FIRST-YEAR HOUSING GUIDE RESIDENTIAL LIFE STAFF Central Office Staff: The staff who work out of the Office of Residential Life are the Director, Assistant Director and Office Manager. Residence Hall Directors (RHDs): This is a professional staff member who manages the residence hall and supervises the RSA staff in their building. Resident Success Assistants (RSAs): RSAs are students (sophomore-senior) who live in the residence hall and are here to help you adjust to college living! They help answer any questions and assist with living with roommates. The RSAs also provide various programs on a regular basis and strive to create a community on the floor and in the building. There is an RSA on duty every: Sunday – Wednesday from 8PM – 1AM Thursday – Saturday from 8PM – 2PM And remain on call until 8am the next morning While on duty, the RSAs make sure that the halls remain conducive to sleep and study by reporting maintenance needs, talking with residents, and enforcing University policies if it becomes necessary. WHAT TO ASK YOUR POTENTIAL ROOMMATE(S) When finding others to live with, you don’t have to be best friends, you just have to be able to live together. Here are some possible questions to ask in finding a good fit for your roommate(s): How social are you? How involved are you looking to be on campus? Would it be ok to have guests visit in the room? What level is your organization/need to have things cleaned? What are your sleep/study habits? What are some pet peeves/dealbreakers? Don’t assume anything! Ask all of your questions before committing to living with someone. LIVING WITH ROOMMATE(S) Sharing your space will be a new adjustment. Here are some quick points to keep in mind when preparing to live with others: Communication is key! Respect each other’s space Be flexible and willing to compromise Do your part with cleaning Practice the golden rule HOW TO PREPARE FOR MOVE-IN WITH YOUR ROOMMATE(S) Once you’ve found others to live with, keep in touch over the summer to prepare for your arrival to campus! Talk over the summer via email, social media or meet up in person Get to know your future roommate What are some things you can each bring to the room? What are some things you can share? What are some layout options you would consider? Triples work best with at least two lofted beds. Who will it be?
