one better, that’s when FC500 was born.

We gave the tiller option vigorous testing from the east to west coast, taking it out to Gannet several times and beach launching from Pukehina. Once the FC500 hull had met with our approval we started drawing up ideas for the perfect Centre Console to match this proven hull.

While toying with numerous ideas from plastic fantastic’s to chilly bin completed centre consoles, we rested on the solid alloy construction which was obviously better suited to the Boatie who likes to do it all.

We decided it needed to be of a decent size to accommodate the fishermen who also dives, so ease of access had to be an option as well.

Having a high and dry storage area was a must to keep the battery and wires away from the threat of salt water. With all that in mind Fish City designed the Centre Console as you can see in the photos to the best specs we possibly could.

Starting with the angled dash to mount the steering wheel & make it ergonomically correct while driving on the water. Turning the front into a hinged seat with upholstery for an extra passenger and a huge access hatch to store all your dive gear & larger equipment.

The new FC500 Centre Console comes with all the features we created and included on the FC430, but with an added 700mm of room and of course the self draining Centre Console.

Since then the FC500 Centre Console has become the most popular demo boat amongst the Fish City staff and has al-ready made several trips to Raglan and once to the Firth of Thames. Call the Boys & arrange a demo soon!

Fresh Water Report

It’s been a short summer this year but that hasn’t slowed the fishing down, the Mangatutu has been producing great fishing all summer with some nice evening rises. The spring creeks with their cooler flows have been great and the Waihou is starting to give up some decent size fish again, the trick has been using smaller flies with quite a bit of weight tied in. Western Waikato rivers have been fishing very well with the amount of rain we’ve had, the flows have been up and steady, Dry-droppers are the go on these streams and Wet-flies on the way back downstream. Fish City is now stocking a wide range of Simms gear so come in and check it out, we also have some new fly’s arriving for the winter. March through to the end of May are some great months for catching trophy fish as they are starting to put on condition and fatten up for the spawn, if you want a chance to catch some fish give local guide Paul McDonald a call see www.waikatoflyfishers.co.nz - Tight-lines, The Fish City Crew
