ESA UNCLASSIFIED - For Official Use
First Workshop on ScyLight SeCure and Laser communication Technology 8 February 2017 Dr. Harald Hauschildt ScyLight Programme Manager
ESA UNCLASSIFIED - For Official Use ESA | 01/01/2016 | Slide 2
Objectives of the 1st ARTES ScyLight Workshop • Introduction of the programme name
• ScyLight is the abbreviation of “SeCure and Laser communication Technology”
• In cryptography, a scytale (/ˈskɪtəliː/, also transliterated skytale) is a tool used to perform a transposition cipher, consisting of a cylinder with a strip of lather wound around it on which is written a message.
In analogy ScyLight shall be transliterated to “SKYLIGHT”!!

Objectives of the 1st ARTES ScyLight Workshop • Networking
• More than 100 participants……plenty of chances to team up
• Shape the ESA Roadmap on Optical Communication for SatCom
• ESA view on technology evolution and market perspective • Operators view on trends and requirements
• YOUR view on challenges and gaps to be tackled by ESA and its Member States
• ESA will…
• … derive conclusions • … prepare the SatCom roadmap
• … invite for round table discussions with dedicated user/experts
• be in LISTENING mode today => PITCH TALKS !! • and as next steps

ScyLight
SeCure and Laser communication Technology New ARTES Framework called ScyLight (pronounce “skylight”) was launched at ESA Council
at Ministerial level (Dec. 2016) Rationale Optical communications are considered to be one of the next major revolutions in satellite
communication, bringing unprecedentedly high levels of transmission rates, data security and resilience .
Technical developments and early implementations cannot demonstrate its full capabilities, as the optical solution is mainly used in non-optimized (satcom) systems.
Due to the highly innovative nature and the associated high technical and commercial risks, some of the activities to be conducted may require support at an increased intensity.
⇒ ESA-led activities to address system level approach involving all satcom stakeholders => ROADMAP !!
⇒ Industry-led activities for innovative technical developments and in-orbit demonstrations targeting future market opportunities.

ScyLight - Objectives The overarching objectives of ScyLight are:
Address the development and use of innovative optical technologies for satellite communication as well as new market opportunities.
Demonstrate the maturity of optical communication technology to the end user community.
Support industry to develop capabilities and competitiveness in the field of optical technologies, enabling seize related emerging market opportunities for products based on the newly developed technologies.
ScyLight will address the following thematic areas:
Optical Communication Terminal Technology Intra-Satellite Photonics / Optical Payloads Quantum Cryptography Technologies

ScyLight – What’s in for you?
New innovative ideas, but… technology risk is considered high! no market identified yet! need to convince potential user community! In-Orbit demonstration required, well before you start thinking of a product! Aim to come up with a product, once you…
mastered the critical technology and Understood the requirements by the users/market!

ScyLight – Framework (1/5) ScyLight will will be implemented in 4 thematic Lines: (requiring “Letter of Support” by National Delegation)
Line 1 (Common System and Technologies Activities) covers ESA-initiated
market and system studies including optical transmission/propagation studies, ESA coordination of user and expert groups (i.e. satellite primes, operators, service
providers, industry and international partners) to define the roadmap and derive ESA ITTs.
development activities on critical and commonly required components and their validation, evaluation and in-orbit verification
coordination efforts with standardization bodies.
• ESA Workplan, Open Competition • 100% funded • parallel contracts
