Fish eel pain and stress, as conrmed by the government’s own
armed animal advisory body (FAWC). It’s impossible to know
how many are killed at sea because such enormous numbers are
caught. Millions more are slaughtered on sh arms.
Fish arming now accounts or 50 per cent o global sh consumption. As many as 50,000
sh are crammed into underwater cages where they are orced to swim in endless circles. The water is lthy rom their waste. Injuries occur due to collisions and aggression, and
mortality rates are high. Sea lice ourish in these conditions, eating the sh alive. Their short,
miserable existence ends when the conscious sh are killed by a variety o brutal methods.
These include being clubbed, gassed and asphyxiated. Others have their gills cut and bleed
to death. Some are gutted alive.
In an attempt to limit disease in the underwater cages, armed sh are given vaccines,
antibiotics and chemicals with known human health risks. Thirty per cent o the at in shcan be saturated, contributing to obesity, heart disease and some cancers. The ats act like a
sponge, soaking up toxins – including mercury and cancer-causing dioxins – rom polluted
oceans. That stench at the sh counter is the smell o the ats turning rancid.

You do not need to eat sh to be healthy...
Vegetarians can meet their requirements or omega-3 atty acids
by consuming oods that contain alpha-linolenic acid. Rich
sources include soybeans (including soya milk & tou), walnuts,
rapeseed oil, faxseed & dark green vegetables such as spinach.
Fish are dragged to their deaths in nets the size o
ootball pitches by huge industrial trawlers. As they are
hauled up rom the deep, they undergo excruciating
decompression, which can rupture their swimbladders,
pop out their eyes and push their guts out through
their mouths. On huge industrial ships, killing, gutting
and processing are all automated.
Overshing is causing populations such as cod
to collapse. Fish are being caught beore
they have time to breed, giving numbers
no time to recover. The seas are being
stripped bare and the oceans are dying.
Farming sh increases the problem
because three to ve tons o ocean-
caught sh are needed to produce
eed or one ton o armed sh.

Wildlie at risk
Hundreds o thousands o marine animals
die every year as a result o being accidentally
caught in shing nets. They include whales,
dolphins, porpoises, sharks and endangeredturtles. Long-line tuna shing
kills approximately 100,000
albatrosses every year.
The birds dive or the bait
planted on the end o the lines,
swallow it, hook and all, and are pulled underwater
and drowned. Animals also sufer horric injuries when
they become entangled in discarded nets.

Deep-water trawling nets plough through ragile
coral rees, devastating ocean oors. Fish arms
also damage their surrounding environment. Thepollution rom sh arming in Scotland is comparable
to sewage produced by 9.4 million people. In some
places, the water surrounding the arm becomes so
heavily contaminated that no lie can survive.
