General Tips for Success!

– Study handouts and powerpoints– Find a group to study with (**only if you study well in groups!)– Stay organized (this includes your simlab station)– Know the practical criteria by heart and why they exist– Be able to evaluate your own work– Check Sharepoint & your class FB group for useful documents– Focus on your weak subjects first– Prioritize your study time (compare grade vs units)

• Most classes are POINT BASED – Share files with each other (Never graded on a curve)

• One exception (endo) in 3rd quarter

ICS Lecture (5 units, q3)

• Monday afternoons• Lectures on various fields/topics

related to dentistry• Teaches you what BEING A

DENTIST is about!• Exams: 1-2 midterms (4o pts)

every quarter• Material not recycled• Questions semi-recycled

• Read the entire syllabus and get familiar with what is due each week/what block you have…can get confusing

• Don’t get on Dr. Fendler’s bad side (go to class!)

• Save all powerpoint presentations, this is what you will study for exams

• ALL lectures/topics are relevant• See above!

ICS Lab (7 units, q4)

• Monday Mornings (Workshops in Clinic Groups)

• Introduction to the clinic • Setting up operatory• Sterilization procedures• Patient communication• ODTP• Assisting (Clinic Observation

Forms)

• Short Quizzes, longer assignments

• Don’t show up unprepared > Read the Content Guide!!!

• Do well on quizzes, every point counts!

• Do the HW! • No HW = minus points

• Follow instructions, don’t leave too early

Precon (IPT) Concepts (4 units, q1)

• Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday mornings/afternoons

• Lecture on projects, dental procedures and materials

• Exams: some 10 point quizzes, midterm and final (weighted)

• Faculty is often flexible about exam schedule

• Everything is important, small details/lectures matter

• Be careful about arguing for points (be respectful!), but make sure questions are fair

• Every point matters > locks at the end of the quarter

• Don’t overanalyze the question (or answers > alphabetical)

Precon: Technique (9 units, q2)

• Tuesday morning (Dental anatomy)Wednesday all day (Restorative)Thursday all day (Operative)

• 2 row instructors– Grading ~subjective

• Projects/Assignments• Practicals!!!

Stay on top of assignments, don’t get too far behind Be Organized! Keep good preps in a safe spot Have an old toothbrush, extra floss, qtips/microbrushes, rubbing

alcohol Quality not quantity A hard row instructor may suck for now but it is a blessing Don’t waste time in lab…if you aren’t being productive, go home and

try again later on Make sure to self-evaluate and tell your row instructor what you like

and don’t like about your waxup/prep/filling I think …., what do you think?

Keep your station organized and clean…a messy tabletop will actually affect your grade (Professionalism)

Pay attention in lecture so you aren’t the annoying kid who never knows what is going on in lab

Dental Anatomy Try over-bulking slightly then carve down

Wax on, wax off Try to follow colors, but not a graded component Don’t forget your interproximal/occlusal contacts Look at wax-up from every angle possible Many different polishing strategies

Soapy water + panty hose + lens cleaning clothDon’t attempt the flame technique unless you have mad skills

Compare wax-up to typodont tooth or the CONTRALATERAL tooth

In clinic, IF you have a reference it will be the contralateral tooth

Operative Practicals:

Understand and criteria and have a set game plan Print out the grade sheet prior to the practical, and evaluate you work Know how the row instructors will measure each criteria (ex width, depth…)

Stay calm, don’t let your neighbors stress/freak you out before the practical Prep the correct tooth

Know when to keep going and when to stop Don’t over-refine

Angulation is important!!! Try and allow time to evaluate your prep throughout & at the end of the practical BE ON TIME, don’t turn in your typodont late

Get help early, figure out your weaknesses.

Restorative (IPT)

• Be nice to your classmates• Be respectful to row instructors / course directors– ESPECIALLY when asking for points, regrades, etc

• Understand how an OSCE works– Precon exam, timed stations, clinical/technical based

• Use proper terminology (buccal/lingual/mesial/distal…)• Know teeth #• BE ORGANIZED!• BE CONFIDEN T!
